This is all speculation/my opinion:

That Solas is an antagonist, that much was clear from when the epilogue finishes.

Whether he's a villain, I think that's up to our individual interpretations.

It's more likely that he's a rebel more than a trickster, which is why the Dalish have always painted Fen'Harel in such a bad light.

What does seem to be true is that he is ruthless. Leaving Lavellan, "killing" his oldest friend; all to rectify his mistakes. He is selfish, because fixing his own mistakes takes priority over everything to him.

However, he may think that what he is doing is good. That it will all be justifiable if he does fix his mistakes. To him, it seems like it's all a means to an end now.

I really think it'll be a pretty grey area type of thing. I do think all of these things, and I do think that he thinks he is doing the right thing even if it may not be, but I don't see him as just "evil" or "a cunning mastermind", etc. I'm biased, though.

I'll flesh this out as we go and get more input from each other, etc.

Yes indeed.

"It's more complicated than that"

Don't forget it's designer notes, it's there to set up moods and actions for scenes.
I think the wording might be extreme "kill anyone" but it doesn't matter much.

Are we really surprised by this? This is exactly what we thought that happened in that last scene :P

TBH I'm kind of relieved that Solas is the one who lives and not Mythal who has taken control of Solas.

Plus, as you recall from the scene, Solas looks conflicted, he apologizes, she does too.
She knew he'd come for her, she nurtured that spark of a soul for him to take. She's probably more powerful than he is after the sleep of 1000 years but she planned on giving him that spark. She could've resisted and smacked him down, and Solas probably knows that.

I find it odd that she didn't smack him down. She has her own plans, plans she's been laying down for thousands of years. I guess she's hoping that when Morrigan gets the god powers, she'll also adopt the quest for vengeance that Mythal was on?

I wish the notes addressed Mythal's desire for revenge too. I'm curious to see if that folds into his plans.

I'm also surprised and not surprised? I think it's the part about being willing to kill anyone that gets me. Or the fact that Mythal was keeping her power like a sheep for slaughter. The tone just sounds less grey than I was hoping for. Meh.

I'll never be okay with killing my favourite character in the series, either as the Inquisitor or as a new protagonist, nopenopenope, not gonna happen.

If something like that would happen I will rage quit :|

Yeah, I can't bring myself to think of him as evil. Ruthless and selfish? Certainly possible. But I still believe in the person who wanted to save refugees, hated slavery whether physical or mental, gave freedom to a mortal, and more. He's a very grey character; someone who appreciates his character as much as I or any of us may have a different interpretation, one of "evil", and it's not invalid.

I am so biased though and I will totally admit it. Oops.

I wonder if saying "Bad Solas!" when he tried to kill the mages or other conversations with him will have an affect on how this plays out? Maybe he has some hardening thing like Leliana. She's becomes really, really ruthless if you don't keep her merciful, doesn't she? I'm always "Bad Leliana!" when she wants to kill someone so I don't know.

As others have said above he did try to find another way, so that at least tells me he will consider a gentler path if he can help it. He's ruthless but not bloodthirsty. I hope what tarot card he has will affect his personality.

The wording makes me uneasy as well "kill anyone" ugh, I don't like that wording, that makes him sound soooo shallow.

Maybe she didn't smack him because Mythal is up to the plan? Maybe it'll help her achieve her goals? God knows /literally

That would mean you only get "kinder, gentler" Solas if romanced. Which would certainly be an interesting twist in regards to who could possibly help or talk him down, but there are a lot of people that had him as a bro who would be very upset if their friendship really didn't matter.

I do wonder if whether you let him kill the mages will be a choice in the Keep. That's one clue on if it's potentially important going forward, I suppose. :P

I don't see her nurturing it in a lamb to the slaughter type way, more a very important gift type way.

Oh, I think the relationship, regardless of whether it was romantic or not, should play a part. I just think it might be easier for someone who was intimately close to him. The same way only a romanced male Inquisitor could go through the Eluvian. I think that Solas bros/friends/whatever should definitely be able to help/talk him down whatever needs to be done. Just maybe not as swiftly or cleanly as a lover? And if the relationship was bad...yeesh. They're going to regret it if they punched him.

And ooooh, I guess the Keep will reveal things, huh?

What is this talk about the keep?

They are planning to add DAI world states soon or something?

There's some other potentially important thing that needs bringing up. The Well of Sorrows. It'll be cancelled out if Morrigan gets the god soul and drank from the well, won't it? Since it's actually collected to Mythal's soul. But what if the Inquisitor drank from the well?

They have Inquisition stuff in there that will be open in the future. When we're allowed to mess with it then we might find some interesting little decisions that will affect the future of our companions etc.

Yeah, the DA:I part has been there for a while and they've talked about the Keep here and there in regards to DA:I and importing. They also have the romance tiles that were done. There's something.

Maybe she always "survives" as long as someone drinks from the well? In that case the well choice might come up in whatever form of "Wolf Hunt" dlc we´ll get :P

Yes, I read somewhere it will be soon.

The Well of Sorrows will play a big part in this, I think. I just don't know if the best choice to help Solas would be drinking or not... he doesn't want you to drink, but... Ugh, I don't know.

I don't want to be bound to Morrigan lol, as much as I like her.

I really DON'T want that decision to affect Solas to the point I'll have to kill him.

I let him kill the mages (though I did regret it >_>)

Solas doesn't show signs of being 'hardened', unlike Leliana, I've hardened her by mistake on the second PT (by accident, I wanted to see how the dialog changes if I stay quiet, my first PT didn't let her kill the agent :().

Soooo many mistakes in my canon PT. Well, it's part of the game I suppose.

Edit: jeez, good thing I got a save file from before the first kiss, if something happens I'll replay the **** out of this PT >_>

If the Keep functions as it has, you won't have to replay a thing. Just make a different choice and import that for a world state.

Which is how I am now running a game where an elf mage romanced Morrigan and did the Dark Ritual so I can see Keiran. I did have a Brosca romance Morrigan and do the same, and as much fun as he was... I wanted to add that little bit extra elf oomph and have one be the OGB's father. Not having to play through two games to get it was wonderful. :P
