Origins and DA2 seemed to have more interesting characters. They had it all: beautiful, strong, independent women; a lovable dwarf and Qunari, an acidic gollum, bitter elf, etc.
Origins: For me, the obvious pick is Alistair. He's charming in such a dorky-but-cute-as-can-get kind of way, and I love the whole royal bastard thing. Also Morrigan. The necessary counterpart, but still tremendously adorable (she'd probably kill me for saying that, but heck.) Besides, the relationship between these two is so very touching. Especially the part where Morrigan calls Alistair an idiot. He might be, but he's MY idiot.
DA II: Varric. Because.. Well.. He's Varric? What's not to love. That said, I'm a sucker for a good ol' story and Varric's got plenty. Fenris also has some sexymysterious vibes going on at first, but he's just so horribly ANGRY all the time... 'Just follow the trail of dead bodies' - you don't need to tell me Varric.. I also always liked Aveline. She reminds me of Virgil's portrayal of the female warrior Camilla.
Inquisition: First and foremost - Solas. I never came this close to having my heart broken by a fictional character. I'm having trouble expressing exactly how thrilled, devasted, confused and AMAZED I was both during the friendship/romance and, of course, after the big reveal. Mind. Blown. It'll just stick like glue to my brain until we know more (and btw, thanks for the links in the Solas thread. But it'll only keep me busy for so long).
Dorian is very close to my heart as well. From the moment I met him I knew I'd love him. He's got just the right amount of arrogance, sarcasm, ideals and a pretty relatable pain in his chest to make him an unforgettable character and, not least, a true friend.
And Cole! He's the best.. Well.. Also the best, that is. I love his weird dialogues and everybody's reactions to him.
(I feel kinda guilty right now, actually.. I LOVE YOU TOO CASSANDRA... And Sera, and Bull and Wynne and Zev'.. and.. so on..) ![]()
Most liked DAO:
Alistair - He was funny, charming, and cute despite his crybaby tendencies.
Wynne - I really enjoyed how she was a maternal figure to the Warden.
Most disliked DAO:
Oghren - Actually not as bad as some of the other DA characters, but he bored me compared to the other characters.
Most liked DAA:
Nathaniel - He was noble, stalwart, and a true gentleman.
Sigrun - I loved her excitability and effervescence. She was just too darn cute.
Most disliked DAO:
Oghren - He was the comic relief in DAO, but DAA just made him into a joke.
Most liked DAII:
Sebastian - Like Nathaniel, he was just very gentlemanly and he looked very dashing. I loved his genuine faith in the Maker and I loved hearing him talk about it with others in the group, especially Fenris.
Carver - Say what you want about him, but Carver's envy towards Hawke was fun to watch unfold. He was the annoying little brother archetype, but he had his heartwarming moments as well.
*Special Mention: Isabela - I was actually fairly indifferent towards Isabela for the most part, but she had some pretty choice and hilarious lines throughout the game.
Most disliked DAII:
Merrill - Pretty much the only character in the entire series that I hate with a passion. I hated Anders, too, in the first game I played and the game after that, though I soon eased up on him, but Merrill is a whole 'nother story. Her naivety and pride just destroyed a lot of people's lives which wouldn't have happened if she had just LISTENED to the people that knew what they were talking about and done as she was told. She was just an extraordinarily stupid character that refused to listen to common sense.
Fenris - His brooding was annoying and the fact that he refused to broaden his horizons regarding mages beyond the ones in Tevinter just got on my nerves.
Anders - They changed him so much from his jovial Awakening self that he may as well have been a new character. His entire stunt in the last Act really got to me though and I was pissed that he manipulated me to help him with his BS.
Most liked DAI:
Blackwall - I loved his earnestness and his gruff, yet kind personality. His personal story pretty much shot him up to the top of my most favorite DA companions and his VA just hits all the right notes for me.
Cole - After Asunder, I really didn't expect to like him, but in DAI, Cole was just. Too. Adorable! Seriously though, if Cole was real, I'd pretty much just dote on him all day just because of all the cute and roundabout things he says and does.
Most disliked DAI:
Dorian - Arrogant. Pompous. Defensive. Smarmy. Obnoxious. I just didn't like him as much as I wanted to and he got insufferable fairly quickly.
Iron Bull - 'Qunari for dummies' describes him perfectly. To be honest, I didn't think he was that bad, but like with Oghren in DA:O, he just bored me.
