I like seeing towering Pride Demons / Giant purple spirits so I'm pro Spirit Mark. Also... Has Necromancy in Dragon Age ever been more pet class-esque? I honestly can't remember.

Not entirely true, this was an enemy mage that a Necro had captured the ghost of.  When some new enemies came into sight, the ghost cast fire mine around himself,  My teammates had been standing nearby, and it one-shot them.  It seems for the mage ghosts, their spells will still hurt your team.

I'll have to watch for that, but the last time I possessed one of the Venatori mages he was attacking the enemy like he should have been. He cast some glyphs but I didn't notice if a teammate walked over it or not.

I don't get what this issue everyone has with spirit mark is. My Necromancer has it, and when the last enemy dies, so does my minion, every time. The key always drops. And yes, I did notice this from trying to carry minions over to the next zone. It's automatic.

Oh noes, do the dirty console peasants have the superior version!? How dare we!?

Also, yes, confirming that the ranged attackers have much better AI, and enemy archers do very well as minions. Venatori Brutes can also be great on the boss wave, because of knocking down larger groups of small fry, but otherwise aren't really worth it.

You keep bringing this **** up, and I keep asking WTF does that have to do with the state of things in this game?

If by using spirit mark I can fix the key glitch by forcing a certain enemy to die last, I'm going to pick it up no matter what.

A whole hell of a lot more than Mass Effect does.

I'll just let you contemplate your own bullshit.

You really are pretty dense.

I'll humor you.

The original game has everything to do with the current state of this game. WHY is everyone getting frustrated with glitches, poor battle mechanics, useless abilities, etc?

Oh I don't know maybe because they didn't copy Origins well enough as they should have. And you n00bs to the DA series are disrespectful to where DA comes from.

Does that clear it up for ya?

In a good group spirit is horrible, everything dies too fast for it to do anything. Blizzard will do more damage than mark in that situation.

Back in the days of DA: Origins, possessing your enemy was easily one of the most powerful abilities in the game. If you had the blood magic tree with Walking Dead, not only could you have a single corpse as an ally, but Blood Control which allowed you to have even the toughest enemies fight on your side. Pair that with a rogue with the Ranger tree, and you could have three NPCs fighting for you. Unfortunately the DA games have fallen from their former glory, and much like with the Grey Wardens, the people have forgotten.

Necromancer's Gravelord tree is a great set of skills. You've even got an ability that lets you do more damage if the enemy has high health AND another ability for enemies with low health. However there's one ability on the tree that most people in multiplayer like to talk **** about: Spirit Mark.

Well first there's something you've got to understand. Those people are trying to ruin your fun. In an online game, if someone gets overly bossy and rude, they often find themselves alienating half of the players and eventually wind up in groups of other uptight people who have the same vibe as them. Well we don't want any part of that. If you think Spirit Mark is cool, you shouldn't be harassed about using it, especially if you do it right.

Find a party that's OK with what you're doing. Have an Elementalist or something ready in case you feel like running Perilous with some decent people who are polite about it, but really would rather you didn't use Spirit Mark. Most people on Threatening aren't going to care what you use as long as you've got a warrior and a rogue with your Necromancer, but for Perilous just make it clear that the only AoE you're going to be casting is Horror.

  • Observe your enemies. Terrors (the green demons that pop out of the ground), the templars that give buffs to their allies and shoot red crystals from a distance, and generally any enemy that is preparing a powerful attack against your party - these WILL remain hostile upon being possessed, until the last attack they were preparing before dying has finished. If not done carefully this can lead to people getting very frustrated with you.
  • Prioritize targets before you engage, and mark them with an attack order so everybody knows which one you are possessing. That way the sooner they kill it, the less likely what I mentioned above will not happen.
  • Archers, ranged attackers and foot soldiers are the best to possess. They're actually stronger than they were before being possessed, and will attack frequently, doing 225% weapon damage each time. Theoretically they should be more powerful than larger enemies that attack slower.
  • Use them to guard choke points, allowing your team to backtrack and get chests out of rooms without pulling the mob. Archers are especially good for this because they will engage even though they are far away.
  • This should be obvious, but make sure you're releasing enemies from possession who are isolated and no longer have enemies to engage.
  • Spend a skill point on Power of the Dead, which is right above Spirit Mark on the right side of the tree. This should be a buff to Spirit Mark. Also make sure you upgrade Spirit Mark itself. Walking Bomb is a must as well.
That's about it! I'm currently about to try running some Perilous with an open-minded party for the first time (I've done it with intolerant people) so I'll update this thread if I have any more information.
Horror is the only AOE you will be using...Walking bomb is a must. Lol wut? Walking bomb is one of the most powerful AOE attacks in the game. Also after lots of testing, Spirit Mark doesn't work properly. Most of the time the mob you possess just stands there. I've promoted my Necromancer 11 times.

Sabotage worked great, the AI actively sought out and attacked enemies, it was one of the first things to get nerfed.  Even after being gutted it was still an excellent skill.

"Excellent" is an exaggeration imo. But it was certainly superior to Spirit Mark at every stage of its balance life.
