How much do dialogue decisions and/or actions and even the order you complete them in, actually count or mean anything?

Are their multiple endings to the game or is their just one and then the state of the world you leave behind?

Can you actually fail? (besides obviously dying in game)

Can companions die, or leave or betray or turn against you for whatever reasons? Can you betray or turn against companions?

Yes or a no answer with as little detail in explanation as possiple and no spoilers obviously.

I just want to know how much my decisions weigh ad how powerful my dialogue choices are in developing the plot and ultimately concluding the story. Is it more like DA2, (Never played Origins all the way nor have I givin two cracks about Mass Effect) is it like Deus Ex where the outcomes and different plot developments lead to nothing but 4 decsions that make the ending or is it something more like the witcher 2 where you have entirely differenet endings and even drastically different scenes leading up to the end and choices during the epilogue that you would only have based on decisions made in the game earlier on or in the middle.

How much is it worth me investing time to expand on my characters backstory and role play, very specifically, in character?

Got three characters made. Two Rogues and a Warrior. Sevoir (Accent above the o to make it sound ike the word "noir"), Vaunic, and Vand'al (I spelled it Vandul with an accent above the u) and right ow Sevoir

is level 7 Chevalier style warrior and have been putting of Val Royeuax till ive cleared the Hinterlands of Rifts and other quests I shall not go into detail because I wonder if things will go differently in Val Royeaux  if ive done more elsewhere. Ive even killed a giant and cleared bandits out of storm coast plus the main quest.

Ive made 5 save files with each character so I can not only go back to the very beginning and play out another adventure without recreating the perfect faces ive crafted.

Anyways discuss and provide feedback/answers/input etc.

The latter, epilogue slideshow changes.

No.

None can die*, but they can leave you. Generally, you have to outright tell them to leave when they hit their big disapproval scene.

Spoiler

By far the biggest change depends on if you complete "In Hushed Whispers" or "Champions of the Just", which changes one minor antagonist you'll face throughout the game, giving you a different small mini-questline.

I'm not sure how much I can say because this is the no spoilers section, but:

One part of the ending is based on the dialogue options and the actions you make throughout the game. It's not like DA2 where nothing you do changes anything

Another instance of dialogue options affecting the game is if you fully embrace the "Herald of Andraste" title, you'll get dialogue options reflecting this. You'll also get dialogue options if you reject the title.

Race and class also effect dialogue options - I played an Elven Mage in my first playthrough, and I saw unique dialogue options for both of these factors. My 2nd playthrough is as a Human Rogue. I'm at level 9 and I haven't seen any unique dialogue options for this.