* Special Mention: Vivienne - I didn't dislike Vivienne like most people, and she's actually pretty high on my favorite companions in DAI list, but I hated the fact that she was all about 'mages belong in the Circle'. I would've really loved to see her talk more about the Game, fashion, the elite, and so forth, but she was just a disappointment in that regard.
For the first two game, I didn't get to experience with much of the different party member because I wanted to have all three class in one party.
DA:O:
Most favorite character
Alistair: We all know why Alistair is lovable, He my one true love. I mainly stuck with him because I didn't want to leave him behind and couldn't bare to part with him
Least favorite:
Wynne : She nice, but a little to preachy
DA:A Most like
Anders: I really like this Anders. He help ease the lost of Alistair. He was charming and funny and since I found out he is the same voice actor for Cullen, I love him even more.
DA: A: Dislike
Nathaniel: Conversation is a bit dull
Justice: Same reason for nathaniel, but since DA 2, I hate him even more since he corrupt anders and suck the fun of of Anders
DA: 2 Most like
...... I didn't have one. I just wanted to back hand all of my companion. Okay Varric is the only decent one. Everyone was too depress and complain to damn much. Poor Anders, Damn you Justice for making Anders suck
DA: Inquisition
I didn't get much of the party banter because of the bug so I can't really say on this 100%
Note that I'm not calling them "disliked" - each companion has their moments for me, especially when they interact with each other.
Dragon Age Origins
Most Liked: Dog, Wynne, Sten.
Dog is just amazing, if for the camp scenes alone. I miss him so in DAI. Wynne surprised me, as there are not that many elderly women in games and she really meshed well with my main warden, a good if feisty elven mage. Sten, while not my best combatant, just has such great humor and this character arc is very nice.
Least Liked: Loghain
It's just that my my wardens can never do that to Alistair. Just... no. ![]()
Dragon Age Awakening
Most Liked: Anders
"Isn't that right, Ser Pounce-a-Lot?"
Least Liked: Velanna
Probably since she was so distant and often hostile towards the other characters.
Dragon Age 2
Most Liked: Aveline, Isabela
Aveline is just so amazing, she's a great tank to take along and her friendship track with Hawke is so endearing, not to mention the "two goats and a sheaf of wheat" arc. Isabela again surprised me, as I don't usually go for the racy characters, but she and Avelina together are just pure comedy gold, and I like act 2's finale when combined with an Isabela romance.
Least Liked: Fenris, Carver
Again, the most distant characters. I do appreciate Fenris's story arc, but somehow I never got the feeling Hawke helped him see the light at the end of the tunnel, even if you helped him all the way. Carver for his "who's the better brother" awkwardness.
Dragon Age Inquisition
Most Liked (so far): Cassandra, Cole
Cassandra has so far felt a lot like Aveline, the strong woman with the heart of gold who supports you no matter what. She and Varric are almost as entertaining as Aveline and Isabela were, although it's more serious this time as there is actual hurt there that they need to overcome. Cole's uniqueness made me appreciate spirits much more than Justice/Anders ever could. I bought Asunder just to read up on him.
Least Liked (so far): The Iron Bull, Varric
I haven't really got a feel for Bull yet, he just comes across as the most... disinterested (?) in what's going on. His banter with Vivienne is pure gold though. Varric seems somewhat bitter compared to DA2, which is logical, but I just miss my trusty snarky sidekick. He's better when grouped with Cole, who he seems to have a similar relationship with as he did with Merrill.
All that being said though, all the games have a great set of companions. I always make sure to rotate my parties regularly.
Least Liked: Loghain
It's just that my my wardens can never do that to Alistair. Just... no. ![]()
lol I know. I can't believe some people sided with Anora and either get Alistair behead or turn him into a dunk. I rather murder the whole city than lost Alistair (okay that sound a bit obsess.)
DA:o
Favourites:
Alistair, even though I'm a guy, he melted my heart. ![]()
Leliana, Such a gentle creature with such a scary past...
Morrigan, she was fun whenever alongside other teammates, plus she was refreshingly strong.
Least favourite:
Zevran. I know there was more to him than first apperance says. But the first appereance of him is so loud...made him a bit obnoxious.
Dragon age 2:
Favourites:
Merrill: So cute, so welsh, so powerful...
Aveline: Strong, brave, wants to always do the right thing, up front and honest.
Least favourites:
Anders and Fenris; Both are extremists, it feels like, and are so...aggressive, all the time.
Dragon age inquisition:
Favourites:
Blackwall: Fascinating character-arc, even though he doesn't have a lot of conversation-topics, it feels like. Also such a tank!
