Its too bad crewmembers didn't have as much dialogue as the squadmates in ME3.

Mass Effect 2 is my favorite, just because I loved the character development, and just how you got to know the characters, Mass Effect 1 was great for the mystery of this new universe, Mass Effect 3 had the most epic moments, such as Kalros fighting the Reaper, ending the Geth-Quarian war etc. It's hard to choose a winner, but I voted for ME2

ME1 -> ME3 -> ME2

Though I ranked ME2 last, I still greatly enjoyed it. It did introduce some of my favorite characters in the series after all, delivered incredibly memorable dialogue and scenes, in typical BioWare fashion, and most of the hubs were very well designed. Gameplay was fun, though very much improved upon in ME3.

However, the switch from that certain mystical wonder and intrigue that the first game captured so well, into the more streamlined atmosphere of ME2 was very jarring, and still leaves a bad taste in my mouth to this day.

ME2 definitely was the most polished in the series, and though ME1 has clearly shown its age, it has still retained that certain openness and mystery which made me fall in love with it in the first place.

I do wonder how things would have turned out if BioWare had emulated ME1 more closely, and improved upon its negative aspects rather than toss them out completely. But I suppose that's why we're getting the Mako in the next Mass Effect, and why the devs have alluded to going back to the roots of what made the first game so memorable.

ME1 > ME3 > ME2

Liked the squad and the missions in ME1.  I liked he way the missions were setup, going to a planet and having side missions that centered around that area, and a story around each each area.  The whole just getting on and off a shuttle, getting dropped off and picked up really didn't work as well for me.  Virmire is still my favorite mission in the series by far, and some of my favorite moments in the series are in that game.

ME2 is last because the collectors story really got lost in the game.  It was pretty much half the game get lists from the illusive man fill the order, come back get the next list.  Never knew what made the people so special that I had to have them and only them.  Then the other half of the game was doing favors for each of them.  The game didn't really advance the story at all, you could play Arrival after ME1 and almost have the exact same story. Finally when you get to ME3 these squadmates that were so special you had to get them and only them could be replaced by random stand-ins.

ME1 and ME3 (amazing what DLC can do for a game) are really the only ones I still play.

ME2 > ME3 > ME1

Play the whole trilogy regulary and ME1 is becoming tedius playing so outdated it is gameplay / inventory wise.

ME3 is for me the most pollished but the consessions due to MP is heavy.  Unfortunately MP clock won't be turned back and will continue playing SP part of those hybrid games for as long they are still available.

ME2- ME1 ------- ME3

ME1 had the atrocious Mako, bad gameplay, bad voice acting and was a bit drawn out (especially Feros and Noveria)

But storywise it was a great first chapter

ME2 should have mattered more (looking back it feels like a side mission) but thats Bioware's fault

they wasted most of the ME2 squadmates in 3 and they didn't care for the collector base choice
apart from that its great and eadily the best of the trilogy

I would put ME3 last
it had some good things (squadmate interactions, Rannoch and Tuchanka arcs)

but a lot of bad things
the ending might be the worst but it seems that it distracts from the other problems:

the prologue was pretty bad, cerberus was ruined, ME2 squadmates got the shaft, Harbinger WHO?,
autodialogue, Priority Earth was a joke etc.

ME3. I liked the campaign more than the previous games. Tuchanka and Rannoch were epic (and I hesitate to use that word due to overuse, but they truly were IMO). The Cerberus storyline was a bit crazy, but nonetheless made for some pretty fun missions. That ending has its issues, and I'll be the first to admit that, but overall I do like it with Extended Cut.

Then you add in MP, and all the DLCs, and it goes from slight favorite to an uncontested one.

ME1 has the strongest main story but the weakest combat

ME2 has strong combat and the strongest companion stories, but the weakest main story.

ME3 has arguably the best combat, but the story is a mixed bag.

That Mass Effect 2 has so many companions works against the game. That is the reason why some of those squad mates don't get a lot of interaction compared to their Mass Effect 3 counterparts. Garrus is probably the biggest example from ME2, but certainly not the only one. The more companion characters you have the more characters you have to spread the word budget between. It guarantees that some of them aren't going to get a lot of dialogue.

You say that James doesn't have much to say in Mass Effect 3, but compare him to either unromanced Garrus or Thane in Mass Effect 2. He has more dialogue and interaction with Shepard and other squadmates than both. You barely remember any dialogue with Liara? You must not have been going to her quarters then, because she gets more dialogue than Miranda, the squadmate that got the most screen time in Mass Effect 2. The only companion character with more dialogue than her in ME3 is Garrus. While Kaidan doesn't get as much dialogue as Liara or Garrus in ME3, he has more content than Garrus, Thane, Grunt, Jack, or Samara had in Mass Effect 2.

If you just prefer the character interaction in Mass Effect 2, I could accept that. People have different opinions. But claiming that Mass Effect 2 had more content is just wrong. Mass Effect 3 had a larger word budget and the squad mates more lines of dialogue than their ME2 counterparts.

