Hinterlands are my most favorite, if it just had a conquerable keep that would make it top notch.
Least favorite is Emerald Graves, that place is sooooooooooo boring for being so pretty. And it has stupid walls everywhere.

My favourites have to be: Emerald graves and the Hissing Winds.....Both are beautiful places in their own right.
Most hated: Exalted Plains. I HATE that place with a passion. Its a complete dump with walking corpses and Demons strolling a round all over....I've lost count of how many times I've seen Rage Demons taking other Demons on long walks in that place. If given the choice, I'd burn the place to ash and then let the army deserters have it.
Right now, Hissing Wastes. I'm not crazy about trying to find things in the dark, but there are very few cliffs to fall off. I need velcro.
I wish Emprise du Lion was bigger. I love the snow and the mountains and there is a fantastic view in the fortress there of a wolf carved on to the face of a mountain. So disappointed with how small that map is. I like Emerald Graves and the Hissing Wastes a lot too. Fallow Mire is probably my least favorite map. Just a swamp with very little to do and some undead.
I really love most of the area, but here are my list:
LOVE IT: Hissing Waste, Emerald Grave
Like it a lot: Hintherland, Storm Coast, Fallow Mire (just plain zombie film)
OK: Western Approach, Emprise du Lion (all the colour gave me headaches...)
Hate it: Exalted plain (plain depressing), Forbidden Oasis (need to say why? I hate shards)
Hissing Waste is really a beautiful place. It's the only place you can be at night... And that moon, the desert, the vast emptiness...
Hate Hinterlands.. grinded way too much on there, got burned out
I HATE Exalted Plains too. Too many ramparts to run around. I hate trying to climb over things to be disappointed that I can't. So frustrating!
At the moment my favourite area would be the Hissing Wastes, because exploring a nightly desert, moon and stars shining above and nothing but vastness around you does somehow feel adventurous and romantic.
My least favourite is the Storm Coast. Don't know if it's the rain, but the place seems dull, I get lost all the time and everything looks the same. Inland anyways. The coast is another matter, the way the waves break (or rather don't break) bugs me.
Don't like the Fallow Mire either, but at least that one is over quickly.
Seems like many folks agree that Hissing Waste is wonderful & many doesn't like Exalted Plains ![]()
Interesting.
I would have to say Storm Coast for favorite environment. The waves are amazing, and the overall feel of the map is great.
Least favorite... hmm, I would say Hissing Wastes, due to the long walking distances.
But in terms of environment detail/quality and overall ambiance I really like all maps and their diversity. Going from mountainy area to rainy, desert, swamp and things in between made for a great gaming experience for me
Still enjoying playing at 300+ hours, and on 4th playthrough.
Top three were probably: Emprise du Lion, Hissing Wastes (cause it was so freaking huge), and Exalted Plains.
Least favorite: Fallow Mire, Fallow Mire, Hinterlands, Fallow Mire.

Favorite: I guess Crestwood or Empress du Leon? They were the best combination of big without being overwhelming and still having a coherent larger narrative.
Least favorite: Forbidden Oasis. Pointless area that's a culmination of the most frustrating aspect of the game: shard collection. It's also needlessly labyrinthine. I spent as much time there as I did in areas twice as big because I kept running in circle trying to figure out how to get from point A to point B.
What I liked is that the artists appear to have accomplished their goals in their maps. I think you're supposed to dislike the confusion, clutter, crud and crap of the Exalted Plains. The scarred chaos of a battlefield, the futility of it all. And Hissing Waste does give you the Laura Croft Tomb Raider feel. They did a great job with the environments! Nobody likes the mire, but it just feels icky. Exalted Plains feels...hopeless and sad.
Difficult, I love most of them, for one reason or the other...
Hinterlands, because of the many beautiful ruins, Redcliffe is there, so much to see...
Storm Coast, because I can almost feel the wind breezing coldly against my skin, and these waves clashing against the coasline always make me stare at them
Hissing Wastes, because of the calm atmosphere, the dwarven ruins scattered across the lands and this huge rock formation
Emprise, again makes you really feel freezing, and I love it that you can look from afar at teh colloseum, and wonder if you can get there, and you CAN!
Crestwood has a wonderfully dark and broody atmosphere, the Fallow March, though annoying to wander through, has a constant feel of threat about it. Even the Oasis is somewhat beautiful.
An honorable mention definatly gets to the Wester Approach. the Temple of Frozen Time (I call it that). That one is brilliant, and could have been perfect if they handled the conclusion a bit better .. but all these chars frozen in time, and still in action, you can se them dying while feighting etc...I love that place
Too many beautiful places, but if I can only choose one......Kirkwall ![]()
Emprise is by far the worst, too many winding paths and I hate the snow >_> Forbidden Oasis a close second..could never be bothered doing those two.
Love Crestwood and the Western Approach. They are the only two maps I've done completely.
I think the Fallow Mire is suppose to leave you feeling icky... it's a destitute fishing village wiped out by a plague surrounded by swamp, the undead and barbaric savages... it's not a field trip xD
Emprise du Lion is definitely my favourite. I love running around and staring at the gorgeous frozen river. Also, dragons!
Least favourite if probably Exalted plains. I get lost there more than anywhere else, plus the ramparts are a pain to fight through.
I differentiate between atmosphere and gameplay.
Atmosphere prettiest is Storm Coast. Really beautiful. But not much to do at the start and very annoying to nagivate. Gameplay is pretty good in Emerald Graves and Western approach. Western approach just has the problem that the main door to Toth is locked and it's really counter-intuitive how to open it. However, Fort Griffon is cool.
Emerald Graves is pleasent all around.
Worst gameplay and atmosphere is Fallow Mire. Ugly, extremely annoying, way too hard for the point where it opens up (level 6-7, confronting you with respawning level 11 undead), and not many quests, all of which are extremely difficult pre-Skyhold.
Exalted planes gameplay mechanics is also pretty annoying.
Every time I see "Exalted Plains," I read it as "Exhausted Pains"... and that about sums up my opinion of the place. I grew weary of its death, destruction, war-scorched landsacape, and endless trenches. Which was kinda the point, I think.
My *favorite* maps were the Emprise du Lion, the Hissing Wastes, and the Storm Coast. Yes, navigating the EDL is a pain in the butt, but I love the snowy mountains and the creepy red lyrium everywhere. And I didn't mind how massive the Hissing Wastes were. I didn't have to spend eternity bunny-hopping, and that was awesome, plus the whole night desert thing was atmospheric. The Storm Coast is a lot like EDL with its forests, but navigation is a *lot* easier. Sadly, there's no snow.
To be honest I loved every single area in this game. Each had a unique look and feel. The environments in this game are the best I have seen, excellent job Bioware! ![]()
Reveal please....
The ones on the ground are simple enough. For the other ones. I would go to the southern camp. Then make your way up to a high place. Mark the shard you want to get to and then look around you for the blue light. Then look around for a path to get there. The hardest ones to get usually involves running around the perimeter of the map starting from the southern camp.
Val Royeaux and the Storm Coast were beautiful, but limited.
I didn't care for the Fallow Mire at all, with regards to atmosphere or quests.
