She was sent to a clan that didn't have enough mages.

Sending your young mages out to die, when your existence is already precarious, is a sure way to not have enough mages.

If they were united that may be an issue, but they're separate individual clans. They don't need a lot of mages, and they present dangers that make too many an issue.

How have people not realized this far in that the dangers mages present is real and not fabricated by the chantry? Look what happened with Connor when his father almost died. It was forced, but people die all the time.

Okay also mages are different how come so many Dalish mages where not corrupted like most of the keepers hell one even binded a spirit and lived hundreds of years without being possessed. Also many of the firsts like Merril and that crazy elf from Awakenings. Just because there is a chance you will be a danger for the clan its does not mean that you will be one especially since even non mages can be a danger for a clan.

While there are general cultural overtones to the Dalish, ie them not having more then 3 mages. The are nomadic clans and every clan is different. Some like Mineave's just push them out to the wilds. Others like Merill's did trade negotions with other clans, and some like Zathrians just found other ways.  Every clan is kind of its own group that is unique to itself. Making generalizations about them is not that good IMO.

of course city elves are worse off then the dalish IMO, and i like the dalish, but the city elves opression is far worse then the dalish.

Exactly. You can't really say that the Dalish are...

Who are the Dalish? Clan Sabrae? Clan Ralaferin? Clan Lavellan? Which is the definitive Dalish clan? Who's the closest to following the Old Ways?

None of them. The 'Dalish' are just a bunch of tribal elves who adapt and adopt cultural rituals out of circumstantial expedience. No two clans are the same so saying the 'Dalish' are better or worse than the city elves is futile since the Dalish themselves aren't really united. ****, for that matter neither are the city elves.

So when I'm living like a nomad going from place to place barely surviving as it is, I'm supposed to be comforted with the fact that "Not ALL mages turn into big monstrous freaks"?

I'd love to see how many people in real life would react negatively if one of their family members was a mage, knowing that any mage has the potential to go darkside and kill your entire family.

I do not know if that is true they clearly communicate and marry with people from other alienages which is a step more then what the Dalish do. They share their customs and traditions the Dalish do not do that and that is their weakness.

I will say most so good luck proving that I am wrong. There was a alien story at radio before I was born where hundreds of people killed themselves thinking Earth will be invaded by aliens but most who listened did not do that.

Perhaps an alienage in Highever and Denerim might have similar customs and culture.

What about an alienage say from Monstimmard or Antiva City? See where I'm getting at? Sure, their honoring of their elven heritage by having a Hahren or Vehnadahl is probably constant. But elves in Orlais are going to be closer to Orlesians than to elves in Antiva.

Mages as demon magnets is real. And the Dalish aren't even taking an extreme.

Connor's story is a perfect example of what happens when you put forward the belief that mages are ticking time bombs that have to be controlled through fear and murder. Where are all these Dalish parents whose children are being sent into the wilderness? You don't think there would be an elven Isolde out there which would produce the exact same result as Redcliffe?

If those parents are just letting this happen, then the Dread Wolf take them. And I don't mean "nice Solas" but "I'll vaporize you with a wave of my hand" Solas.

Meanwhile Minaeve isn't frothing with demons despite not having templars leer over her at Haven. The Dalish would rather their young people be slaves of the Chantry than use their talents to serve the People? Bullshit. I'm glad at least Lavellan can say her clan did it differently. I wish she could say "did someone drop your Keeper on his head as a child?"

How is that a perfect example when she kept him from the chantry and almost took out a town? Granted it was forced, but if all it takes is a parent to get sick in their setting...

Yes the percentage of mages that go apeshit is small, but I bet if it wasn't your child, a lot of people would not want to take that chance, even if it was just one out of 25. Morality has no room in this equation when it comes to the safety of your people. People already barely surviving as it is.

I think it's odd though that the parents don't go with their child. That is pretty shitty.

And in the infinite universe aliens are not? Anyway that is not the point I gave the closest example of a real life counterpart to the mages problem DAI and how most people dealt with it. The majority of humans do not panic and kill people because there is a remote chance of it so most people in real life if mages and demonic possesion exist(the later does or does not exist) will not get rid of them.

