Hello to you all.  :D

After playing Inquisition with a friend for 20 and something hours, I realized that I don't really remember much about previous games. I've played them years ago, have none of the save files - lost when changing computers and operating systems, willingly or not. I even lost my games so I bought them couple of days ago again. I don't mind honestly, much of the DLC is completely new to me. The problem also is that the default world state you are given in Inquisition is horrible. Then it occurred to me there is Keep, but if it doesn't import characters you end up with a default Aidan or someone like that (you can't change names, looks as far as I can tell). So, to cut the long story short, I will play everything from the beginning. Might as well, they are great games.

I will play as a male human noble. I wonder, what class would you recommend to me, since I am a beginner - rogue or a warrior? And do some stats affect choices in conversation? Because I remember they do, but I might be mistaken with a different game.

Also, I remember it is very long, and now with the DLC, do you have a recommendation in what order to complete them and not be overwhelmed by enemies  :o?

Thank you all so much

Would you mind sharing a little bit about how you and what you like to play? Who was your favourite character in Inquisition? What was your favourite role? Favourite race? What sex do you prefer to play as? Do you like conversation and romance or hacking 'n slashing? Would you rather stab things or make them go boom? Do you like having a prominent political role? Do you like revenge stories? Do you like blonds?

One question I can answer right away. Coercion and Cunning can both open up conversational choices that would otherwise be unavailable. Pickpocketing will open up a whole line of side quests. Herbalism will do that for one question for one side quest. There are others as well, but they are typically minor.

What kind of combat play you prefer...ranged or close one?On what difficulty you plan to play as well?

haha okay, one at a time :D

1 - up close and personal. that's why I don't like playing as a mage

2 - dorian, sera, josephine

3 - role? xD

4 - human, not very inovative I know

5 - a bit of both, actually

6 - stab then when I'm done all goes to boom

7 - of course! who doesn't like a bit of attention

8 - haha depends

9 - i'm a brunette so nooo

okay, so those are skills right? coercion, herbalism, etc.?

You may want to start out as a warrior. Rogue involves a fair amount of attention to combat to play well and they are squishy up front. If you play as a woman, your romance choices are one of two blond men and a redheaded woman. If you play as a man your romance choices are one black haired woman, one red haired woman and a blond man.

If you are playing as human non-mage, then you will be the scion of a prominent family and will have the potential for a political role, if you so choose.

Coercion and herbalism are skills. If you play a human warrior, skip putting points into herbalism. Do put points into coercion.

General advice: Save often. If you can name your saves (playing on a PC), do so. Speak with everyone you can. In Orzammar especially, pay attention to the ambient conversation when you first enter an area. Don't be afraid to ask for more money.

For each and every companion (as well as yourself), set tactics. The very first option should be "Health < 50%" with an action of "use smallest health poultice". Do this for everyone. The next slots should then activate any modes you want the character to use. For example, Alistair should almost always have 'Shield Wall' active. Morrigan should always keep all your weapons frosty.

okay, so warrior is a better option. shield and sword is alistair, right? so I could be a two handed warrior.

but what about rogues, are they that much harder?

romance options are interesting, so many hair colors to choose from  :D

p.s. will do that for tactics, thanks

Rogues just require more attention. They are my preference as they can sneak and open all the things, so there you are. :)
If you do go rogue, avoid being an archer. If archers didn't suck in Origins, they would also be my preference. But they do, so dual wield is the way to go. If you play through to Awakening, archers are kinda awesome in that expansion. So you can respec into one or just enjoy your companion Nathaniel as he kills all the baddies with his bow.

Then I'll go with a rogue, dual wield as you say. I remember Awakening being much darker, but not much else, so there is time until then. B) Thanks for the help so far, but what about quest order? Is there any preferable way?

I'm putting some of my advice under a spoiler tag because I do not know how meta you want to get.

In general, quest order does not matter much.

If you want to power game:

I know I have said this before.. Mage/Arcane warrior. You get the best of both worlds.. up close combat and spells to drop on the hordes of enemies. You can cast from a ranged position and then get in the thick of it with melee weapons.

You can play a circle mage, human/elf/male/female or a Dalish mage/male/female.

thanks for the reply, I'll go with a rogue for this playthrough and maybe for the next try out the arcane warrior, because I've heard it's a pretty difficult build

You can select 'arcane warrior' as the second specialization for either (or both) of your two companion mages. That would give you a chance to try before you buy, as it were.

