Friend told me about this and it works, if got to Skyhold and have the influence selling NPC then go in and buy then sell back the influence token(s) without leaving store...then leave the store it will give influence to your character and you get to keep the gold too.

That's true, it also works on the Skyhold items merchant in Val Roueaux and, the codex merchant. You buy, then DO NOT CLOSE THE WINDOW, Sell what you bought, the game thinks you still have it but, you get the gold back as well.
