You can always go back to an area later, but by mid to late game you aren't picking up useful stuff out of those crates most of the time.

I usually try to shoot for Leliana to get 3 in that line and plan on getting her 40+ cunning w/ gear by the end of the game (isn't too hard to get by the third "recruitment" mission really).  I think some people will switch around gear with prebuffing or having a cunning buff set for crates, but I am usually lazy and leave cunning buff gear on her most of the time with defense or dexterity buff armor.

As I recall, Leliana starts with points in Deft Hands tree. If you plan to take her everywhere might as well use her as a lockpicker :)

Leliana, hmmm, to be honest, I don't like her.  Even if I did, I play as a rogue, and two rogues is too much for me. Two warriors and two mages is a better addition to the party (for me again) as I'm not that good at tactics, mages can kill faster, and warriors survive longer, as I've understood and seen for myself. Rogues are tricky, and since I'm stuck with mine already, I don't need two to watch out for

If you don't like Leliana I might consider getting 2 ranks in the Deft Hands line fairly early.  Or just not worry about all the crates I guess.

As far as survival, it is a bit complicated.  Most of the time to me it seems like who survives depends on what their build and role is.  In my experience, Sten is somewhat mediocre as a tank early game, so you might want to pair him with Alistair and use him for damage.  But then again 2 Handed damage seems to take a while to ramp up... depends a good deal on attack score improving, strength going up, getting the good abilities (Sunder Arms, Sunder Armor, Sweep, and passives) and getting your free stamina buffs.

Dual mages is pretty understandable though, but I guess I usually leave Morrigan behind for Broken Circle just because she complains about it so much. at the beginning.  The only thing to keep in mind is a couple rooms in this mission like to punish mage heavy parties if you aren't careful. :)

Thanks for the heads up  ^_^ I remember Sten, interesting character, but he died a lot as I can recall, so I didn't use him, only talked to him in camp.

He is sort of a late bloomer, and if he is your only tank he won't be efficient at that early game really.  Doesn't hit fast enough to work well with Threaten, Attack is mediocre until you buff Strength more (or get Asala), and heavier armor and or sustained abilities make his stamina a bit low for his damage abilities.  Get him leveled up with Champion, decent two hand attacks, and enough stamina to run Indomitable with your attacks, and he is pretty good.

You could consider running both he and Alistair, and if Alistair is getting the aggro, Sten should be able hack away.  I would probably go with Morrigan early game instead of him though, if Leliana is out.

Personally, I've found bow-Leliana to be a good addition to my double-dagger rogues. The AI also does a better job with an archery rogue than a melee one.

The archery tree is decent and her bard abilities buff the whole party. Generally, I take ranger as her second specialization so I can bring the ranger pets into the battlefield.
