Okay, my Google-Fu has failed me and this question is driving me nuts.

 

In the camps you establish throughout the various regions, there is a pole with banners/pennants. As I've progressed through the game, I have seen maybe one or two more added to it. Obviously, I've done something to add pennants, but I can't for the life of me figure out what they are or what they represent. Doesn't really seem to represent regions unlocked or alliances made, from what I can gather.

 

Anybody know? I feel like I'm missing something blatantly obvious.

I think the top one is the mages and the bottom is for your origin?  (I had the green one too and it looked sort of elfy?).  I think the black one could be for the Chargers given the horns (or the Blades of Hessarian)?  I also had one for the Grey Wardens later on in-game and it was clearly the Grey Warden sigil.

Could be representation of the battalion's unit. That one might have had grey wardens, elves, etc.

I think its alliances.  I got the warden one after asking them to join me at Adamant.  I don't have the black one with pirate symbols (I let the chargers die).  Sided with the mages, have the top mage one (though my character is a mage, so maybe origin?).

 

Have no idea on the bottom green one...how did you resolve winter palace?  I have it as well, and I killed Gaspard & reunited Celene and the elf woman.

They are alliances you have made. The top one is the mages, the middle one I assume could be the Blades of Hessarian now that I think about it, bottom green could be an elf thing. I have pics incoming of mine to compare...give it a moment

Mages, Orlais, didn't exile Grey Wardens, and not entirely sure about that white one. I'm missing the other one you have there. I didn't get the Blades of Hessarian to work with me, so that may why. Green banner could be an elf thing.


Templars, not done Wicked Hearts and Wicked Minds yet so the Orlais banner is missing, didn't exile the Grey Wardens, I got the Blades to work me on this one but I'm missing the white one my other Inquisitor has.

I supported Celene but don't remember if I exiled Gaspard or had him executed, it was a while ago, and I don't know if that would have an effect on the banner or not.

The white one you have may be Fairbanks' men in the Emerald Graves? I recruited them recently and noticed that white banner on a more recent screenshot of mine (that I didn't upload).

 

Nice. I was thinking alliances, but couldn't figure out who they represented. I haven't done "Wicked Hearts" yet, so missing that one. My top one is, indeed, mages. The bottom one is green and elfy, so I assume Dalish as that was my origin and this screenshot was pretty early in the game (before making nice with the Dalish clan in the Exalted Plains). And that black one is the Blades of Hessarian, yeah, because I recruited them, too.

 

And I exiled the Wardens, so that explains me not having that one. Hmmm.

Happy to help.  I forgot about Fairbanks! My second Inquisitor hasn't finished helping him out so we'll see if the white banner is added when I get him sorted.

The white one has just appeared on mine after I finished the Emerald Graves, so I guess it is Fairbanks - can't think what else has been done recently that it could be.

Yes, I can confirm the white to be Fairbanks. My second Inquisitor had it added once I was done with his quests. Black is the Blades. My first Inquisitor just slaughtered them all so it's missing, but my second Inquisitor didn't. I was thinking it could be chargers as well because one inquisitor let them die and the other let them live.

EDIT: Black banner is Blades of Hessarian. Went back to an early save with my first Inquisitor and gained their loyalty. The only other banner on there was for the mages and it is now accompanied by a black one.

Here's mine, not sure why the second one is missing though… perhaps it has something to do with the fact I had Celene and Briala ruling together? Maybe Gaspard or Celene have to be ruling alone to get the banner? I was definitely allied with Orlais, though, had chevaliers at Skyhold and everything… I allied with the mages, Fairbanks and the Wardens and saved the Chargers, so that would explain the rest.

 

If it is alliances, maybe the elven one towards the bottom is allying with Abelas and the sentinel elves? I did that on this playthrough. And I assume the very last one is once there's a new Divine, since I only got that one post-game.

Elven one I received after gaining favor from the Dalish in the Exalted Plains for sure with my second Inquisitor. I'll have to look through my saves to find out when it appeared for my first Inquisitor. I can do some fiddling with Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts to see what variables may have an effect on the Orlesian banner.

And yes, last one is received post-game.

EDIT: Yup, green banner is given after gaining favor with the Dalish.

madzilla, you were correct in thinking Celene or Gaspard have to rule alone to get the banner. Reconciling Celene and Briala so they rule together will not give the banner. Also blackmailing Celene, Gaspard, and Briala into a truce will not yield the banner. You get a different banner if you let Celene die and support Gaspard.

If you let Celene die, Gaspard rules but Briala pulls the strings, you won't get anything.

Lame you don't get a banner for supporting Briala or reuniting here with Celene since that one gives the best epilogue...

We've got bits and pieces of info so far (mostly correct), but I thought I'd take the liberty of putting together this little post to simplify the answer - there are 7 possible flags that can be added to your Inquisition banner, all rewarded through your choices. From top to bottom, they are:

 

1. Mages or Templars (Depending on which you pursue.)

2. Orlais (Depending on whether you specifically side with Gaspard or Celene.)

3. The Wardens (If you choose to have them help the Inquisition.)

4. Fairbanks (If you help him out in the Emerald Graves.)

5. The Blades of Hessarian (If you wear Mercy's Crest and challenge/kill their leader on the Storm Coast.)

6. The Dalish (If you earn their favor by doing the quests assigned in the Exalted Plains.)

7. The Divine/Chantry (Rewarded post-game.)

 

If you reject an alliance or don't do what is required to gain it, the spot where the flag would be remains empty.

Does anyone know if for the Fairbanks banner thing you have to make him a noble or give the evidence to him? It really sucks that you can't get a banner for making Celene, Gaspard, and Briala work together.

I believe it shows up as soon as they move to Argon's.

It's annoying that you don't get Celene's banner when you reunite her with Briala (Celene is still empress when they reconcile).

Neither, you just have to defeat the Freeman and when Fairbanks move to the Freeman base you will get the banner.
