A topic which I'm almost certain was posted at some point. Ah, anyway, what did you name your mabari hound?

Also, do you think there is a certain tradition for mabari names in Ferelden?

After hearing Nan telling the story about Hohaku, I got the impression that a Native American name should fit the universe well. My mabari is named Ahote, which means "restless one" in Native American (based on google results :) ). Fits his personality perfectly :D

I name my dog based on what makes sense for the character. (I feel it's just as much of a reflection of a character as her decisions.)

- My City Elf just called the dog Mabari, because a) it's a pretty word that rolls off the tongue, B) it's a status symbol among humans, and c) she always wanted one. (*running through the streets* "I'VE GOT A MABARI WARHOUND!! I'VE GOT A MABARI WARHOUND!! SUCK ON THAT, HUMAN NOBLES!!")

- My Elven Mage called him Djab. Her name is Loah, a real-world Haitian word for Vodou spirits. Djab is a word for lesser spirits.

- My Dwarf Commoner called him Tawny, because it was the first word to come to mind when she saw him running toward her.

- My Dalish Elf called him Assanshi, a very loose combination of the elven words assan ("arrow") and shiral ("journey") which loosely translates to "traveling arrow." The way he ran toward her when she first saw him after Ostagar reminded her of a loosed arrow.

I tend to pick my mabari's name based on my character's.

My first dog cooresponded to Thanatos Cousland. I didn't really have a cooresponding name, so I named him "Akita." (My brother hates that breed.)

After that it was Shiva Surana, and when I realized he got to have a dog I alt-tabbed and looked up Shiva from Hindu mythology. He turned out to have a pet bull named Nandi, so the dog's name was easy.

Ares Brosca's dog was named Mars, after the Roman name for the Greek God Ares.

Umbra (latin for "shadow") Aeducan is the proud owner of Aurum (latin for gold, literally means "shining dawn" iirc.) In the same vein Midori (Japanese for "green") Mahariel named his "Akatsume" (Japanese for "red claw.")

Jeeves Tabris was actually named for a Jerry Seinfeld quote. "You know, when you name your son 'Jeeves', you've pretty much set up his life's path for him. What is he going to become... a hitman? 'Pardon me sir, but I'm afraid I must whack you." I decided that this name fit due to Jeeves' destiny as an expendable workerbee for rich humans, which he completely flipped off to become a terrifying Assassin/Ranger/Shadow who ruled both Amaranthine and the Denerim Alienage as a lord. The only dog name I could think of to fit this combination of ridiculous and badass was "FuLin," (or "lion dog") which refers to a stupid looking breed of tiny Chinese dog that nobles apparently threw into would-be assassins' faces. (The dogs were trained to hold on to this face with their teeth.)

Gawain Cousland was an easy one. Gawain of Arthurian mythology had a horse named "Gringolet."

Sarai Amell was also easy. Before the biblical figure Sarai changed her name to "Sarah," her husband's name was "Abram." (Her husband changed his to "Abraham.")

Diana Mahariel's dog is named "Aktaion" because I am a bad person.

On the non noble origins I typically stick with Barkspawn and blame it on Alistair.

Coustland tends to favor Bek.

Oralaios Warden favors Derrick.

I tend to name mine Ghost, since I used to have a mod that turned my mabari into a white wolf. And Game of Thrones... wut?

The name just stuck even after removing that mod and replacing it with a mod that changes it's appearance to match the DA2 model

Oliver, name of my beloved dog, but he already passed away 6 years ago because of the old age :( . When I was a kid I always imagining having an adventure with him, at least I can do it in DA O.

Yeah, I did this too with my childhood dog. It's my go-to name for dogs in games (comes up more than you'd think).

Cousland: Calenhad (I figure we call dogs Rex, so a king's name was good)
Tabris: Morrigan (first impression was not good, what can I say?)
Mahariel: Dog (rather literal, Mahariel was)
Surana: Greagoir (brute force channeled by blind obedience to a higher authority... he was not a fan of the good Knight-Commander)
Brosca: Horse (because it seemed big as one)

Each of my Wardens gave the mabari different name. My 'main' warden, Airam Surana, calls it Rask. For no reason, he just liked the sound of it.

Fabio Cousland (an elf mage) calls his dog Odin.
And Adrian Cousland calls his Mister (because I was reading Dresden Files when I started that playthough xD).

I try to name them dependant on what my characters would name them, but I have some difficulty of thinking of what people should name dogs and not calling them all "Horror" or "Red Maw" or "Slavering Death" or some such.

Zemariel Tabris: Fang. He wasn't sure what to call a dog, but it had lots of fangs. He thought it was going to be Alistair's dog, and that maybe Alistair could rename it later. It wasn't.
Guennean Cousland: I don't actually remember, but... I think it was something noble-sounding, based on some legend she thought was interesting. Aveline, perhaps, or after a previous ruler of Ferelden? She took it everywhere.
Senravin Mahariel: Didn't take it, didn't want it. It was a human lord's pet, in his mind. It did not make it in his reality.
Bryony Cousland: Arl Hound. She never liked Arl Howe. She thought naming the dog thusly was a great joke.
Narvinyel Surana: Killer. She was hoping it would kill for her, and didn't see much of a point to picking a different name.
Jezelda Aeducan: Bhelen. It seemed like the thing to do. She thought it bore a certain resemblance.
