I loved all three very much, but the first will have to be my favourite :wub:

I voted for Mass Effect 2. I just enjoy playing that game the most out of all three of them.

In terms of story (plot, characters, setting/atmosphere), Mass Effect 1 was the best. But Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 also had good stories (despite what some others would say), even though the plots were fairly simple. But I could argue that the plots for ME2 and ME3 needed to be simple.

But in terms of combat/gameplay, I think Mass Effect 2 stands above the rest, even if it has a few glitches and annoyances. The classes felt unique and each class had some varied builds and playstyles just by changing the bonus power or bonus weapon. And Insanity was challenging but never felt unfair. And I think the protection was extremely unique and made you make the most out of your weapons, powers, and squadmates.

Mass Effect 3 refined and improved some features, but it also added in a lot of elements to the gameplay that I thought killed some of the enjoyment of the combat. Plus they removed the protection system (despite keeping some of it intact for some reason which was really stupid). And while the power combos were nice, they homogenized the gameplay to the point that some of the classes no longer felt unique.

So yeah. Mass Effect 2 is my favorite game in the Shepard trilogy.

My order:

ME2 > ME3 > ME1

ME1 is so low mostly because of the combat and mechanics. It tells an excellent story, though I think ME2 is truly the best across the board, story and all.

Mass Effect 2 is the best because it focused on what Bioware does best, and that is creating compelling characters. The game focused on your squad. Interacting with squadmates is the best part of any Bioware game imo and that is why Mass Effect 2 is at the top. If only it had Dragon Age style party banter, I would've considered it the greatest game ever created. In addition to the characters, Mass Effect 2 by far had THE best dialogue system in the trilogy. There was barely any ME3-style auto-dialogue and the dialogue wheel had so much variety. ME3's dialogue wheel didn't provide anywhere near as much replay value. The interrupts were also vastly superior in ME2. Even paragon Shep had badass interrupts, unlike ME3 where the only thing paragon interrupts did was hand shakes and bro fists. Oh and of course, ME2 also had the best final mission in the franchise as well.

Mass Effect 3 was an excellent game but there were quite a few things wrong with it, even outside the endings. The biggest problem being auto-dialogue and the lack of variety in the dialogue wheel. I also didn't like how they suddenly made Cerberus into space Nazis after ME2 showed that they were more complicated than simply being "evil, insane, racist terrorist, space Nazis". It felt like a half-assed cop out. The Illusive Man was an interesting character and to have him turned into a one-dimensional villain was really annoying. I also disliked the small role that was given to the ME2 characters. The Citadel dlc did improve things quite a bit but it was a little disappointing to see all the ME1 characters being permanent squadmates and all of the ME2 characters apart from EDI being sidelined for the most part. Javik was an amazing character though, so that's a huge plus for ME3. The genophage and Geth/Quarian arcs were really well done as well. The intro mission and the final mission felt rushed though.

Mass Effect 1 was an amazing introduction to the series. I loved the amount of effort that Bioware put into creating a believable galaxy. It truly was a SCIENCE fiction game. The main campaign was a little short but it still had the best side quests in the trilogy imo. The dialogue wheel had more variety than ME3 and we didn't have as much dreaded auto-dialogue but there were still problems with Shepard saying the exact same line no matter what option you choose on the dialogue wheel (although it was rare). Also, the combat and graphics weren't as good as later games.

Overall I'd rank it as:

ME2 > ME1 > ME3

2008 - ME1, duh

2009 - ME1, duh

2010 - ME2. I was wowed by it. And as a rather fresh Xbox gamer (only really played PS2 and PS2 games before that, and limited PC experience), I was impressed with its AAA shine.

2011 - ME2, though I'd be more open to acknowledging the downsides of going to ME2 after ME1. In some ways I'd put ME1 on top.

2012 - ME2, pretty solid here. I had issues with lots of how ME3 worked, despite its AAAness.

2013 - After all is said and done, I had to admit that I liked playing ME3 more. It had a flow that the other games did not. ME1 was also looking damn clunky and old.

Right now (2014), if I don't take dated-ness into account (which is major for ME1 and even ME2 at this point), I guess I love them all equally in different ways, but when I take dated-ness into account, ME3 is now in the lead, with ME2 close behind.

If at least some of my biggest theories about ME3 are correct though, ME3 takes the lead by far. As it is, sure its good, but only somewhat better than ME2.

Seeing as how ME3 is the Part 2 of ME2, this shouldn't be surprising.

