My dog's name also depends very heavily on the character's origins.

 

My canon Warden (male Surana) calls him Taranis.  ITRW, it was the name of an ancient Celtic thunder god.  I headcanon that the Warden came across it in a book in the Circle library, liked the sound/assumed it was elvhen and remembered it based on that.

 

My F!Cousland named hers Calenhad, because a nobly bred dog needs a noble name, and what more noble name could there be than that of the Silver Knight?

 

My F!Tabris named hers Nelaros, in memory of her dead fiancé.  It seemed like an appropriate way to memorialize someone who risked and ultimately lost his own life to help rescue her.

 

My F!Mahariel called hers Shartan, to honor the hero and "ancestor" of the Dalish.

I stuck with dog a lot. Partially because I'm lazy, but also becaus a lot of my characters were the kind of people who would name him Dog for comedic value. Plus, my Dalish and city elf characters had no idea what one would name a pet, never having one before.

When I did get creative, I used Adrastos which seemed a fitting name. Not only does it sound kinda tough, it's from Greek mythology meaning "not inclined to run or flee from battle"

Kel from the Calling had a mabari named Hafter, so I went for Dane for Cousland. I am disproportionately proud of this name.

 

Aeducan had Kallak, meaning "war."

 

As others have suggested, if I can't think of anything I go with Barkspawn and blame it on Alistair.

I like the idea of a mabari being named Dane.  I may end up borrowing that for one of my playthroughs now

 

On a somewhat related note, my canon Warden considers his mabari an honorary Grey Warden, because it's the dog he helped treat at Ostagar who had swallowed darkspawn blood.  Anyone else feel this way about their Wardens' mabari?

There's an argument for it, especially if the dog is still carrying the Taint.

 

One of my favorite fanfic writers explored the idea twice, which may not be material but is certainly funny. Once with a Cousland's dog, (named Ranger) which got sick before the fic started (the story is narrated from Loghain's POV and starts Post-Landsmeet) and who she asserts is not only a Grey Warden but outranks the Wardens who visit Ferelden slightly more than halfway through the fic because they never bit the Archdemon.

 

Then there's a fic mostly from the point of view of the dog Sparky, whose master (a female Surana) didn't manage to talk Alistair into the Dark Ritual. Alistair hangs back and it looks like Surana's going to strike the final blow (she is certain this is deliberate) and the dog winds up landing a fatal blow to its throat. The First Warden makes what is probably the most hilarious monument in all of Dragon Age fanon: it is labelled "Sparky the Mabari, Dog Warden of Ferelden."

I named the mabari Dion in my most recent playthrough of DAO, after a character in one of my stories. Usually I name them Aeris, after my puppy growing up.

Chubs is a nickname he grew into. His real name, when I adopted him from the Humane Society, was BJ. Friends, family and neighbors teased me endlessly over that because apparently hearing me call out "BBBBBJJJJJJJ!" from the back porch whenever it was time for him to come inside was just too funny. 

 

I didn't realize until later that Chubs wasn't much of an improvement.
