Is it just me, or does the pro-Templar run make for the better story?

I like the Red Templars as the main nemesis, a once proud and noble order twisted into a sham of their former selves instead of the Venatori and reinforcing the disgusting notion that Mages shouldn't be free and deserve to be oppressed.
This. I found the Red Templars to be better mooks than the Venatori. At Haven, the boss at the Trebuchet is this giant red lyrium behemoth while if you side with the Templars, the boss is just a buffed venatori mage. Red Templars > Venatori.
I felt sick knowing some rapist or abusive Templars would get away with what they've done if I helped the Templars so I pretty much always side with the mages and I prefer the mage quest tbh. The fact that I get mage independence and acceptance plus wiping out the Templar Order pretty much means I love siding with the mages.

Yeah, its kind of a toss up for me as well. I am glad to have done both. I still prefer the satisfaction of saving the mages over the Templars though. I still can't shake the feeling that the Templars asked for their fate and its somehow Karma doling out its consequences for them. So I feel a bit 'unclean' abandoning the mages and aiding the 'bad' guys.

I feel the same...which is why I got the pro-Templar playthrough out of the way first. My last playthrough is my canon, and it's mages all the way. But I'm glad i played it because it seemed there was more story there, and I'm glad I understand those things for my future playthroughs.

For me its the opposite especially once I found out what the Tevinitor did to the tranquil while the mages did nothing, It was bad enough they aligned with Tevintor even if they turned out to be cultists but I can't believe they didn't know what was being done to the tranquil. But realistically neither side are the bad guys though other than their surviving leadership on both sides.

Oddly enough I think time travel and Alexius are the only redeemable things about conscripting the mages. I agree though the disbanding of the Templars is the better mission.
On the other hand conscripting the mages fulfills Morrigan's prophecy in Witch Hunt. So, big picture - mages. DA:I as a stand alone - templars.

Um you fight Fiona at Haven, not some random venatori mage....

The only thing I really regret out of not going with the Templars is the fleshing out Cory's character gets in Calpernia's quest.

I actually liked the time travel bit, and I like being a jerk to Fiona, conscripting the hell out of those Mages.

Also Samson is as interesting as no name tissue paper.

I still have to play the Templar side, my first char is a mage and ... it makes not much sense for me to side with the Templars because she isn't a bit like Vivienne. And the Templars/Lord Seekers first appearance really does NOT make me wanna join them (I therefore assume mages will be somekind of canon by Bioware ^^)
The Templars I never really liked that much, even in Origins. DA2 didn't make it any better.
Now I just wonder whether I use an older savegame of my main char and do the unthinkable and side with the fanatical lot, or roll a new char...maybe a warrior hmm...

I prefer the templar mission as I just found it more interesting and engaging. The stakes felt higher IMO, as the envy demon was trying to take control of you, and if you failed it walks in your skin.
I do think that there should have been more content for both sides, both before and after. There should have been multiple different quests. also both should have gotten to learn about cory.

The templar mission felt flat to me. I really liked the idea behind it but the implementation didn't touch me like In Hushed Whispers did. Alexius was a great villain and Leliana's and your companions' fate really got me. Even felt sorry for Fiona.
I think Calpernia's quest is better than Samson's though.

I did both missions and I got to say by far I found the templar mission more satisfactory. What really nailed it for me was that after conscripting the Mages I couldn't put Fiona on trial for siding with the venatori. Yes she was 'tricked' in a way, but that explanation still don't fly as far as I am concerned. The King grants them official refuge and their brilliant idea is to kick out the Arl and all his men because some random Tevinters offered you protection? Forget the whole 'magic' thing, your colossally bad judgement is reason enough to lock the lot of you up.

I really didn't feel like Calpernia was leagues better though. Both of them (And Cory) would have benefited from more content. Also Samson is as interesting as no name tissue paper.

Pretty much. Plus you see Samson as someone who wants to help the Templars through the notes on him.

Calpernia was an awesome antagonist. I hope she returns in future games if you let her live.
I highly doubt that considering she says she's going to confront Corypheus and if she lives she'll return to Tevinter. Considering Corypheus doesn't seem to be the merciful type, I highly doubt she survived.

Agreed OP.
The time travel garbage in the mage plot just turned me completely off. (Really didn't help that I remember the E3 choices and consequences crapola with the clips from that mission. Sorry but a "do over screen" is not "we sent Leliana in her unprepared and she was tortured and that would damage our relationship with her". Get the hell out of here with that bull).

I agree, but like the trope goes, if you don't see them die, there is always a possibility that they are alive. I'd agree she's LIKELY dead, though.

Well, it's not even really "pro-Templar", which is the great thing about it. If you conscript them (which you should), it's about bringing them to heel.

Yeah, its nice to be able to choose a side but not necessarily agree with them. Still, I can't in good faith condemn the mages

I so agree, I shook my head when I actually saw the whole thing play out. I can't believe that lie was even told.

I get that making decisions like templar vs. mages are a big thing for the developers, but I think Inquisition would be ten times better if we got to do both the templar and the mage sides.
