Has there been any consensus reached on the assassin's Mark of Death? That is, do you need to manually trigger it to get the damage, or will it happen automatically if it runs out?

The consensus for maximizing damage on MoD seems to be:

  1. Mark of Death on target
  2. Hidden Blades on target
  3. Whatever other damage you can deal to target
  4. Stealth or upgraded Flank Attack
  5. Activate Mark of Death (automatic critical from stealth)

IIRC there is a damage bonus for activating MoD early (like 2000 or so damage).

@EngineerEd thank you for this, I've been wondering the same thing as @hong and haven't gotten around to figuring it out. =D

Ta. Just some more questions though:

Why Hidden Blades? I'm playing an archer and having to run in to throw stuff at the target is a bit weird. Actually you could say the same thing about MoD itself.

Are you saying that MoD can crit itself, on top of the rest of the damage you do? :o So you can effectively get double-critical damage?

Bump, anyone want to weigh in on my followup questions?

If you're an archer, get close for Mark, hit hidden blades, backflip out with Leaping Shot, hit stealth and then trigger.

You have to be quick about it, but it pays off big time.

Hidden blades does 1800% weapon damage, it's not necessary, but is a commonly used combo.

The only thing that comes close in one ability is full draw on a full HP enemy. Since you're a rogue archer, you could change the combo to be MoD on target, full draw, hidden blades, *insert extra damaging abilities from yourself and companions*, stealth, activate MoD.

Yes, every critical you scored in MoD adds to the total Mark activation damage, that activation damage criticals again.

You trigger it if you are soloing something in a group fight while your party is fighting something else (ie: double or triple giants in Emerald Glades etc) or if the target would die when you trigger it and you need the restealth (so that you get the kill).

Never used it. Do you trigger it by hitting the same button it is assigned to?

I've been playing DW Assassin for a while and had no idea MoD damage itself will crit if you activate it out of stealth.  That definitely changes my strategy.
