Aside from the threating ancient evil (which wasn't exactly a new idea) and the Grey Wardens being very obviously influenced by the Nightwatch I didn't see much of a Game of Thrones influence on Dragon Age....okay maybe the Dwarf and Human Noble origins might owe something to Games of Thrones as well (althrough neither were exactly unique to GoT, nobles betraying each other isn't anything new).

DAI had the threating ancient evil again, three way Civil war, the mage/templar conflict devasting the civilian population, the main character building an army to restore order, I could very easily claim much of DAI was influenced by GoT as well.

Truthfully if either was heavily influenced by GoT I'd expect much more sex, prostitutes, secret meetings in brothels, prostitutes,  murderous plots everywhere, prostitutes, huge fatality rates amongst the main characters and NPCs.......oh and more  prostitutes.  :D

Seriously though none of the DA games have had the inherent darkness of the GoT world, the feeling that any main character can and will die (and probably a horrible death at that), that its possible even probable that evil will win in the end.

Eh.

People like to let the Save the World frame blind them from some dark sh*t in Dragon Age.

Save the World is just a device, the plot can go lots of way with it.

Anyway.

Lelianna becoming a disfigured monster (more emotionally than physically)
Numerous hints to rape.
Killing children.
Red Wedding-like scene in Orlais.
Broodmothers.
Politics.
Lots of murder.
Attempt at genocide.
More murder.
Slavery.

Etc...

I think it's a good mix between ASOIAF, a touch of Dark Fantasy (which is horror btw. People getting their genres wrong lol) and some standard good ol' LOTR on the side.

I like to think of it as a slightly lighter version of the Witcher series. But that's just because BioWare doesn't want to delve into the darker parts of Thedas. If they wanted to, it could easily go up there with TW. I'm just talking about setting here, though.

When shown the 'all conquering inquisition' future we had to deny it and view it as horrible...erm why? While yes some characters would react with horror, not all would, but we are forced to be good and pure and deny what frankly looked like an awesome story crying out to be told.

This isn't a thread about the gay relationships in Dragon Age, since they were there in Origins, this is a thread about the morphing of the Dragon Age series from a dark fantasy inspired by A Song of Ice and Fire to something more standard high fantasy.

Now I understand a lot of people like the high fantasy the game has become - "The world sucks enough, I don't want to play a game and be reminded of it", but as a fan of Origins who has been slowly driven to The Witcher series now, I'd just prefer a few more dark moments, atmosphere and mature topics again.

Yeah, no one died.

Although The Winter Palace could've been a "Red Wedding" situation, if you let it.

Eh, the tone wasn't right.  Orlais as a whole was really over the top.  It was like a running Monty Python sketch throughout the entire game.  The Winter Palace was fun, but it definitely couldn't capture red wedding levels of darkness.

The winter palace though is one of the ways you could get a game over by getting kicked out after which it becomes quite the bloodbath with the empress, the council of hearlds and maker knows who else killed causing Orlais to fall to Corypheus because Orlais has no leaders to fight him.

But it says "Game Over" when that happens, right? It doesn't let you progress?

It would be great if that could actually be a consequence - losing Orlais to the bad guys would've been awesome.

The Therins\Targaryans have dragon blood. Maybe not in GoT, but Dany claims she has it.

Seems more Diablo inspired now. Demons everywhere. Animals, people, and watnot getting corrupted. We even have the skill setup of Diablo 3.

There is a reason its a game over though if you get kicked out of the winter palace. You need the Empire of Olrais army to fight Coryphaeus's army, its later noted that your army with Olrais's army aid is struggling to fight's Corypeus's forces even without the demon army you prevented him from getting how would you expect to fight his forces if you failed to lets stay stop the demon army from being raised or Orlais was destroyed?

I couldn't agree more with the OP. He's spot on. Bring back the dark fantasy of origins.

I wish the combat was more like diablo. Would be way funner then the hybrid silliness we have now. I want full action or full tactical.

I'd say it's the same.

Anyway, I never got a GoT vibe from Origins. But I believe it's because the universe was souless, barren. The codex and lore might have hinted of something much more interesting, but the game failed to created a physical universe for us to play in. DA2 also had this problem... it was only with DAI that this changed, but I still don't get a GoT vibe.

Not to mention all Dragon Age are very comic book looking. It doesn't feel anything there can be truly dark.

I'm not sure what this is supposed to mean.

An old protag possibly dying, being able to make a mage tranquil yourself, Envy showing you what can happen if you become ""evil" letting an Empress die to put someone else on the throne ect.

Yeah DAI lacks no "edge" imo.

And the dark future and Liliana possible going full ruthless.

It would certainly have required a rewrite of the situation, to make it playable even though you failed to stop the Grand Duchess from seizing power, but man it would have been awesome as a scenario.  Its such an obvious route to go, I'd be stunned if it had never been discussed by the devs, back during the process of writing the story.

I don't remember there being any corrupted animals, save for the red lyrium dragon. The only corrupted animals I can remember are the ghoulish wolves and bears from Origins.

When Origins was released, the claim was made that ASOIAF had been a strong influence, by Bioware writers, on game.

You get a knock-off of the Iron Throne, to play the Game of Thrones, and can execute people yourself like Ned Stark.

The influence is still all there.

I didn't really get the Wardens actions in Inquisition. Like it made no sense to me, like they had all been drinking on the day that the Tevinter mage came over and then they decided that all resorting to blood magic and summoning a demon army to scour the Deep Roads and kill the Old Gods.

There wasn't even a tough moral choice there. The Wardens were just stupid and badly written in my opinion. It wasn't an interesting choice like "oh how far should we go to destroy evil?" or something like that, it was just "Oh my god the Wardens are so stupid today".

Eh, I just take it that everyone in a Bioware game is dumb as hell and under about seven different forms of mental compulsion/control/brainwashing, because they usually are.

So we're more Lannisters than we are Starks?

More interested in House Tyrell, so I spent a lot of time in the Emerald Graves and made an herb garden. It was the closest I could get.

Criminally bad writing in my opinion, which is a shame/
