I hate to be that guy but...

The report neglects to mention the detrimental effect of social media, the continuing corruption in politics, the intolerance of hate groups, drop in education and lack of jobs, increasing poverty in western countries, high rise of unemployment in half of Europe and America, increasing number of people diagnosed with mental illnesses (depression being the major one) and finally not to mention the crap that's going on in North Korea and the Middle East.

Murder, rape and wars have been happening for centuries. So nothing has changed there but the internet has now made things worst. Alongside violence, we now have to put up with politically correct groups, cyber-crimes, hackers and groups that do morally wrong things but act within the law.

Also, statistics are different everywhere. Apparently rape crimes are at their highest over here in the UK and violence has increased too. http://www.telegraph...res-reveal.html

And according to Gallup, crime in America is still high http://www.gallup.co...em-noticed.aspx

Remember this data is all based on crimes reported. On the good years, many crimes could have gone unreported leading the statistics to show what looks like "decreased" crime rates.

I personally haven't seen crimes but I've seen what the poor politics has done to my country and it's not good elsewhere in the world either (look at Greece's failing economy, Spain and France's high level of unemployment, the **** that's going on in Russia and England). In my own country, I haven't seen things getting better. Years ago, things were cheaper, there were more jobs and less poverty.

Meanwhile Turkey is still holding onto a land they have no right to (North Cyprus), they're harbouring ISIS but the west is apparently okay with these guys. Why has Turkey's crimes been swept under the rug all of a sudden?

But what's really the worst part of today's society isn't any of this stuff (this stuff has been happening since the dawn of humanity). No, the worst part of today's society is the increase of idiotic trends and technology ruining social interaction. If you're going to try and rob me, at least be polite and say "please". Today's robbers will take a selfie with you, post the robbery to instagram and rob you without so much as a taunt such as "Aha! You've been robbed by the smoothest criminal on these streets sir! Good day!"

No but seriously, it's sickening to remember my college days (only a year ago) where it was hard to have a conversation with anyone because they only cared about updating their status on Facebook or some crap. The importance of social media in so many people's lives ("I have to update my status!!!11") probably explains the decreasing education and principles of today's society who seem to have no concept of privacy or dignity.

With 7,000 social media/forum posts, you wouldn't happen to be contributing to this would you? I mean really... condemning social media... on social media.

At any rate, I don't think it's ideal but I see it more as an evolution in relationships. I feel like more relationships in the past were in person and that's cool but frequently forced and then people realize later they don't like it or each other, get divorced, etc. People strike me as more careful now and that's why you have the popularity of social media, etc. However, realizing relationships are complicated but subtracting the in-person aspect (especially for like sexual relationships.. I mean really) doesn't make sense.. so perhaps more people will try to find the balance between caution and action.

Anyway, my addendum to the "things are getting better" is that at the same time "some people will always try to find a way to make things worse."

We whine on the internet because we have no power IRL.

I call that the devolution of relationship.

Also a high rate of divorce is a sign of screwed up society as a whole.

So it's ok to use social media to complain about the debilitating effects of social media, even though said use of social media is contributing to the said excessive use of social media.

I still don't get it. I don't know why the initial reason should matter. Also I feel like asking why it's so popular might yield some insight, some beneficial reasons.

Anyway, that all is just some other stuff but my main point is that I personally already said I prefer in-person experiences (my ideal), and it just feels a bit odd to be told by someone with 6,000 and now 12,000 high activity social media types that it's all bad, seems like they have been contributing to that overall popularity of social media as much as anyone.

^ SHUT UP.

I have spine problems (and no one takes me seriously IRL because of this) and I'm sure EP is disappointed in society.

It's not like we can shut down the internet for everyone and bring back the good ol' days.

I love the hypocrisy of the privacy debate.

People post their entire lives on Facebook/Twitter/Imgur, but the moment someone that they don't want looking at it does it's somehow an "invasion of privacy".

Currently, privacy only theoretically exists.

Isn't that the point of Facebook, etc.? You are in charge and decide what gets put up there and what people get to see. Privacy settings allow you to decide who gets to see it as well. But when the government or businesses are digging through your browser history and other, possibly more sensitive information, it's a different story.

Not to the extent that people think.

Do you know how many private corporations sell your personal information (including the stuff you think is "private")?

Do you know who they sell it to?

I'm with mousestalker half the way here. Globally, things are better. Most things. I think a lot of protesters here, simply have no perspective. And internet is mostly a positive force.

...But it's not going to last.

The two most important problems which will see to f***ing us up royally, is collapse of the ecology as a seriously overpopulated world tries to feed everyone, and global warming. These two devils cooperate, of course.

What brought us to this? Lack of education, lack of science, lack of technology and too much religions and wishful political thinking, I'd say.

Oh, I don't doubt that. But isn't that a practice that gets criticized in the privacy debate? I am not denying or defending that many people put way too much of their stuff out in the open, but I don't think it's right to just dismiss it as hypocrisy. Especially if the alternative would be no criticism against such practices at all and people being fine with all of their information being used for heaven knows what.

People didn't collectively start complaining until it was revealed that the government was doing it.

It's not as if they shouldn't have been aware that the government has been doing that. It was passed by (the US) congress years ago.

My point was rather the answer to the question itself. You see, *everybody* hoots "It's free! Everything should be free!" And then jumps right into the tar pit.
