I'm using the Tabular .2da editor but it really does some whacky things. For instance it truncates the icons.2da when I load it up. It crashes sometimes when I begin closing it.

I use Vista and that is the largest issue, but I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for a more stable .2da editor. I don't want to accidentally foul up my campaign when I've come this far.

I personally use notepad++, but I know some prefer Excel.

The advantage of Excel vs notepad++ is that it puts the values in columns (the problem being it also considers spaces as separators, be careful with this - for example, appearance.2da has "Dragon, Bronze" in the list, which will add an extra column when you save it).

Its called tlk2edit.

People often don't realize it does 2das.
Excel is horrible at it for the reasons above.

Okay Im trying out excel, but it's making me a little weary. Its asked too many questions that I'm not sure about such as delimited text, and would I like commas to indicate whether I want extra columns.

Making back up copies of the .2da but I'm not getting a "warm fussy." I may just try to use the notepad.

EDIT: Just saw your post Equintir. I do remember seeing tlk2edit somewhere on my computer. I must have downloaded it as an alternative. I'll look at it.

I also use Vista, and I don't know what you mean about it being an issue.

I use EditPlus, a text editor, for my 2DAs.  As an alternative, Eguintir's suggestion of TLKedit2 is good (on my copy, the 2 is on the end -- don't know if there are variants out there), though it always converts tabs into spaces.  This has no effect on the program using it, but it increases the file size.

Further investigation has revealed that I'm not having issues with the .2DA editors. I'm actually having problems with Hatsplosions icons .2da

I just downloaded the override version again to make sure I didn't somehow corrupt the file at some point while fooling around with it.However, I still couldn't crack it open and tlk2edit flat out said it's broken.

You are right. The reason I deduced that was because I never ran into this issue when I used another Operation System. I wasn't being fair to Vista.

Talk edit was made for these files. It doesn't use tabs or commas... Each field is its own little sub window or text box if you will. It never misaligns or screws up a clean file because it doesn't convert. You'll see when you try it.

These files are plain text files where the values are separated by white space (a single tab or any number of spaces) rather than commas, and a character return to indicate the next entry.  I use single tabs in my 2DAs for efficiency, and dislike that if I open it and save it in TLKEdit2, they're converted to multiple spaces.

I seem to recall the Hatsplosion icon 2DA isn't a fully formed 2DA -- it just contains the relevant lines and you're expected to paste them into your real 2DA.

I checked the Hatsplosion 2DA, and it must have been some other 2DA I was thinking of, because this one is fully formed.  However, I see some differences between it and my own icon 2DA.  First, in mine, the word "ICON" has a tab in front of it, and this one does not.  Second, this one is missing number 277, which makes all later numbers off by 1.  Mine has continuous numbering.  This may not affect anything.  Third, this one is missing icons from the later expansions.  If you want to use Hatsplosion, I recommend you copy and paste only the new icon lines into the most recent icon 2DA, and not use the one it comes with as it is.  I would use a text editor for the purpose.

NWN_2daEditor

has never crashed on me in nearly a decade.
has option to save w/ spaces rather than tabs (unfortunately does not save the option)
looks good, easy to read, simple to make a change to a single entry.

auto-fixes some errors, like not enough entries on a line (if so, it colors those fields differently so you know what it did)
while it does do blocks, it's kinda awkward and you can easily get row#s misarranged if not careful. That is, if I really want to merge stuff i'll use NotePad++

associate it w/ .2da in win Explorer and its a handy app, although it takes a long time to load very large files
