Spoilers for Here Lies the Abyss behind the button.

Spoiler

And it's easy to prove that Hawke is childless because Hawke never mentions having children. When you flee Lothering, your whole family is shown and there are no babies. And no one ever mentions Hawke experiencing such a life-changing event as having a child.

People breed like rats though. And it isn't as bad as the Dark Ages. And mages heal more often than they destroy.
You're comparing a fictional world to IRL History... Specifically, the Dark Ages. The only reason homophobia became a thing was the spread of religion, which happened to include a homophobic verse or two. The Chant of Light does not, and prior to Christianity, homosexuality wasn't abnormal... In some societies, it was even encouraged. Bro, do you even Greece?

Even within our ancient world, there was variance between what was considered acceptable and why, and not all of it to do with religion. The ancient Germanic tribes weren't very keen on it. But as you say, homosexuality was quite common in Ancient Greece. In fact, in some parts of Greece at that time, a man who primarily had sex with women was considered abnormal.

It's really a cultural question, and in the cultures of Thedas, there isn't anything that discourages it. The only problems that seem to arise for homosexuals in Thedas is when they are the heir to a noble family and refuse to have children or marry.

What I would like to know is... why hasn't Tevinter created magical conception?

Science has made heterosexual procreation irrelevant (outrage!) - magic could have done it with a decision (being make believe and all).

THEN Tevinter can ban all sex as deviant because it produces impure babies with those terrible randomized genes - well, all except gay sex... hmm.. speaking of "why doesn't anyone explore..."  Let's explore a world where heterosexual sex is banned because it produces randomized results in procreation, but gay is okay, since - no babies, no mistakes.

Why are people brave for exploring "gay is deviant"?  That's not brave... that's just my yesterday.

As for "gay lifestyle" - wassat?  Having sex isn't a "lifestyle" - it's sex.  It's a singular act that does not define me any more than the million other singular acts I perform throughout the day.  Having a relationship isn't a lifestyle - it's a social contract between two individuals who can form such a thing for various reasons (one would hope, in our age, love has a great deal to do with it of course).

Do I also live the Tostito Lifestyle because I happen to enjoy chips (Tostitos to be precise) and salsa?  Or how's 'bout living the farmer lifestyle because I planted a few tomato plants this summer?

And do heterosexuals get a lifestyle?  They come in a huge assortment... and they're really fascinating people once you get past that "exotic fish in a bowl" stare they give you for being gay.  Though they do have a tendency to rely on us for their culture... it would be terribly upsetting to find out all my straight friends are missing a "lifestyle".

Poor Dorian... can't even explore your world issues without a bunch of people telling you you're doing it wrong.

Bioware almost did this in DAO with having the Dark Ritual be available to both Male and Female Wardens but decided against it.

My Hawke didn't have any kids. She shagged the elf, then hooked up with Isabela, then hooked up with Anders, then shagged Zevran with Isabela, then killed Anders. So unless she got knocked up by one of Isabela's crew, she doesn't have any kids.

Now I don't know if I'm just brain-dead from all of the drinking I've been doing this past couple of days, or what....

I can't comprehend the point of the original post. I don't get it.

Homosexuality in this game isn't realistic? What, so we have to have a background explanation for every single homosexual or bisexual in the game?

Do you need one for being straight? It's just how it is.

If anything, having homosexuality in the game actually makes it more realistic, acknowledging that it exists, unlike some movies you see.

But wait... who cares?

My Inquisitor has auburn hair. I think she needs a backstory for that.

Oh look, real life socio-political debate.

It's very possible I say this too often, but this will not go well. This will go poorly.

We could always go back to discussing why Dorian is the worst gay character Bioware has written so far.

“The 17-year-old daughters and sons of lesbian mothers were rated significantly higher in social, school/academic, and total competence and significantly lower in social problems, rule-breaking, aggressive, and externalizing problem behavior than their age-matched counterparts… Within the lesbian family sample, no Child Behavior Checklist differences were found among adolescent offspring who were conceived by known, as-yet-unknown, and permanently unknown donors or between offspring whose mothers were still together and offspring whose mothers had separated… Adolescents who have been reared in lesbian-mother families since birth demonstrate healthy psychological adjustment.”

This isn't something you can check from a study, my man. Same as why surveys and so on are inaccurate. Unless you're there with the child most of their lives, you're not going to be able to just say yep, this child is normal. And I ask again, what can a gay male couple tell me about being a heterosexual man? How can they even relate to me at all?

Because I'm literally you if you fucked your best friend.

And yes, it is as awesome as it sounds, the privilege is real.

Of course I did. My mother is a woman so naturally she can tell me about them better than a man, and my father obviously had experience and success with them. They're the first people I went to for advice. You can learn how to ride a bike on your own by improv, but it's a hell of a lot easier with advice.

Some people's parents have been married and divorced multiple times. Being parents does not necessarily make them experts in relationships.

Didn't say they were experts. My father and mother are divorced, and he is happily married now, but those failures serve as a guide as well, I would say. I certainly use my father's failures as a guide of what not to do. My father used to be an *******.

Above average in dealing with social norms like dealing with their own heterosexual relationships? That doesn't even make sense. Someone tell me what a gay couple can tell me about being a heterosexual man, please.

Explaining the basics of human interaction? How falling for another human being might work? Treating others with respect and how to approach someone you find interesting? You know, general stuff that might help? I've had a few straight male friends ask me advice on their relationships on occasion. It's not like I can't try to provide help even if I may not be into ladies myself.

And as a gay person who had heterosexual parents, I managed okay in the other end of the spectrum without another gay person there to guide me. As for having another perspective if needed, it's not like we live in a social void. If I ever decided to get children with my signifigant other, and we'd get a daughter who at some point wished to have a straight female view/explanation of things, I am sure one of our close friends who qualify would be more than happy to help.

--edit--

P.S. As for purely physical stuff, they also do go through that in schools. At least where I live. Not that parent's can't discuss that as well, but you know. It's not the only source.

This is nothing specific to me as a man of the heterosexual persuasion.

Anyway, I've given my two cents. This has nothing to do with Dragon Age really, so feel free to return to your normal broadcast.

It kinda was, I'm very grateful to based god that I don't have to deal with women and their feelings...

If I have a problem with some machine I reset the PLC, and if I have a problem with the dude I just bring more beer, it's all good, innit?

Why does anyone need to show you how to be a man? It's more about being a decent human being in general and most gay people I've met are equally as qualified to help teach that as any straight person. Society doesn't get to define if I'm a man or not, that's for the people who are close to me to decide.
