I think a lot of you complaining about not being able to make nice-looking elves is because of personal taste. I've played two elves so far and both of them turned out awesome.
I like elves and I think they generally look good. I keep making the cheekbones too wide and too broad, with the nose way too narrow. I just need some more practice is all. ![]()

For those of you who struggle making a good looking avatar, do a quick Google on the "golden ratio". That should help if you follow those basic rules.

Edit: I appear to be link challenged....

The CC needs better hairstyles, eyebrows and mouths for females. And the jaws are just a little too male for female elves, they're giving me a headache. Over 2 dozen restarts and counting. Doesn't help that the glaring white daylight outside makes any makeup look like clown face.

My only problem was adjusting the make-up but one day, I shall make a playthrough in which the Clown of Ostwick shall finally see the light and all shall tremble in horror at the sight.

Tip for the makeup: Pick your skin tone, then select the next darkest one. It helps to prevent clown face (I've run into that as well.) If it's still annoying, then I'd suggest turning down the makeup options as low as possible. I would recommend the black eyeliner, since it can make the eyes really pop in cutscenes. For that (and for any black/grey color) make sure you get the slider onto the lower left, not the lower right.
As the jawlines go, Mirth's link is really useful. Personally, since I also prefer a less prominent jawline, the first thing I do is pick a preset that I like. From there, I'll go into the general face shape options, some of which have more narrow and less prominent jaws. Next, I usually do small tweaks, such as narrowing the jawline and giving the jaw less thickness as well. Start small, and make the changes as subtle as possible until you're satisfied. Since a jaw can help really define a face, do that first. I found it easy to start getting things like the cheek and lip settings to my liking after that.
My big rule of thumb is to leave the nose alone, unless I'm changing the general shape or size. Messing with tip or the other nitpicky options can shoot everything straight to hell, at least for me. I've noticed that a bad nose can ruin a profile, and make the whole result just off.

The nose options annoy me a lot. They're either broken from the side, or pinched from the front. Getting a good straight, non-pinched, non-bulbous nose is really hard.

I wish I could blame this game's CC for my problems with the nose settings, but nope. My poor first Shepard was proof that I should never mess with the nose settings aside from shape, size and nostril size. She looked like she'd had a rhinoplasty go horribly horribly wrong. ![]()

The best part was when they changed what the face codes meant between ME2 and ME3 despite saying you would be able to import "your" Shepard.

I always remove the makeup entirely. I dunno if Thedas has an Avon alchemist, but fighting in the rain and barrages of fireballs is bound to be murder on one's facial.

Thank goodness for Faces of Gaming. ![]()
Although, with some mods, Shepard can look amazing. I'll send you some pics sometime, if you're ever curious.

I'm glad I got into the series late, but that was pretty laughable. It was my saves, my choices, but looks? Yeah, not really "my" Shepard. More like "My Uncanny Valley" Shepard.

I still mad at the WTF my Shep became.
He was hot in ME2 damnit.

Yah.
Mods true but my old Sheps looked awesome without mods ![]()
And yeah it was I remember my "...are you kidding me?" when I imported my Shep to ME3. I had spent hours into his face...all that effort. Squandered.

Nah I justify it as magic.
My characters need to have some vanity. XD

Seriously? I think it's about a thousand times better than the character creators in either of the previous games. There are far more options - DAO and DA2 didn't have an eyelash style selector, or separate colour wheels for inner and outer irises.
The hair styles are pretty terrible, but they weren't great in the previous games either.
ewwwww ewwww a eylash detector for my male character fully equipped with full make up options... maybe they shoulda spent less time on these feature's and more on other's like the ability to kick down any door and kill anyone you want the developer must have less imagination and less testorone then jrpg's dev, and to admit that one of the reason why I like western rpg's

Then don't use the options? I mean, I can have stubble as a female dwarf as well as an Adam's Apple slider for all female characters. I have no need for either, so I just ignore it, and move on with life.
The game mechanics team isn't the same department. The CC is the result of the design team. If you don't like it, take it up with them. If you feel the game mechanic team failed, there is a lot of threads addressing that. I've been in those myself, but let's keep this more on topic.

Then don't put make up on your dudes? Just because the option is there doesn't mean you have to use it.

This in a nutshell. I understand it is difficult to make hairstyles that do not interfere with armor (if that is even the reason?) But only 2 down hairstyles for females 2 ponytails and the rest more or less bald. I was very disappointed. Waiting for a mod for that.... However, other than that creation was decent.

Well, as far as facial customisation goes, it's definitely their most flexible creator yet. The lack of options in the hair department were a bit baffling though. I would argue the two most important facets of the character creator are eye and hair customisation. Inquisition lets you play around with eye shapes more than before, but the barnets are hugely restricting. I almost felt like making my elf bald, but then I realised she'd look like Solas' twin.

nothing but a bunch of minging deformed munters?
LOL I think that is one of the best things I've seen the CC get called.
Might as well just edit your post and put *disgusted noise* while your at it.