ME1 still has its strengths in a few areas that make it superior to the other games, but it appears that it is Bioware's intent to up all of those things in their next game, fully leaving ME1 'behind' (in a way, at least), and ME2-ME3 to an at least lesser extent.

~~~
TLDR; At first I'd say ME2 for a long time because I was impressed by it, and disappointed by enough things in ME3, but eventually had to give it to ME3, especially as I attempted trilogy playthroughs. But I still acknowledge the superior parts of ME1, even as I just consider them parts and not an overall superiority.
Vote --> ME3.
But I certainly understand people voting ME2 and even ME1. There's things that happened with ME2 that did alienate ME1 players, and there's things that ME2 did that made it much more fun than ME1. It depends.
-Vanguard
-Ashley, Mordin, Thane, Legion dead
-Genophage Cure with Wrex and Eve
-Rannoch Peace
-Max Destroy ending with Breath
ME2.
The best balanced game IMO.
ME1 was great, but feels incredibly clunky when compared to the subsequent games. Loathed the Mako, the combat was 'unpolished' to say the least, and the inventory system was a pain in the @r$e.
ME3 had some of the series' greatest elements. Unfortunately, it also had some of the worst.
On reflection ME2 improves on a lot of things from the original game, and doesn't have some of the flaws of the third instalment.
I like all of them almost equally its basically one big game for me (in three parts) its also my favourite game
ME1 has this exploration feeling, ME2 is the most character focused and ME3 the most emotional one all three have flaws no doubt but together playing through the Trilogy was the best gaming experience for me so far
ME3 almost gets my vote for trying to right so many of the wrongs put in place by ME2 and succeeding far more frequently than failing, all in a breathtaking experience that doesn't shy away from necessary darker tones. But I'll always say ME1 mainly for this scene, which got the series' hook in me and never let go:
ME1 was the best story, honestly.
* Liara was a cute Archeologist, and not staring at her silly ShadowBroker monitors 24/7, and she wasn't so melancholic like in #2 and #3.
* more feeling of discovery and strangeness, like when you first land on Ilos, the haunting music, the creepy sculpture, or when you first drive on the highway over the clouds in Feros, that was amazing.
* Shep dies at the end, but then he walks out of the rubble, awesome ending! was holding my breath, and then really relieved.
* Landing the Mako on planets and driving around gave the game the illusion of an open world galaxy. some planets just looks amazing , well done.
* best weapon upgrade system, and most flexible powers system.
only real problem was - they handed the main questline out too quickly. should have required doing at least 3 random missions between each main quest, then the side-missions would feel more important and the game longer.
I voted ME1, best story overall and despite a clunky UI that marred the inventory it had the most fun selection of abilities and gave you the freedom to use them. The large world also gave you more freedom in how you approached a fight when you where outside, something I hope they'll bring back with their work on frostbite.
Overall the results are pretty balanced right now, each game had something for someone.
Mass Effect 2 is my favorite, but I think has the worst story by far. Everything else makes up for its story.
1 and 3 are tied for 2nd.
It would be ME3 if it wasn't for the ending so instead it's:
ME1 > ME3 > ME2
I agree with those that say the combat was much better in ME2 and ME3 (I especially loved the sniper riffle), but for me the story is more important and the plot of ME2 was pretty terrible.
ME 1 for story
ME 2 for gameplay
ME 3 for having both, until they fucked up the ending so badly
I realized when ranking these games among each other I always tend to leave the endings out of my mind.
So considering the endings, I will say ME1, ME3, and than ME2.
ME1 was somewhat original, with their influences tied in very well.
ME2 had great characters, but the combat system was dated the day of their release.
ME3 was bigger, and had a lot of fun content with the best combat system. Then it ended...
ME2 did have great characters, yet most of which I could care less about. Not in a bad or negative way. Just in a random person association way. Tali, Mordin,Jack,& Kusami were among my favorites.
Grunt, cool. Jacob w.e. Miranda reminds me of my neice, so up n down. Lol. Zaeed awesomely pssshh, Garrus grew on me in ME3, became on of my favs after ME3. Thane, pass. And I hated that Legion and the Geth became misunderstood good guys. I still slightly dislike that.
I enjoyed and had fun with all though.
Concerning the endings, I think ME1 was the best. For the potential hope and unknown surrounding the potential trilogy.
ME2 had a fun mission ruined by a uninspired boss fight, with a cliffhanger ending that left all the preasure on ME3. And we all know about ME3 ending, yet for me it was more about leaving so much unexplained.
I voted for ME3. Fun combat, good graphics, decent storylines, great characters. ME1 is probably my favorite after thinking about it, but ME3 is as enjoyable for me.
ME2 > ME1 > ME3. That's how I see it.
ME3 was my first ME game. I played it and fell in love. I then purchase ME1 and ME2 and (somehow) fell even more in love with this universe. After playing all the games and all of the DLC, my order above stands. I don't dislike ME3, I love it, but I like the other two more.
I'm happily surprised by ME3's level of success here. Sometimes I feel like an outcast, ranking it highest.
I love them all, though, regardless.
This is a hard one for me. ME2 has the best characters from the entire trilogy, while the plot is kinda weak, they make up for it. And the last mission is simply one of the most intense experiences that I've ever been through.
Though, ME3 was so damn good in many areas. I really enjoyed it's dark feeling, but after playing Inquisition.. It shows how much of potential that the game had. Sure, there's some bad designs choice like the autodialogue and the writing in some parts. If ME3 had the closure that I needed, then it would certainly be my favorite one.
Sooooo, Mass Effect 2.
I voted for ME1, maybe it's a sentimental thing because it was the first, but I still love playing it, even the Mako driving and Collection missions.
I loved everything about ME2, from the game-play (well except for the fickle cover system lol) to the dirty dozen type suicide mission.
As for ME3, I loved it  too. They really nailed the game play mechanics, like biotic/tech explosions, the cover system etc and the MP was an unwanted extra at first, but it became my favourite multi-player ever. All that said, me3 is the only one that by near the end (usually around Priority Thessia) I just want the game finished.
So for me it's ME1>ME2>ME3.
I agree with everyone who expressed trouble with deciding this. They're all really good in their own way and when I do a trilogy run, each game is a breath of fresh air. As such, I'm not surprised by the results.
I ended up voting for the first game, although I was close to voting for ME3. I just feel that ME1 has the whole package. Especially Saren and the whole ending is incredible. I can never get enough of scaling the Presidium tower with Sovereign looming enormously ahead. It's just a shame the background is so low-res, not completely bringing home the idea that those are wards with millions of people living on them... If we ever get a remastered trilogy, I'm looking forward to seeing this part hopefully fully optimised.
