So, what's the deal with the goofy hat flaps? Equip a hat on you or a party member, and said character suddenly goes bald and has what looks like some kind of Hat Sock on under the hat.

I can't quite fathom what this ridiculous-looking hat flap is doing there especially when we can clearly see hats being equipped without them in these photo previews:

"But those are just previews!" I hear you say. Surely these were simply made to look better than the actual game?

Not so, seeing as many many NPC's in the game are seen wearing such hats without the goofy flaps:

In addition, Cole wears his big floppy hat just fine, without hiding his shaggy mane under a hat-sock.

So again, I must ask: What is with these goofy Hat-Flaps? I want to wear them SO bad, they look pretty cool. But... those hat-socks just kill it for me.

Can we please, please get rid of them?

No idea tbh, an for someone who gets more enjoyment out of the aesthetic side of rpg's i will be honest an say it is really bothering me, same with there so called crafting where its the same armor for all 3 classes an the same schematic but tiered 3 times an then on top of that the armor is only a collection of flaps added over the pj's

Cole's hat is specially designed for his head (and hair).

The generic open-face headgear doesn't have that luxury. It has to fit any number of heads and any number of hairstyles.

It's dumb, and I thank Hide helmets every day, but it seems this was their solution to clipping. I doubt it's going to change (though maybe they can make it a bit more neutral in color).

I use hide helmets anyway, so I never noticed. I did use helmets for a while in my first playthrough, but my inquisitor was the only one wearing a hat like that, and she was nearly bold anyway, so it wouldn't have shown up on her.

It reminds me of the old LEGO hat they used for Johnny Thunder back in the day.

Dang it, now I have to make a Johnny Thunder character. :D

Nice looking hair + no clipping helmets = difficult.  So you get those goofy hat flaps...because it is easier.

I think it's so that they don't have to fit the hat to each companion's hair/head model. It looks terrible though, especially that garish white of the non-crafted headgear. I would rather deal with a bit of clipping.

Same. I understand having to deal with clipping issues somehow. But I'm with you, I'd rather have a bit of hair clipping here and there than deal with these absolutely ridiculous flaps :/

It's also kind of a dick move to blatantly show Inquisitors wearing these fancy hats with no goofy flaps in the previews.

Yeah , the Sexy Inquisitor Hat turned into the Ridiculous Inquisitor hat.

I'm not sure what was the issue , there's some  hair clipping problems in cutscenes with different npcs...Briala and a number of orlesians.

Anyway as usual most hats /helmets in DAI were awful , and everytime I put helmets on ( for Vivi and Cole) ten minutes after I would hide it again.

There's a couple of good helmet , Blackwall warden helmet , The Iron Bull helmet , Vivi , Cole ...

But lots of time you just end up looking like a party of clowns.

It wouldn't be 'quite' so bad if the flap below the hat didn't look so godawful. I mean, the Helm of the Inquisitor has the same thing, it has material that covers your hair, but it's just a bit of chainmail. Not great, but it doesn't look horrible.

The hats though? That look like someone took silly puddy and stitched Frankenstein's monster stitches into it. It's ridiculous :/

This actually might be my biggest disappointment. I was really excited for the hats.
