Playing a Sword and Shield Warrior for first time. Which Specialization is best? I see the issues of tanking and closing rifts at the same time, so maybe not Champion? Which then - Reaver or Templar?

Any of the specializations are fine for S&B. Post-Skyhold the game becomes relatively easy so specialization isn't needed for survival (or rather, needed to get through the combat) it just gives you an extra dimension in battle really.

Champion - More tanking abilities, 2 invulnerabilities and one OP taunt.

Templar - Some damage, some crowd control, eldritch detonator, party buffs

Reaver - More damage

Personally I'd pick Templar or Reaver since I think the gameplay is more fun. With Champion you kinda just are more unkillable than normal and can taunt bosses while running in circles for your teammates to do massive damage to the boss for you.

I'm actually going to test this tonight but I think that Walking Fortress may allow you to close rifts while being wailed on, it lets you do everything else for 8 seconds, I wouldn't be surprised if it let you do that.

I'll just throw in one more vote for Champion here: with To the Death, you don't need to run around in circles after taunting, because TtD gives unlimited guard generation, you taunt, and then stand there and take it to the face while you and your team unload on an increasingly fragile enemy.  It's awesome, especially when you hit a dragon with it, count to 20~30 seconds, and then tac cam to your party and pull out their specials/flasks of damage and burst it down.

Champion is a more defense tank while still claiming the best boss killer of all S&S warriors. Templar is the best aoe damage, gives party buffs and is best against demons. Reaver I think is underwhelming as a S&S warrior although it can become very powerful if you can manage guard right.  As mentioned above To the Death is super powerful and should not be underestimated. Champion shines because of the synergy S&S warrior has with To the Death. You don't really need walking fortress after a point.