My opinion of course but I think humanity is more compassionate and tolerant then we give it credit for of course I mean the ones from the 1900 until now before they sucked.

Oh lord. If aliens exist, which I believe they do actually, they're not traveling here, that's for sure. Space travel over long distances, by space's terms, is an eternal dream. It's impossibly vast.

This example is way too far off. People's kids aren't causing alien abductions or attacks. There is no real life equivalent, except maybe quarantine situations at best.

The whole setup for Redcliffe is Isolde trying to hide Connor's magic and relying on Jowan (!) for magical training because he'd be taken away from her if the truth came out. Which is exactly what would happen in a Dalish clan if some parents realized their child had magic and the clan already had Keeper, First and Second. And how often must this happen, since elves are more magically inclined. You're talking about a number of families in a clan who are forced to abandon their children for no good reason.

For no good reason, is apparently relative, since I think attracting monsters is a very good reason.

And we saw that mission very differently it seems, because how I saw it was a foolish woman keeping her child from the circle where there's walls and templars and more than one (Very young apprentice) mage to guide him. And it ended in disaster due to the emotional trauma of his father going ill.

THAT is the setup. Look at all the lives lost because of one woman's foolishness. Loghain's to blame mainly, of course, but it shows just how easy things can go south. The man's old. He could fall ill from anything.

Now that Connor's been brought up the Redcliffe situation is pretty sad and makes Isolde into even more of a selfish ******. Kinolch Hold (Fereldan Circle) is described as having one of the most liberal Circles in Thedas. Mage Trevelyan is allowed to visit his family like it's normal. That's due to his status as nobility. If Isolde had let Connor go to Kinolch all those deaths would have been avoided and she wouldn't have "lost her son" to the Circle. Arl Eamon having Cailan's ear could have also made things easier for Connor if succession was a real problem for Redcliffe.

Also, elves being more magically inclined may actually be a point for this. It may suggest more elves become mages. Dangerous.

Never bought into the "Oooh, magic dangerous!" mentality. It's dangerous like fire as Vivienne says. But on a cold night fire also keeps you warm. A lawnmower used irresponsibly is also dangerous.

The whole demon thing is overblown IMO. The Fade is a reflection of one's thoughts. If Wisdom comes at me for a civil conversation and all I see is Pride then it's going to attack.

Fire doesn't have the chance to take out a whole town from the power of one demon.

edit: Well, actually it does, lol, but not like this.

Yeah it hard to find a equivalent maybe the children of a convicted "witches" in Reinnasance time but heck if I know what happened to them if they were sent away in the wilderness or raised by relatives but as I said people before the 1900 in my opinion sucked and nobody in Europe sucked worse then the ones in the time of the Reinnasance  in all the time after the fall of the roman empire.

The Chantry creates most of the problems it then has to step in and solve- which helpfully allows it to consolidate and enforce its own power. There is no such incentive for the Dalish, so I have to conclude this practice is due to corruption from them having been influenced by an Andrastian mentality, which makes them no better than the city elves, just more hypocritical.

I highly doubt you actually believe the Dalish of all people were corrupted by Andrastians. If they take on this practice, it's by their own accord, and you can blame them for it, whether it is corruption, or if it's that they too recognize the dangers a mage is born attracting from birth.

I've seen enough zombie movies to know how people react to situations like this, lol. That's a joke, btw, I know it's not the same.

I can admit that the majority of people in Thedas probably overreact to the issue, chantry certainly and Dalish included. Now others need to admit that when you look at it, you really can't blame them, given the very real dangers a mage posses simply by existing. That isn't something easily dealt with, no matter what camp you stand in. If I told you to open a door out of 10, and one of them had a monster behind it, how safe would you feel?

edit: Actually, the door would just open on it's own... I'd get the hell out of there or torch the place.

On a more not so serious tone mages should just bind the demons that posses others and use them as servants I mean imagine the talk in the fade when they hear they could be bound to do menial tasks as slave sunder the service of mortals everytime they posses a mage .  That certanly would limit the amount of possession if they talk with each other.
