I didn't really like the female american voice on the "investigate" options, she sounds too uninterested to me. And a lot of this game seems to be investigate options. Not been super keen on british male either, but I tend not to like male protagonist voices.

They aren't all bad..Steve Blum, Troy Baker, Mark Hamil, Nolan North, and many others are fine examples of male protagonist voices

I never played a male and probably will never so I cannot comment on the voices. However playing a female, I much prefer the American accent to the British one. The British one sounds to gritty and male for my taste <shrugs>.

The female British accent sounds gritty and mannish to you but the American female voice doesn't? Is this opposite day?

I enjoy monotone voices, the American male one is just perfect.

Did I get them mixed up?
Isn't the American voice the first/default option and the other the British or am in la la land today?

I think you have mixed them up. The British female voice is much softer and the American one is harder definitly what I would call gritty.

Yes, I think you got them mixed up. =) British is soft and feminine. American is deep and mannish.

I haven't used the male voices but I used the British voice for my elf and my qunari has the American voice. I think the voices suit each of them perfectly. As a general rule I personally prefer the British voice but I'm British too. But I don't think my qunari would have sounded right with that accent.

They are just fit for different characters. Which is awesome. And both male VA performances have their flaws. American one sounds like he's trying hard to make his voice lower then it actually is, while English one sounds like a completely different guy if you pick some "tough" lines.

I do wish there was more variety though. It's weird hearing my human's voice coming out of my elf ><

It all boils down to personal preference, I thought Jon Curry did an excellent job voicing my Qunari Inquisitor, would never have thought it was Zevran's voice actor had I not known it. I've yet to do a playthrough with the Sumalee voicing the Inquisitor, all in good time ![]()

I preferred the American male voice rather than the British one, and was sad when it bugged out. I wasn't really keen on the female American one though, it's too monotone and just... I don't know, lacked flair, lacked emotions. At first I thought the British female voice actress was Jo Wyatt, because she sounds so much like fem!Hawke and my SWTOR Imperial Agent...

I do really like the british female voice, but I choose the american voice for my female qunari because I thought it suited her better.

To me certain accents suit certain races or character backgrounds.
i.e. British for Human and Elves, American for Quanari and Dwarfs, unless you have a really classy Dwarf ofc....

It depends a lot on the character for me. Some characters work better with the american voices, some work better with the brittish.
Some lines fall flat or feels wrong for all four voices, but overall they are all quite good.
All of them has grown on me as I've played and you hear more of the emotional range they have as you get put in different situations.
Loved the amusement you could hear in female american's voice during Cassandra's book quest for example.

Both voice sets are great. My human mage is hilarious with American VO.

Jon Curry's voice for a Qunari is perfect.
I'm crushing on my Inquisitor.
Thought that the Brit Female was too much Samantha Traynor. Couldn't get her face outta my head while playing my Elf. While I like her voice, shouldn't have gone with such a recognizable VA that wasn't able to alter their voice for the player character.
Thought the American Female voice was 'flat', although by the last quarter of the game it grew on me.

Sumalee did great for my Qunari mage, like some others have said especially the more dry or sarcastic lines were great. On the other hand Alix was great for elf especially. I guess it's a common theme in these comments.
I'd have loved more voices but can you imagine the amount of voicework for each added voice? I totally understand two...

As people have a choice,
little is served by being rude about less preferred voice selections.
I think the different VAs did a terrific job.

Yes, the American accent sucks, but what does that have to do with Dragon Age Inquisition?
Totally subjective obviously. Many American accents are fantastic sounding.
Britain would be problematic for you then, lol.
Ok, seriously--and not talking about just this post...what's this strange idea that British accents are effete? Is it that one voice is tenor and the other bass? Is it irritation that 75% of north american women have a pavlovian response to british accents? (totally made up statistic, but I bet it's right up there). What's the deal?
Agreed that it's ridiculous that so many perceive an average British accent as sounding feminine-ish, but it probably has some association with sounding foppish. Re: American women having a response to a British accent, meh, eh, whatevers. (American woman here) Some British accents are sexy- just like a lot of American accents are sexy IMO. But just being a British accent =/= sexy.
That said: this game has me now obsessed with Welsh accents
. Solas sounds so completely amazing ![]()
Anyway per the OP:
I have a hard time playing with the female American voice- when my quiz was asking questions she just came off sounding like a dullard or a simpleton which was horribly annoying. Thankfully- the Hawke accent glitch rescued my play through and my first quiz got switched over to Alix. It's not that I find Sumalee as having a horrible voice- she doesn't- I just found her delivery wanting in a lot of the different situations acting wise.
Unfortunately I'm going to run all British female accent from now on. Can't stand how dead her voice sounds asking questions. I know lots of lovely women IRL with a better emotive voice than hers ![]()
P.S. MaleShep was a great voice- especially if you play ultra douchebag renegade ![]()