Both of them are suitable, altho' I think Wynne looks funnier in armour than Morrigan. Not sure why that is.

I am not sure Archery is quite as bad as it is made out.  Granted, there are some talents in the tree that probably aren't worth it, but that is the same for most of the other combat or spell types as well.  You can end up doing respectable auto attack damage, especially with a cunning rogue (Aim, SoC, Dueling).  Scattershot is also pretty decent.

That said I have more fun with dual dagger rogue.  Lets you invest in rogue abilities faster, and you are in the thick of the fight.  Start out putting points in dexterity until you can get the better daggers, then go cunning.  Bard w/ Song of Courage isn't a bad idea.  Basically just need to pick up Coup de grace, Lethality, the first couple dual wield passives and momentum.  By the time you can put a few paralyze runes in the daggers and stack on a good poison, you can practically just let the rogue do whatever and mess around microing your mage.

As far as Arcane Warrior goes, I am not sure the build is too complex, but the main thing is that you are going to be playing as basically a standard mage for the first 1/3 of the game, and really if you want to keep your damage up you are still going to be casting magic attacks late game.

I've seen videos of cunning rogue archers destroying enemies on Nightmare. And you can have Dexterity rogues who almost never get hit. But the most fun I had with the game was with a mage. Blowing up enemies, paralyzing and shattering them, killing some bosses with one spell...

Yeah Mages are fun.  Partly because a damage mage needs more player input and micro to be decent (at least without killing your squad with friendly fire).  I only have 4 different mage characters though since I was achievement hunting (one for each school).  I don't really recommend investing just in one school to get the most out of the class though, although only Primal and Spirit work out ok for damage.  Creation at least has the Glyph line which is one of the most consistently good lines.

Heyy, I've just seen new replies  :) I've already started as a rogue, I've put only one point in dexterity so far and everything into cunning, he is a dual wielder, is that bad?  Out of equipment I have family sword, a regular dagger, then those pre-order items that are free on Origin now, a ring that gives +1 to every attribute, and one that gives bonus to backstabbing. Oh, and boots are The Lion's Paw I think. I didn't go for archery because they aren't in the front where the action is   Also, does anyone use that talent that makes you use both weapons simultaneously? He doesn't backstab then I think  :o

One of my favourite tricks for DA:O is to combine Morrigan with Wynne. Wynne uses the Earth chain, while Morrigan uses the Ice chain.

I've met Wynne at the camp in Ostagar, I guess I'll recruit her later on. I plan on using her as a healer and Alistair, but who will be the fourth I don't know. Tank, healer, me as a damage dealer, the fourth one would have to fit in that group (maybe mage as you did)

You have a chance to recruit Wynne later on.

The next two recruitable characters are a rogue and a warrior.

It isn't bad necessarily.  I like to put a few points in Dex first for Attack, Defense, and dagger / bow damage bonus first.  Cunning affects your rogue talents and doesn't help a lot with damage until you get Lethality or a buff like Song of Courage that depends on your cunning score.  It shouldn't make or break the game for you though.  If you have "The Edge" it is probably the best early game dagger since it has rune spots and bonuses to damage and attack.

Are you talking about "Dual Striking?" It has a couple whonky features to my recollection, like 1/3 of the attacks not doing damage (there is a fix on PC for that), and although you don't do regular critical hits, you can still get them in conjunction with abilities that can grant criticals (Pinpoint Strike, Stealth...).

Basically it can increase your damage, at least early when you don't have good critical chance (especially on a vanilla PC game without a base critical fix).

I have The Edge, but not enough dexterity points to equip it :( I will add dex. until I collect enough to equip it. Also, is it just me, or are daggers faster for backstabbing? It seems to me that with a sword it takes a lot more time to align for a perfect hit  <_< I have 1.05 version of the game, it is the latest patch, though Origin suggests that I have to update it again? To what exactly?

Daggers have the fastest attack speed.  When you have two weapons of a different type, like Dagger and Sword, the game uses the average of the two speeds and alternates main hand with off hand for attacks.

This is part of why people like dual daggers.  With more hits, you end up doing more damage over time with poisons, damage runes, or mage buffs like flaming weapons since each of those depends on just getting a hit.
