The intent to take away any and all meaning of being a Dalish Elf?

You're not "a Dalish Elf". You're (well, your character is) a person who happens to be of dalish origin. Nobody can take away the meaning of your [character's] existence.

Say it with me now:

Sadly, it's the only way to look at it now.

The candy cane color-pattern is a nice touch.

Exactly. These are children, we're talking about, however, when magic is at it's most dangerous. All aren't strong enough to combat demons while they dream naturally. That's the Dalish logic I see behind this, and it's sound given their lifestyles.

It'd do wonders for their reputation if they could work out a way to give their excess mages to the Circles if trading between clans wasn't an option. But the Dalish be prideful.

People need to build up approval for this thread, so it doesn't get locked. Too much disapproval may get it to the moment of crisis.

Talking about magic, people need to remember that Dalish has no solution for mages. If there are too much mages being born. They would kill them off by sending them into the wild as children with no protection. Elf mages can also become a First Enchanter among and watch over other human mages in the human population.

I'm sorry you're bitter that your preferences don't match what the writers want for their world, but you're either going to have to get over it and accept, or move on.

We are talking on BSN, are we not?

I'm sure threads bitterly bemoaning these revelations will continue to be made years from now, upto the next DA game (at which point new grievances will arise).

Hopefully people will have something other than elves to be bitter about.

That would be interesting to see. In fact, it's already an in-universe story: Aveline, the first female knight in Orlais, was supposed to have been brought up by Dalish.

The Inferior Aveline may have been raised by the Dalish, but I doubt she ever confused herself as being one. Or else the Dalish are a lot creepier than I would have guessed.

Hell, if the Wycome experiment works, we could add another twist: humans wanting to be Dalish. Imagine their faces if suddenly humans applied to be Dalish hunters or started worshipping the elven gods :P

When I first played DAO, I put dalish tatoos on my Human Noble. Even before I knew what they were supposed to be, I RP'd that they were the result of a bit of regretted teenage rebellion and a tatoo fad.

Well, remember that some people identify really, really, really strongly with the elves.

Have elves ever lacked a reason to be bitter, and to dwell on it for extremely unhealthy and unproductively long afterwards?

Well sure. Dragon Age has never been kind to elves.

That being said, I don't think that justifies the vitriol that inevitably crops whenever they're discussed

I'm guessing it's Allan since he added new sections and such on DAI board. I'm thinking that it's under Special Surveillance because it's Christmas Eve and people want to spend time with their family. That begs the question, why the hell are we all here? :P

So the Dalish Elves aren't perfect or completely benign...

So what?

In what way is that at all a surprising development in Dragon Age? The Dalish are like every other faction or race in DA, which means their going to have nasty elements to their society that going to make them look far more morally grey then what the people would suppose for a fantasy franchise. You see that everywhere in Inquisition, the mages are jerks the templars are jerks, the Orlesians are jerks, the Chantry are jerks, the Seekers are jerks, the Qunari are jerks, the humans are jerks, the dwarves are jerks, the City elves are jerks and even the Grey Wardens are jerks. None of these factions are prefect or have the solution to Thedas' many social issues and is that done by design by the writers who don't want their to me a clear good group in their universe. Even Cassandra admits that the Inquisition is probably going to inevitability succumb to this in its pursuit of order somewhere down the line. And you know what, that's completely fine in my opinion because we need more fantasy rpg games that willing to show the grayness of their actions and culture.

tl: dr - Sera was completely right and everyone is full of shite.

Avoiding spending time with the family. They are good for a few drinks though. Anything beyond and it can get rather tense.

Today in our show, worried Wycome parents talk about their children's troubling behaviour.

"When he was younger, my son dreamt of becoming a Templar, or winning the Grand Tourney. You know, typical child dreams. But since the Dalish started living here, he only listens to that horrible elven music and wears shoes without soles. I mean, what kind of pagan fashion is that? Now he says he wants to put on vallas-whatever tatoos and join the Dalish hunters."

"But isn't he human?"

"I know! I told him so, but he doesn't listen. He says that I'm "oppressing him" and that I don't understand. Worst of all, he says he isn't going to go to the Chantry on Sunday anymore, because he's worshipping the elven gods. You know, I'm not racist, and I welcomed the Dalish when they saved our city from those red lyrium bastards, but this is too much. Somebody, please, think of the children!"

off Topic : "Topic Under Special Surveillance

Be advised that this topic is under special surveillance and it can be locked at any time."

Isn't that pretty much any forum on any topic on any website?? Just asking cause... yea... kind of the nature of forums that are moderated...

On Topic: Truthfully, yea writers made a world where everything is pretty much crap.... pretty much a good reflection of the real one. Everyone has skeletons, societies have big ones.

The Dalish killed one of there own and the person they where with, thinking was betreying the kingdom and was going to share secerts. Then they brought in, religion and then everything blew up out of proportion. Yep. Sounds like real life to me.

And in this World you have people like the Warden, Hawke, Inquistor. Well Warden could be an ahole, Hawke truthfully wasn't really a hero more of a civilian who did something but couldn't change the world around him, Inquistor changed the world.... maybe....

Nobody is saying that the Dalish should be perfect or benign or innocent. Its just things like "banishing extra mage elves" that sound really contradictory to previous lore in previous games. And even if its not contradictory, even if its only one particular clan with its particular quirks. People then take negative stuff like that, perhaps over-blow it in proportions, and then use it to paint a broad brush over all Dalish as completely bad and irredeemable and its all their fault.

And we've only met..... how many clans? 5? Less than 5?

Also, frak Sera.

*sigh* For the n'th time... For me, at least, it's not anything to do with whether they're benign or not. I always thought the Dalish origin was kind of twee in DAO, with that plucky music in the camp and that... Cammen and Gheyna, ugh. Always wanted them to be darker and wilder. This, though, just makes no sense for them. If I heard they were going mageocracy it would make more sense, given their history. I like lore developments to make sense. None of the arguments put forward on the board move the logic meter, given what else we know of the Dalish, so it's a development in a stupid evil direction as opposed to something more compelling.

I don't think the Dalish are any better or worse than the City Elves. They are shaped by their circumstances and how they chose to approach them. Most of the time, they are treated negatively, so they respond aggressively. The City Elves tend to be the "Keep your head down and hope a chevalier doesn't kill your family today or a noble rape your bride, wife or daughter tomorrow. If we play nice, maybe, just maybe, we'll be treated decently someday."

I respect the Dalish and am fascinated with their lore, and am curious to see where it goes with the new revelations. I respect the city elves who take a stand and find ways to fight back against their own form of oppression and refuse to kowtow to how things are.

Some Dalish are jerks, others are not. Some City Elves are pathetic, some are not. Both are filled with people shaped by their experiences, and should not be judged by the actions of their ancestors, and whatever action or inaction the modern elves make should be placed in proper context based on their situation, with an eye equal to their prejudices and actions, and those of the humans who torment them continually at large.
