I like the game but there was absolutely no need for the open world...

People complained how Dragon Age 2 was too small. Now we got people complaining that Dragon Age Inquisition is too big. Should the negative comments surprise me.
 
I enjoy the open spaces that Dragon Age Inquisition has to offer. I felt the quests fitted the areas pretty well.


People complained about DA2 being small because they just reused the same maps over and over. It wasn't like in DA:O where each zone had a distinct flavor to it and didn't reuse the same map over and over.

People having different opinions than yours definitely should not be surprising.

Heres the thing about the open world and the open worldy elements like fetch quests that most are complaining about, you don't have to do them, they are completely optional.  I have done a completionist playthrough, and yes it got grindy and bit boring. 

 

2nd playthrough I decide nope, just do what I need to, so main quest with all companion quests and the main area quests (flooding crestwood etc) and capture any keeps and close any rifts I happen to walk past.  All things that Quizzy should be doing and I feel are justified by the story. All of which will get you enough power and level to move through the main story without losing that sense of urgency.

 In DAO and DA2 and most other games you pick up a few quests along the way as you are moving through the main quest, and the side mission involves doing things in the same area. People keep making this comparison to other games but its really not the same. Picking up a few fetch quests as im doing a main story quest is not the same as traipsing about meaningless and huge areas with absolutely no tie in to the main story, doing poorly thought out and lazy "quests" just for the sake of it . I had rather theyd made fewer maps, but focused on making very good content in a couple of them. Like having a real and proper story arch to the area, not just scout harding babbling for 5 secs. Some of them are nice, helping fairbanks and some others but they are scarce tbh. The game is just littered with so much crap its also hard to find these gems.

the only problem is that you are forced to do this grinding to one degree or another, and the things that you want to get to, involve sifting through tons of boring content, including the companion quests, plus you dont get much for it. trudging through several long areas just for a bit of approval is hardly meaningful. And please the game is like 10 hours, if it werent for all the side quest bullshittery. If it wasnt for all this optional crap there would hardly be any content, so people do it to pass time, and actually get som bang for the huge amounts of buck theyve spent.

Also your argument would hold far more weight were it not for the fact that bioware has been lying through its teeth in marketing the game.

You and I have very different experiences of the game then.  

 

Because the second time through I didn't grind anything, didn't feel like I was doing anything unnecessary to the advancement of the story and it still took me about 50 hours to do. That is enough bang for my buck, especially as I'm just starting my 3rd, will do a 4th and in the years to come continue to play DA:I as I have DA:O and DA2, thats about the best value entertainment for $100 I could ask for.

I think it's bad game design if the player has to consciously avoid parts of the game just so they won't get bored. Sure, fetch quests and the like may be optional, but why drown the game in filler?
 
Had BioWare reigned in the size a bit and consolidated their resources towards fewer, higher quality quests, DA:I could have only benefitted. I don't need every quest to tie directly into the main plot, but it wouldn't hurt BioWare to allocate their time more effectively.

I'm not arguing that the DA:I side quests are good, they generally aren't. I'm arguing that given most people complaining have bought the game, it seems silly to throw the baby out with the bath water when there is a way to play the game and get enjoyment by viewing the side quests as optional.

 

DA:I is hardly alone in having some very boring side quests, frankly after one completionist playthrough of DA:O I never touched a single chanters board again and apart from Sten everyone in Lothering can kiss my arse and die. 

 

I don't disagree quality side quests would be lovely, but if wishes were fishes.  The game is how it is, we have to deal with the way it is now not how we would like it to be.

 

All I am saying is that if a player doesn't like the side quest grind then they can completely ignore them and still have enough power and levels to enjoy the meat of the main story and still get value for money.

I truly hope the Open World is here to stay. I've enjoyed exploring the woods and caves, deserts and snowy peaks. I feel that this is the ideal form of a Medieval Fantasy RPG style.
