For me it's the second game. The gameplay was much better than the first game and the replayability was so much better than the first and the third game at a lot of segments. The third game comes second to the first game which was just terrible even though of its great lore elements.

3„ even though it'll likely prove the least popular choice here.

I picked ME2. ME3's gameplay is tremendously fun, but its writing was far below standard, even before the ending travesty. There are a lot of moments when Shepard, in particular, says some incredibly stupid things. The worst segment is likely the Intro on Earth. Shepard, Anderson and the Committee all sound like they are reading a B-Movie script.

ME2 has fun, if not mind-blowing gameplay, and some very good writing. It's not perfect, and I wish it had pressed the plot forward more, but it's a damn good game. The ending is good enough that it continues to motivate me into replaying the 35-40 hour game time and again. I just yesterday deleted a newly begun ME3 save, about 6 hours into it, to jump backward to ME2, instead. The Suicide Mission and the old SR2 crew were calling.

ME2.

What would Citadel be without the part 2 romance options.

Mass Effect 3 (if you ignore the last two hours). Aside a few minor flaws (which game doesn't have them?) that game is a masterpiece.

#3 best story, best dramatic moments (Genophage+Geth War), worst ending (install MEHEM-derivate to let Geth/EDI survive!), Starkid = super annoying, can't stand his voice and dumb monologue; worst Questlog ever.

#1 best "open galaxy" feeling, I loved driving the Mako on planets, some had awesome feel to it (Bring Down the Sky looked awesome). Bad Idea was to split missions from quests because it made the main game feel very short. They should have made it so you'd need to do 5 missions to get a new main-quest update and not hand you all the main quests in a row.; bad inventory system, but at least they did display weapon stats.

#2 very good game overall, but extremely bad Weapon-upgrade system (no STATS displayed!), and very limited powers-system was boring too, felt a bit too linear., turning Liara into the ShadowBroker was a bad idea imo, she turned from a cute LI and comrade into a melancholic who'd stare at her consoles 24/7. I hated that.

I find this question increasingly hard to answer, as time goes by.

Each Mass Effect game is great in its own right. I enjoy every game of the series. Each improved upon the last and each single one is fatally flawed in one way or another.

If viewed as single games (not connected to the trilogy), ME3 would probably win, even though ME2 has the awesome suicide mission.

(Though, I find the ME series/Shepard trilogy only really works together, as trilogy. It then wins over every other game series I know out there)

In the end I voted ME1, as it spawned the whole franchise, and needs some love too. Besides, ME1 has the most coherent and 'working' universe of all games I ever played. Unlike the other entries, I never had the feeling that what I saw in that game was everything in/to the galaxy.

That sense of a vast, working universe, that does not rely on the player character to live // exists without being actually seen, was somehow lost in the other 2 games, I find.

One and two are pretty much tied up for me.  ME3 was horrid without MEHEM or MEEM.

ME1 was open, vast, and I loved going all over the Citadel.  I loved dancing with Liara and Ashley in the Flux Casino.  There were a lot of quests to be done on the Citadel - quests that even took you to find Prothean artifacts on Eletania.  I wish that the Admiral Kahoku thing with Armistan Banes had been fleshed out better, but it is what it is.  I loved standing on some of those planets in ME1.  You could hear the wind through your helmet, look up in the sky and see red and blue stars so close they looked like moons, and look down and find giant skulls of some animal that was imported and hunted.  All in all it was a great game full of mystery and fun with a hell of a fight on the Citadel to wrap it all up.  Seeing Sovereign in the background while you fought your way to the Presidium was Epic.

ME2 was a masterpiece of voice acting and really good combat - especially the upgrades for adepts and vanguards and infiltrators.  The graphics were amazing.  I miss some of the customization and inventory that we had in ME1 though.  ME2 always had me working hard to find out everything I could about the Reapers - and researching every possible angle to be at my best for the coming Reaper war in ME3.  I did well over 40 runthroughs in ME2 - sometimes just to take different squaddies on missions and hear what they had to say.

All in all, I like hearing different peoples points of views for the series.  The trilogy has certainly captured our imaginations and been the point of many discussions.

I'm a console player so MEHEM doesn't exist for me. I'm sticking to Red, Extended Cut. Sadly, this is the only option that has no closure for Shepard as it leaves us on a cliffhanger. Blue and Green ending gives more closure to Shepard's fate than Red and this pisses me greatly. Anyways, back to the main thread. Keep on voting people.

I'm surprised Mass Effect 3 is ahead. I always thought I was in the minority here in viewing that as the best game of the trilogy.

It's got its flaws, and enough has been said about the endings in the last couple years that I don't need to comment on that. But the endings and few other flaws aside, I thought it was far and away the best game of the series. The gameplay, interaction with squadmates, and story (for the most part) were all improved in comparison to the previous two games in the trilogy. It was also the most emotional chapter of the story by far.

2 was the best of both.

Tactical gameplay and lots of character focus, and the greatest mission I've ever played in a game.

I liked three for the genophage/Morning war conclusion, but I thought that three had weak writing overall.  I mean, seriously, Shepard had Spectre status.  She could've shot Admiral Hackett in the face and walked.  Yet, she was still calling him sir, saluting him, bowing to his every demand.

Seriously?  If you get picked by a council of alien beings, that have knowledge that is far beyond ours, as a special operative for the council, who are you gonna listen to?  The aliens?  Or some asshat that takes orders?  I know who I would be listening to.  And it sure as **** wouldn't be anybody that I have to salute.  That's fine if they are friends and are on friendly terms.   But it just rubbed me wrong, very wrong, that she called him sir and saluted him throughout the entire game.

I did like two better than I did one, but that was just for game play, or mechanics, choices.  Stuff like inventory, etc.  There is nothing that can defeat, "You are not Saren."   All except for its own mechanics.

I feel a bit bad for not voting the first Mass Effect but as a complete package, ME3 gets my vote. Aside from the ending controversy and Kai Leng, which lets face it, only constitute a very small percentage of the entire game, ME improves on everything in almost every way imo.

The third game comes second to the first game which was just terrible even though of its great lore elements.

I voted but i have no interest in a conversation which starts with "the first game... was just terrible."

I haven't finnished 3 yet. Ever since it came out i swore i'd do a marathon run with a fresh character so i'd remeber everything, well i finnally got around to it and each game is better than it's predescesor.

They're all great but everything besides the main missions in ME1 is so damn tedious and ME2 took away too many RPG elements but i think they really hit a sweetspot with ME3. Really love it so far.

I understand that this is a small sample of BSN, and not really giving us a clear picture until we get a lot more votes - but I am seeing a trend.  Interestingly to me, I'm seeing (generally) about 1/3 of the population likes each one more than the others.

How perplexing.  I mean, my opinion is the only right one, right?
