To play this role properly would suggest you need to attract all the agro. So how to do you disrupt rifts whilst be being beaten on by all the mobs?

Usually as a dps class I can disrupt quite freely while all my team mates are entertaining the guests!

You can do it first thing, I guess.

I usually just didn't bother, because like you've noted it conflicts with your role.

You don't really. If you spec champion, I think  you can disrupt rifts while using Walking Fortress, but honestly, by the time you get that perk, you won't need to disrupt rifts in order to roflstomp the demons.  I played champion on nightmare and never bothered to try it.

You'll get more mileage while fighting rifts by using Dispel and Spell Purge to prevent most of the second wave demons spawning. A Templar (or two) and a Mage (or two) can pretty much negate a whole second wave between themselves.

I only disrupt when I'm playing a rogue inquisitor. Outside of that, I never needed disrupts outside of the first demon fight. I do use dispels for the second wave. Also nightmare.
