I'm fighting Fiona and company right now and I don't understand why Solas keeps on casting goddamn barrier on himself when he's not in danger. I gave the command to "defend" Cassandra while Sera, Solas, and I damage her from range but Solas is being a selfish bastard right now.
How to have mage not cast barrier on himself?

Set it to Disabled in Tactics and manually use it via Tactical Mode, that's about the only way with the extremely limited AI options. Very unusual that he is doing that though, are you sure he's not being attacked, and has LoS on Cass?

Maybe your tactics for Solas is defense self? For me my mage always barrier me as soon as I enter a fight, and I dont even set their tactics to protect or follow me.

Keep his health up and you should be fine. I couldn't kill her. Just turn the lever and that will solve the problem.