Not to mention with so many squadmates in ME2 it was obvious that most of them weren't going to have much content most notably Zaeed and Kasumi seeing as how they were DLC characters its no surprise that they were going to get nothing more than a cameo at best.

ME1-------->ME3--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->ME2

First of this is a personal opinion so it based on what I value the most.

My priority in a game are

1)Story being meaningful

2)Exploration & Gameplay

3)Good characters

4)Graphics

ME1 is my favorite because

1) it did best on what is my first priority. A solid story enriched by great retrofuturistic aesthetics and top-notch synth music. Many interesting missions with different ways to tackle them added great value. (Noveria for example is my favorite mission in the entire trilogy).

2) ME1 also performed ok to what concern exploration and gameplay. It is true that the combat/inventory were clunky and exploration was lacking a lot of features to be really great but these features (inventory & exploration) were there to enrich you experience and add some variety in your gameplay. I loved exploring the planets and get the feeling/illusion of being in an uncharted land. That loneliness sense that gave me ME1 in visiting these worlds greatly added value to my immersion. Mako wasn't as bad as people depicted it. but BSN people like to drive with automatic transmission and power steering :P

Still the other two games totally eliminated this experience and I was so disappointed.

3) ME1 also introduced my beloved characters from the series (Liara, Garrus, Tali and Wrex). The best team I ever had. Each one of them enriched my experience with story and lore about their culture and traditions. Was really a delight.

4)Graphics are the lowest point of the game but that's because technology advanced thus ME1 felt the inevitable bite of Chronos. Still since is the lowest priority for me it didn't affect my experience that much.

ME3 is on the second position. Great game with a terrible ending

1) The story of this game per se is not bad but the unsatisfying ending ruined everything. Victory was too bitter to fully enjoy the experience a second time. Other than that the missions were great. Tuchanka, Quarians/Geth war and Mars were really great missions. However Cerberus was pretty much everywhere robbing the Reapers of their rightful position. The drastic change of Cerberus from a grey organization to outright evil also constantly reminded the player on how poorly developed was their story arc. They were a nuisance and this combined with many plotholes reduced the quality of the story IMO. The instrumental music was less of my taste.

2) ME3 has the best combat hands down. It felt fluid and fast. Weapons were good and customization enriched the experience. However the game lack inventory and loot, lack differentiation between light and heavy uniforms, lack weapons restrictions making every class pretty much the same. Level design were shooting galleries and way too linear for my taste unlike ME1 were you had a variety between different section of the game. The problem here was also the lack of exploration and the entire feeling of being part of a greater galaxy. Everything was so focused on the mission and you basically visited ruins after ruins.

3) ME3 brought back the old team and I was so thankful to them for doing so. To quote a Star Wars 501st stormtrooper "I didn't get along very well with the new guys" they introduced in ME2. Pity Wrex wasn't back but that was ok. Javik was an interesting companion too. James, EDI were meh to me.

4)Graphics were good but in this regard i'm an easy guy  to please.

ME2 as the lowest point of the trilogy for me

1) Simply put ME2 didn't have a story. Everything we loved and cared for was taken from us in the first 5 minutes and in a ridiculous twist we are brought to life by Cerberus. The main missions were pointless investigation of Collectors and acquiring new team members for our squad and resolving their daddy issues. The entire premise of the human reaper and human speciality was then dumbed down in ME3 making the entire plot rather pointless as the Dark energy plot was discarded thus making the human reapers and the Tali recruitment mission pointless. The suicide mission was the only good mission in the entire game because on how our team members contributed to the success of the operation. Other than that in the majority of the game you kill mercs and thugs for no real reasons other than recruiting someone who is not relevant to the plot. This is proved on how ME2 charcters were shafted in ME3. I like to think that provided some minor explanations you can pretty easily jump from ME1 to ME3 without problems. ME2 was a good game but irrelevant to the storyline. This is the reason why I put it here on the third position.

2)Gameplay was a good mixture of ME1 and ME3. Slow paced but rather enjoyable. I liked the weapon class restriction and the how every class felt different. I disliked the lack of exploration but not as much as in ME3. We had a lot interesting places to visit and the DLC helped in adding variety. Hammerhead was meh but better than anything.

3)I know a lot of people will disagree but I simply disliked ME2 squad members. I had my old crew and I wanted them back. I found many of the new guys rather boring (Jacob) if not outright annoying (Jack). Some of them were ok-ish (Miranda, Legion, Thane) other just Wrex 2.0 (Grunt). The highest point was Mordin which I found interesting and fresh. I also liked the Samara/Morinth duality. However aside from Mordin I didn't miss them on ME3. Suffice to say my entire game was a Tali/Garrus/Mordin squad. In ME3 they were poorly written making me care even less about them.

4)Graphics were good. Nothing to add here.

In conclusion ME2 got the worst position because story-wise and also companion-wise was pointless if related to ME3. ME1 and ME3 had sort of continuity that lacked in ME2 making it a stranger in the franchise.