Vivienne: Well-written, smart, cold, sharp tongue...and after her personal quest...a woman.
The Iron Bull: Witty, fun, and his approach to spying is awesome.
Solas: Intelligent, wise, has amazing stories and a curious perspective on the fade and..well...everything!
Dorian: A true Tevinter patriot, even going against it to improve it. Smart, witty, and incredibly brave for abandoning his people like he did just to do the right thing.
Cole: Great banter, amazing perspective on things...fun to have around, basically.
Least favourites:
Sera: I just...ouch. At first, I was ambivalent for her, not sure about her. Then I watched a youtube video of her being romanced by a female dalish and I just...wow, want to slap her. ![]()
Really loving most of the characters in this game though.

DAI is iffy though, because I haven't yet spent enough time with Vivienne or Iron Bull to get a good feel for them. Same is true of Varric to a lesser extent. I like him more than in DA2, but I haven't spent much time with him yet. I like Solas, but so much about him is a mystery, I'm reluctant to consider him a favourite. Blackwall frustrates me as much as Anders.
Funny thing about Alistair is that he wa sliek my best buddy in my first playthrough but in my second I got instantly bored of him and found him to be exceptionally whiny, which worked out well since I wanted to recruit Loghain in that run anyway, haha.
Felt great to see him as a drunk in my 2nd DA2 playthrough!! hahaha, stupid Alistair.
I'm really enjoying redinig everyone's different opinions and what they liked. It's very interesting, especially the views on mages, I never thought the community could be so split.
Personally the events of DA2 shaped my view on mages, I was all about giving them a chance but throughout that game there were so many blood mages, it was like as soon as something doesn't go their way, blood magic!
I guess that's why I like Vivienne, mages have a right to live, but they can't be fully trusted with their power.
Varric is absolutely my favorite, though more so in DA2 than in DA:I. I like him in both but his friendship with Hawke is the best.
For Inquisition, and overall #2, Cassandra. She's such a layered character, and she's one of the best depictions of a faithful believer in any RPG I've played. I adored her softer side and it's the first romance in Dragon Age I actually liked.
For Origins, Alistair or Loghain. Because he's a great friend, even if he gets whiny sometimes. Loghain because he has so much depth, though we don't have him for very long.
I agree completely, I think this is why Vivienne hasn't gotten much of an emotional response from me so far. Pretty much all of what she has to say to the Inquisitor seems to be on mage/templar issues, with a little bit about her relationship with the Duke. I even brought her to the ball in the hopes she would have a more significant role. I'm hoping if I bring her for a whole playthrough, a wider range of her thoughts will come through.

DAO:
Liked:
- (really like) Morrigan, she's the perfect tsundere of dragon age, has the heart of gold despite her behavior (I think), though the game seems to force the player to dislike her
- Leliana, she can be both very cute and scary, but mostly scary (especially in DAI)
- Anders, who didn't love him when he was still with the Warden-Commander?
dislike:
- alistair, a warrior without resolve, always hiding behind something (mostly his jokes) for the responsibility he should've taken
DA2:
Like:
- Varric, well, need I say the reason?
- Isabela-Aveline, their rivalry is kinda great in some way
dislike:
- Sebastian, just like Varric said to Blackwall in his banter "all that niceness, he was just SO NICE!!", he's a perfect hypocrite
- Anders-Justice/Vengeance, "What the hell do you think you're doing?!" I wish Hawke had that dialogue option when he blew up the Chantry
- Fenris: bla bla bla, I was a slave, bla bla bla, magic are evil, bla bla bla
DAI:
liked:
- Varric, awesome as always
- Cole, he just make you (or me at least) want to hug him (not if you choose him to be more like spirit)
- The Iron Bull, the picture all religious people should behave
dislike:
- Vivienne, she's just a manipulative b*tch who only think about herself and her ambition
- Blackwall, he didn't as cheery and fun as I imagine he would be

DA: Origins
Most liked
Morrigan - Pragmatic, selfish and strong independent woman, with a gentler side below all that. Love her.
Loghain - It's sad he is a companion for such a short time. He does what he thinks is right, but in the end he can accept his defeat. Hardly a villain, this one.
Leliana - I really like her duality and how she struggles with her violent personality.
Least liked
Zevran - Egocentrical, sex-obsessed and frankly just boring. Not half as funny and interesting as he considers himself, which made him annoying.
