I am just wondering if you guys are switching between all 4 available characters or if you just concentrate on controlling your created character.  I am talking about while fighting and free roaming.  Also, does anyone auto level all the other party members?  Yes, there are obvious benefits to controlling everything about everyone in your party but I wonder how effective it is.  I ask these questions because I am pretty used to managing just one main character and have found myself sitting in menus quite a bit trying to make each character exactly the way I want and I am starting to wonder if I am wasting my time by not just auto leveling them.  I am more of a Dark Souls or TES/Fallout player and not used to managing this many characters - not that I mind - it's just been a slight adjustment.

Oh, do you balance everyone out by switching up the party a lot or is it better to focus on a few of them each playthrough?

Thanks!

Firstly, I normally don't switch characters when fighting/free roaming, unless my character goes down of course, I do level other party members manually, but there doesn't tend to be any structure to it and I just choose whatever skills or passives seem the coolest, and I normally just have 3 party members that I use throughout my play-through( by this I mean I have 3 main different party members used each play-through) ; this helps with replay ability as well

I control m inquisitor 90% of the times. I only change for a few reasons:

1) I want to dispel a barrier or dispel fire of my team mates. I pause, click on Solas, dispel, then back to my inquisitor and unpause.

2) I want to 1-shot a wraith. I click on Varric. I queue Full Draw. I click back to my inquisitor and unpause.

3) The AI fucks up. I need to move Solas or Varric, or the tank. I go to tactical camera, move them all, back to normal and unpause.

I also never change my team unless forced to. I run with Solas as support, Varric as ranged dps, me as whatever and a tank.

In terms of efficency, you do not need to change your team around. If you want to hear all the fun banters it is a good idea to change out your party from time to time.

This game is not very hard, so you can do what you want to be honest. There are no punishment for changing party members around, playing only your inquisitor or playing all 4 in a very tactical pause-play. Anything goes!

When I switch to another character it's mostly for dispelling during Rifts.

Some things the AI just doesn't do well. Dispelling and Charging bull for example.. It kinda sucks but you have to roll with it.

If you understand these AI weaknesses, you really don't need to micromanage your characters at all when you pick the right skills and team composition.

Sadly that also means some combinations are less than optimal. 4 rogues could probably work out if all were controlled by players, but I wouldn't recommend it with the AI.  :bandit:

Also, I would advice against auto leveling. And the moment your party gets specializations you should respec the skill build for increased performance.

Uncle Strawberry, what is your own character's class and specialization (or playstyle). perhaps we can suggest a good party composition if you want to play with little micromanagement.

^ I'm running a dual rogue and I don't even have the specializations yet - but I am lvl 10 and about to choose sides.  I have been mostly side questing and free roaming admiring the graphics, lol.  thanks for the replies.

For a dual dagger rogue inquisitor I suggest the following party:

It's designed for maximum damage output for your character, and requires minimum micromanagement.

- Cassandra as main tank.
If you prefer another personality; Blackwall is equally good. Cassandra however has partywide buffs with her Templar spec. Set the taunts as preferred and set follow on herself.

- Varric as support ranged DPS.
His Artificer specialization gives you (and your party) +5% crit and +10% damage, with each crit lowering his own ability cooldowns. Set him to follow Cassandra to burn away the target she's tanking so she can move on to the next. This also reduces the chance of him getting unwanted agro.

- Lastly you'll want a mage for Barrier. All are fine but I suggest Vivienne for 2 reasons:
  1. Her barrier lasts longer with her Knight Enchanter spec. Combined with a barrier duration ring, you'll have a new barrier ready whenever the old one disappears.
  2. She can shield herself by damaging enemies, so more chance she casts on others.
Set her to follow Cassandra as well. Disable the Spirit blade from her specialization. Barrier to preferred. Treat her as a normal ranged mage, without melee.

With this build your own character is the all-star: He will do most of the damage and is buffed & supported by the party.

As for your own specialization: Anything goes, they all have their merits. So if you're not into min-maxing just pick whatever looks fun to you.
Having said that, I personally would pick Artificer for a couple reasons:

- Same as Varric you get the passive (Opportunity Knocks) which allows you to reduce your own cooldowns whenever your party crits. Which is alot. Also build Varric and his Bianca for max crit chance. Even if it costs him dps. You are the damage dealer, he's primarily a "buffer"

- The thieves lantern ability in the Artificer tree is basically a get out of jail card and heal combined. You place it during a fight before you get damaged, then have 15 seconds to do your thing and if you lost health during that time you recall back to your lantern, out of danger and automatically get back your health. This allows you to do some more dangerous plays and don't have to worry whenever you take a hit. Also with a high crit party (varric) and the cooldown reductions, it will be up a lot.

With this party and specialization, since you'll be doing most of the damage and thus kill shots, it synergizes well with the rogues ability to regain 50 stamina on each kill.

I micromanage to a degree. But I also control the character who is most needed given a particular situation. Also, it keeps me familiar with everyone's skills & how to use them.

Edit: No autoleveling.

I use the full party from time to time, although I focus more in my Inquisitor.

The only 2 members I usually dont touch are the Main Tank, and the Support Mage. For those, I usually just use commands from time to time, like "taunt this guy" or "dispel here".

I will have enjoyed manually in combat, in 2 playthroughs, a S&S dps templar warrior, a 2H templar warrior, a dps fire-necro mage, a dps electric KE mage, an artificier archer rogue, a DW assassin rogue, a DW artificier rogue, and posibly a 2h tank warrior.
