I've seen a lot of great looking quinari. I'm thinking of trying one. Can they wear normal mage armor that we get schematics for? Does anyone know this?

Yes,they can wear normal wears like 'Coat, Mail and Armor' aswell as the head gear 'Vitaar'
However, they currently do not have any race specific armor. Otherwise yes, they can wear it all.

That said, don't count on them being able to wear armor like Templar or Warden armor. Though I guess there aren't any Templar light armors. But there are Warden ones....

I'm playing a female mage qunari right now and had no issues with some different types of armor, plus one I crafted myself.
