Just a paranoia. I have a physical copy of DA:O and was thinking of just getting a digital copy of Awakenings through steam. Given steams jerkness at times of install directories, would this be a problem with Awakenings?

From Steam's purchase page for the expansion:
"This expansion pack requires the Steam version of Dragon Age™: Origins in
order to play."
So you will have to get the retail expansion if you've got a retail copy of the game.
