Whenever I speak to Varric the game either crashes when I select default Champion, or nothing happens when I select custom Champion. What is the fix for this game breaking bug?

In the From the Ashes quest where you are supposed to meet Hawke. The game crashes when I select to use the default appearance, and it just hangs when I select the custom appearance.
