After playing DAO and DA2, reading all the codex's from DA:I and playing through the game. I was rather disturbed at the conversation between the Inquisitor (elf) and Abelas. The venom in his speech when he spoke got me thinking: WHY?

I'm not sure if it's a spoiler or not but (if the writers want an extra hand on crafting side quest stories I'm your gal) I began to re-read and go further back and I figured something out.

The Dalish are actually half-breeds that have become a separate race.

Now before someone tries to set  me aflame and throw me under a siege weapon hear me out.

First off the Dalish believe that it was the interaction of being around humans that caused their "quickening"; but lets be realistic- you can catch a cold, but how can you "catch Shem"? The only true interaction would be sex and the children that derive from it. Now in our world that would make said progeny sterile, but hey, this is Thedas and  magic abounds; they've genetically altered dogs, why not another sentient being? What's the harm? (Dumb Gods...)

Now, if the humans caught on, which it seems the ancient humans (pre-Tevinter?) did; you can wipe out a whole race by merely causing there to be more of the blended mix of the races.

However, with the Abelas conversation it brings another light the Elven side of the issue. He doesn't acknowledge Solas or Lavellan as being elves, as a matter even just speaking the old language, he acts insulted as if they were talking in baby-talk. Could it be that despite looking alike on the outside; an elf that still retained a "pure essence" and is able to go in and out of Uthenera while protecting an ancient temple considered them worse than strangers and perhaps as freaks of nature.

Only a DLC will tell if Abelas "quickens" or is able to stay long lived.

I know it goes against the bioware canon, but it has changed little by little with every new game, DLC and book....

Did anyone else feel the same?

Good theory otherwise, but in Thedas there's no such thing as a half-elf. Breeding with a human produces human children, with dwarves dwarven children etc. with no elven characteristics. I like to think of Abela's attitude when meeting elven inquisitor the same as if a medieval 10th century italian walked up to a senator of ancient rome and claimed kinship. Solas actually puts the situation quite well in to words if you choose his special option when meeting Abelas.

As for quickening.... Magic. The catch-all of the fantasy genre that makes anything possible.

Feynriel is considered human and looks entirely human, as Roamingmachine said "Breeding with a human produces human children, with dwarves dwarven children etc. with no elven characteristics.".

Alistair has elven blood as well.

Elves can only pop out of two elves if I remember correctly :)

Interesting theory but I think Abelas is just being a snob. He has one of his gods right there and dismisses him because of his preconceived ideas of of what an elf should be (Solas suffers a bit from this too).

Rather than mortality coming from humans I think it came from the Veil creating a barrier between spirits and the world but the elves didn't notice until they were Tevinter slaves so humans got the blame for it.