Oghren - The most stereotypical and obscene dwarf in the department of stereotypical and obscene dwarves. His humor doesn't amuse me and apart from it and his 'stories' he has absolutely nothing to offer. Why did they consider it a good idea to bring the worst companion from Origins to Awakening is beyond me.
DA2:
Most Liked
Anders - Yeah, I know. I hate him as a person - always opressed, whining and complaining about everything. He's a worse buzzkill than Buzz Killington. But he is an undeniably well written character and has the most influence over the events of the game.
Varric - Because he's a good friend. He's funny, interesting, useful and loyal. Definately the highlight of the game.
Least Liked
Merill - Maker I hate her. She's the best example of what's wrong with mages. She will sacrifice everything - her clan, her friends, her sanity and life just to pursue a stupid obsesion. She's doing everything to make everyone hate her and disapprove of her actions, and gets really mad when you actually tell her that what's she's doing is dangerous. She's like a child playing with fire, and claiming that parents don't know anything. There should be an option to kill her.
Fenris - because just like Anders he would never stop whining - and for sleeping with my FemHawke and then not speaking to her for 3 years - because selfish reasons. And for trying to kill her in the end, when she decided against slaughtering the Circle that her sister was a part of. Seriously, **** this guy.
DA:Inquisition:
Most liked
Vivienne - Because she's awesome. Because she knows where she wants to be and how to get there. Because she says the truth about this whole nonsense rebellion.
Dorian - because he's funny, intelligent and a good, honest friend. And because his banter is awesome.
Least liked
Sera - Because she is a spoiled child, and because you have to constantly keep her in line. I don't hate her (I like to some degree everyone in Inquisition), but I certainly like her the least.
Blackwall - Because he lied which could have put the Inquisition in an awkward situation and because he was unwilling to face to consequences of that lie later, when they turned up to be not quite what he expected.

Dragon Age Origins:
Liked -
Morrigan; she is still to this day my ultimate favourite favourite Bioware companion of all time. She was interesting, prickly but most importantly so real. I'm so done with companions saying that the PC are their world and they would die without them bla bla bla. I was so surprised to have a strong, independant companion that has agenda with or without you. Much respect to her having a personality and character arc which is completely outside of the PC.
Alistair: I just liked his sense of humour, and he reminded me of a guy I was dating when the game was released. Shame he wasn't ****** though, but I still have a major soft spot for the guy.
Sten; at first I found him tremendously boring, but then I actually took the time to talk to him in subsequent play throughs and realised that his culture and his out look was entirely unique and super interesting.
Disliked:
Wynn. Preachy, old hag. Go away
Oghren: what did he have as a character arc outside of sleasy jokes and alcohol? Super boring character, and was bare upset when he turned up in Awakenings. ![]()
DA2:
Favourite
Isabela; my ideal partner in real life, with maybe a little less selfishness which is gone by act 3. Wild, care free and always up for a laugh. What can you not like?
Varric: my bro, enough really.
Anders: I know people have severe dislike for him, but I just sympathised with him so much about forcing a change, and unfortunantly most change does come about by violence. It's easy to condemn him by modern standards as a terroist, but people in real life died for equal rights. That's all he was trying to achieve.
Disliked:
Meril is an utter moron and I just felt like a pedophile by even talking to her, let alone romancing her. It's not even her appearance (I actually liked the elf update in DA2), it's her character. There's naive and cutesy (which I dislike anyway), and then there's just... are you still a child? I was half expecting her to say something like 'omg I don't have to cut my wrists anymore, I've started my period!'. and this is super hard for me because I thought I would love her because I love anything Dalish. Anything Dalish except her as it turned out, haha.
Sebastian was a hypocrit and largely ignored because you acquire him too late. Not a fan.
DAI:
Liked:
Solas, obvious elf fan is obvious. No reason to explain, everything he represents interests me and his own agenda is remisnicant of Morrigan.
Dorian, loved his comedy and sarcasm. His personal quest was abit of a downer (and this is coming from a gay man), but over all he was a laugh.
Sera, again I liked her and I liked that she was stubborn. I like characters that challenge me as a player. rather than automatically submit to my will.
Disliked:
The only one I disliked wasn't even because of him. I didn't really like Iron Bull because I honestly thought Freddie Prince jr masscred his voice acting. It doesn't sound believable, it sounds exactly like Freddie Prince jr just... I don't know, biting his lip and not moving his tongue enough. I'm not even sure what accent he's aiming for? What ever it is, it's lost and I just find Iron Bull insanely irritating because of that. But I get the vibe I'm in the minority with that, haha.
