Thank you! That has made my day!
I named my mabari pretty boring names such as Fang, Jake, Dane, Scruffy. Named it Fen'Harel in my Dalish playthrough (completely forgetting that he was the god vilified by the Dalish - I got him mixed up with Falon'Din) and Hohaku in my Human playthrough (after the dog in the story the cook tells).

I think I called him Hunter more than once, but the majority of the time he was called Bloodlust.

I modded the dog to use the the Winterfang texture and named her (headcanon'd it was a female dog, which has a proper term that I'm not allowed to say) Ammy. It was an Okami reference.

SpoilerAlso, villified or not, naming your dog after wolf-dog doesn't seem that bad. In fact, maybe I'll name a Dalish assassin "Falon'Din" and name his dog "Fen'Harel."Spoiler
Every time I see someone give their Mabari a wolf name, I think of Morrigan.
"I enjoy the company of creatures of the wild. Not stench-ridden, domesticated wolves."
I can't imagine wolves would be pleased with having their name bestowed on a stinky, drooling, domesticated dog.

Mabari aren't all that far from being creatures of the wild. They're certainly wilder than any dog I've ever had, including the ones that looked very much like wolves.
Edit: Or maybe they aren't. That poorly behaved chihuahua we pushed off on my grandmother seems to regard domestication as more a set of suggestions than a set of rules.

Sounds like that chihuahua could be related to a dog that lives one block down from me. If I deign to pass his window with my 65 pound Lab mix, he becomes a 10-20 pound ball of teeth and fury.
Then again, my experience with mabari-size dogs is that they're mostly big sweeties who want to fit in your lap. Little dogs, by contrast, seem to think they own the world.

Yes they are.
Mabari are selectively bred for humans, by humans, to serve human needs. Remember, they were created by Tevinter mages over a thousand years ago to have human-level intelligence (and apparently linguistic comprehension) to carry out complex orders. They then defected to the Barbarian war tribes to the South and have been with them ever since. While they're aggressive toward humans they don't recognize as masters, a ) they were actually bred to be that way since they are war dogs, b ) they are still hardwired to faithfully serve humans that they do respect. They're hardwired to imprint on a human master, and then serve that master faithfully to the bitter end.
Edit: Or maybe they aren't. That poorly behaved chihuahua we pushed off on my grandmother seems to regard domestication as more a set of suggestions than a set of rules.
It's not a matter of being well-behaved or docile, it's about being selectively bred to serve whatever purpose humans want them for, and carrying out that purpose.
Not all dogs were bred to be calm, obedient, well-behaved house pets. (In fact, throughout most of history, they weren't.) Just as an example... Most hounds were bred for hunting and tracking of some kind. Blood hounds were bred to use their amazing sniffers to catch even the faintest trace of whatever unfortunate animal or missing person their masters wanted to find, then use their very loud yodeling howls to alert their masters that they found something (so they can hear from any distance), and keep howling so their masters can follow them. By contrast, grey hounds and wolf hounds are sight hunters bred to chase rabbits (or wolves) in open fields; to lock in on them by sight and then run very fast to chase them down before they can get away. Huskies were bred to be active runners and pull sleds over long distances. Dachsunds were bred to hunt weasels in their own dens (hence why they're so small and long). Little fluffy dogs, like King Charles Spaniels, were bred to sit in the lap.
You see what I mean? Mabari might not be good house pets, but they weren't bred to be house pets. They were bred to be soldier dogs; to be unflinchingly loyal to their human masters, aggressive toward humans their master dislikes (whether it's an intruder on the property or an enemy soldier on the battlefield), and effective enough in battle to serve as a dog infantry.
Wolves? Foxes? Nope. They evolved for their own sake.

Only if you name your Warden/Hawke Daenerys. Otherwise I think you should name the dog Jhogo or something and name the PC Drogo.

Sif, named after the giant wolf boss in Dark Souls.
...Poor thing limps around during the last part of the battle, makes you fee terrible. But it's a perfect name for a mabari, a canine with such strong loyalty that they watch over your grave for centuries and try to kill anyone who tries to disturb it. Sif would do a mabari proud.

One game I was absolutely addicted to when it first came out was the video game, Fallout. The best companion character was a dog named Dogmeat. To honor this canine champion, I have named my Mabari: "Ser Dogmeat". Although to mix things up I did name him "Felonious" in the caste-less Dwarf scenario.

I name mine Dog. I find it doubly entertaining since the naming scene for the Mabari in DA2 has the characters commenting that you shouldn't just call him "dog", a nice little President Skroob moment for my Warden.

This is a very old thread it seems... but I'll add my Mabari's names!
Sometimes Duncan if my Warden gets him after he dies. If it's an Amell or Surana I usually name him Mouse because of the actual Mouse who helped her. My Cousland names hers Gil after Ser Gilmore who I headcanon she was friends with for years and sometimes my Dalish Elf will name him Fen after the Dread Wolf. It all depends on my mood and how my PC acts.
