I always felt my Hawke did it as a mercy to Anders. It was kinder than what people would have done to him had he been caught, in her mind. Not an easy decision for her, but the last best way she saw to be his friend in spite of everything.

She DID want to knife Sebastian for yelling at her to do it at all, though. Jerkface. <_<

But yes, if they let people have the option of letting Anders live, I hope we don't end up forced to witness or participate in a love interest's death. Even if it were tragically beautiful, it might just kill my soul a little bit.

I have a lot of different reasons for letting him live, depending on which character I play. My 'canon' agrees with Merrill. He shouldn't get to take the easy way out after setting the mages of Kirkwall up for a fight they're probably going to lose. He owes it to those people to protect them to the best of his ability.

I have a lot more Hawkes who would have stabbed Sebastian given the chance.

Agreed. Solas being a tragic hero (of his own story) would not make me happy, although I guess that's the point.

I can't say I'll be thrilled (I will probably be a snotty mess of tears) but if Solas dies no matter what, I'm ok with it as a player as long as BioWare lets me try.  Let me try to save him, let me try to change his mind, even if I won't succeed.  Like with Leandra in DA2, or trying to save Anders from Justice.

The enforced helplessness that came with ME3's ending or Thane's ME3 arc was what really got my goat.  Games are supposed to be an interactive medium, so let me interact with the goddamn story.  Don't make my character just stand there and take whatever's thrown at him or her with no way to roleplay or push back.

I have more faith in the DA team, though, especially after hearing Patrick Weekes' interview.  He's clearly put a lot of thought and a lot of heart into Solas as a character, and I think BioWare in general has learned a lot from DA2 and ME3 about what sets people off.