DA: Origins.... Not story orientated.
Most Favourite Companions
Sten - Became a friend instantly - Apart from the Qun, he gave some spotlight about the kind of life I'd love to live like. ONE LIFE, ONE DUTY.
I ever remember this phrase in the back of my head "A farmer wishs to be a merchant, a merchant wishes to be noble, while nobles dreams of becoming warriors. If you are a farmer, why not be a farmer turned-merchant and still farm... Ugh". Love times with him in party "Fitting", even though he was a boring and squishy warrior, he "was" definetely my favourite campanion.
Wynne - Mesmerizing voice in the camp, I love preachy people. I'm the sort of person that love to listen in real life. People who uses or tell stories to resume the consequences of life in a moment are like....very special to me. Reminds me of my late paternal grandmother.
Leliana - I loved the way you'd modify her personality. She sounds so innocent, very pure but she is quite a devil inside. The way her character was developing throughout the game was marvelous.
Poor Dog - I never used him, only time was early game and when I was "Captured" in Fort Darkon.
Least Favourite Companions
Zevran - I wished they had made a female character like Zevran. After the fact that he was in love with me just because I told him he's the most handsome elf ever made in DA. I got a kind of repulsive vibe whenever he talks and also he was very squishy in my team. Only took him throughout the "Nature of the Beast" quest.
Oghren - He became my favourite in DA - Awakening though. He felt like a rushed character in DAO, very few opinion. Asschabs...
DA2.. Not story oriented
Most Favourite Companions
Bethany - My sister in real-life is called Bethany - so i took it very personal. I didn't take her to the deep roads because her mother begged me not too.
Varric - A very good friend. Happy man, most handsome male dwarf ever in history.
Aveline - Best friend ever, my saviour, always there when I needed her right from the beginning. Tough woman like my mother.... strong-headed, family oriented, caring, very protective.
Merrill - Only because I romanced her. Nothing else. I don't like innocent characters much, though I felt i needed to protect her all the time.
Least Favourite Companions
Anders - Apart from the fact that they changed him after DA- Awakening.... I hate Anders so much. I have no more reasons.
Fenris - Ok, I love characters like this. Determined to have a mind on their own, a fugitive like Hawke. Always my rival. He is my least favourite.
I don't know. Maybe it's because I was pro-mage in DA2. There was no way I'd get along with him. I don't like people that question anything I do though I'm contradicting myself in this list because Sten/Vivienne are totally like Fenris. I'd persuade Sten in conversation and Vivienne's as lovely in everything she say.
DA:Inquisition.. Story oriented... I couldn't take it too personal though I have some reasons that'd feel flat.....somehow
Most Favourite Companions
Vivienne - My Goddess, my Queen, Lawful companion. surprisingly right from the beginning I never made her disapprove at all in my first and second playthough. Shocking enough till I recruited the wardens and let Morrigan drink from the well. That was the only time she disapproved. Also when I asked her why she needed the snow wyvern heart. I swear to the Maker I'm telling the truth. I didn't even back-save.
Blackwall - Very honest man, a bro for life person, wholeheartedly beliefs, a nobody but the best tank ever. Just like my Aveline but as a bro. I love the way he was so concerned even though he is not related to the story at all.... after I learnt he was a thug and a liar. I was like what are you doing in my now Inquisition Thom Rainer.
Cassandra - Lass lady only when romanced. I loved her but just because she is the only female romance I'd bear.
Least Favourite Companions
Dorian - Sighs- I'd love to hate him only and just because everybody like him too much. Willful, Arrogant, Obstinate.... Repulsive vibe. I did take him in party most of the time in my first playthough, but he made me feel stupid and he is always ahead of what I'm thinking in conversations. ^Personal quest was so out of place in DA Inquisition" for me. I felt awkward because I've never been in a situation like this, not even in real life. Even If his father was like screaming as he was then I'd be like... I don't know..
I'd have like his personal quest to be more dramatic.
Sera - Ok, I don't like kids that talks like Sera. I've a cousin teenage (young lady) that have this bad habit of talking down to people "Innit" BLAH BLAH BLAH kiss my ass wench,..LMFAO..... In your face. Same voice, some snaggy rythme, same energy, same vibe. And she is more louder than Sera and very fast speaker, loves destroying glasses. There is always a glass whenever she opens her mouth.
My least favourite is Dorian but Sera have given me some headache. I'll try talk to Sera whenever my cousin is on it again.
