So, you can send your dog off exploring when you talk to him. And once in a while, he comes back with a random gift item.

Does anyone know how this works exactly?
Is there something you can do to increase his chances?
Is there a limited number of items he can find?
Does the area you're in matter?
Does his level matter?

I've tried a bunch of times lately, and he's not found anything.
Is there a point in still trying?

Im sure there are places where it would be scripted. Think Dogmeat in Fallout 3.

Area matters in at least a few cases. I know if you search in Ortan Thaig you find a pretty nifty hat.

You can get a cake for sten and a tattered note book for wynne if you work the docks by the spoiled princess. Havent found anyone that would like them yet but you can get some dirty pantaloons from redcliffe docks by the mage consortium guy.

All of the above can be gotten anywhere it seems. I have gotten all 3 in various areas using Dog. It seems he has one 'global' table and perhaps a few localized ones, like the Duty helm (part of the Effort set) in Deep Roads (but then again, I guess he could maybe dig that up anywhere too for all I know).

he is rather good at finding booze - got 2 bottles so far as well as items mentioned above and some money

LOL, I named by mabari Dogmeat in my first playthough.. Anyway, I brought me a magic staff when he searched in the Frostback Mountains, also got a cake in Lothering.

I also got a dirt covered root once (can't remember where that was) and the text mentions that I don't know what to do with it and I can't even find it in my inventory? Should I be able to find it or was it a plain item like a deathroot that just went into the pile with my other roots?

You can get that staff early on while your in Lothering. It's pretty useful early in the game, and probably the best thing he can bring you.

I believe that he can search a certain number of times. If you give him a gift, you can gain a certain number of bonuses searches.



But don't quote me on that.

dirty root was elfroot or deathroot i think.
area doesnt matter except for the effort set helmet.
oh, and cake is for sten. who would've thought!
i think the chances are random but it helps if mabari dominance is activated

I love the camera angle when he fails to find anything. It makes him look so dissapointed.
