Hard question to answer since so many changes between each title were made, but I went for ME1 in the end. The gameplay & the GFX aren’t the best, but the whole atmosphere, feel and sense of wonder brought by the original Mass Effect put’s it as the best one for me. Probably helped a lot by the licence it had since it was introducing everything to us and establishing the rules & universe to us.

MEs2 & 3 I was having way too many WTF moments from minute 1 of playing them. Why I’m I working with Cerberus? Why can’t I tell them shoo off? I thought I’d done something wrong to begin with, and then I thought this would be a short section like the Origin story for your Dragon Age 1 character. (Obviously it wasn’t, and that left quite a sour taste in my mouth.)

ME3 similar stuff, was expecting to be either already in the middle of forging the needed alliances or at least doing the trial section. I could probably class the games as follows:

Best in terms of lore, feel & atmosphere: Mass Effect

Best for gunplay, overall game balance & squad member missions: Mass Effect 2

Best visual style & best produced DLC: Mass Effect 3

Mass Effect 2 was the best. Bioware strongest strength is writing characters and ME2 focused on that the most. The story might have been bad but everything was perfect.

-Each class was unqiue

-All squad mates were unique

-The missions were the best

-The music was the best

-It had the perfect blend of choice making and action gameplay.

-Suicide Mission is Biowares best mission ever

-Tali's trial and Mordins loyalty mission are two of the best loyalty missions ever.

The only negative were the short story and paragon/renegade system but that's not exclusive to ME2.

Mass Effect 2 by far. It had hit a near perfect balance.

ME1 and ME3 just have way too much and too big negatives for me to enjoy their big positives like I can with ME2.

My personal favorite is actually 3 overall (even without multiplayer)

one is obviously the first but has many flaws

2 has the best combat and a streamlined story

Heresy!

Only the first Mass Effect is a true RPG and every sequel dumped down for the mainstream audience. Every true fan knows that.

Just because ME1 might have been the best RPG doesn't mean its the best installment in the trilogy, and its not.

All things considered, with all the DLC its hard to top ME3 in terms of story/characters,no matter how many awesome memories we have from ME2.

*sighs* Can I pick both ME 2&3?

If no, then ME3. Probably because of the Citadel DLC.

It's hard to decide which is the best between 2 or 3, but I'll go for 3 because it's the the one I've replayed the most.

Mass Effect 1: falling in love with Liara is the single most powerful moment in the whole trilogy for my female Shepard.

Put together they are all equally great. ME1 is a great beginning, drawing on the mysteries of the galaxy, ME2 added tension and improved greatly gameplay wise from ME1, and ME3 had some of the greatest emotional moments in a video game ever, for me (Rannoch, Tuchunka, citadel DLC).

However If I am to look at the games on the own, independent from the rest of the trilogy, I would say ME2. It trims down on the fat which was in ME1 and has a much more self-contained story, while ME3 relied on you playing the past 2 games (which is fine if you have but when viewed independently, it's a disadvantage.)

3„ even though it'll likely prove the least popular choice here.

Agreed, But ME1 comes damn close. Gameplay and item system is what lets the first game down.

I voted for ME2. Maybe I should have voted for ME3 though. But I've played ME2 most times and I simply loved how the ending was done. I don't hate ME3 (extended) ending as much as others still do and I absolutely loved the Citadel DLC (as well as the Genophage Mission etc.), so...I think they're pretty even for me.

Will know more when I get around to playing the games one after another :D

Now now... if ME2 had a love child with Dragon Age Inquisition and we had Mass Effect Next Gen, I'd be happy.

ME2 with DAI's open world and I'd agree. DAI side quest, on the other hand, are boring.

Had to go with ME1. I do realize that there is a lot of nostalgia in that vote and that ME1 has certain areas which were improved in the later games. But for me, in terms of story, the immersion in the universe and the extent to which I could just dive into the game, ME1 trumps both successors. Not because it is necessarily the better game but just because I am more fond of it.

ME2 + its DLC, even though in terms of story within the trilogy, it was stupid.  As a stand alone, it would have worked better, sans the Reaper menace from behind the scenes.

In terms of pure gameplay mechanics, ME3 was the tightest.
