I recently tried adding Iron Bull to my party but I obviously didn't know how to use him and quickly removed him for a sword and board character. I never had any problems with Oghren in DA:O but Iron Bull was more difficult for me to control. It seemed that my difficulty was using his skills that target multiple opponents without him charging clear across the battlefield. I need advise on how to use him properly so I can have him on my team.

Disable charging bull since the AI can't use it properly.

Same goes for the Reaver abilities he gets later on. So yeah, he's basically a lot less effective than other warrior specializations if you're not controlling him yourself.

Tank warriors are a lot easier to keep without babysitting.

2h warriors are best played by your own inquisitor. Same goes for dagger rogues. It's a little bit sad if you happen to play other specs and want to use them as a companion anyhow but that's the way the cookie crumbles.

I have my Iron Bull setup to 2H with an AoE Axe. I let AI control him. I don't remember how I did it, but I think he generates guard on hit & so I never need to touch him. He does his own thing, with all skills enabled. The only challenge I have with him in the party is ensuring I don't have any other Warriors or DW Rogue fighting alongside him. Only ranged characters. That's because with FF enabled, he oneshots any other party members.

Edit: The exception is I make him my PC when I'm fighting dragons.

I should've said I'm playing on PC and I generally fight battles in tactical camera. Should I be fighting a 2H warrior under direct control? Your post raises another question that's been bothering me, how exactly does an AoE weapon differ from a normal one, if I'm using an AoE skill like Whirlwind it doesn't matter what kind of weapon I'm using does it?

Tac cam is not an easy way to fight all your battles in their entirety. 2H Warrior can be AI controlled, no problem. Some people say it's not good, but I have no issues with that. Specifically AoE weapon can hit multiple close proximity targets, opposed to just one target at a time. But I think the damage is a little lower overall on AoE. As far as skills like Whirlwind, weapon has no effect.
