When s/he sees Flemeth, or rather, Mythal, s/he DOESN'T know that she's also Flemeth. However, s/he calls Mythal "Woman of Many Years" (don't know the Elvish spelling =P. Then, later, after realizing that Mythal is also Flemeth, the Inquisitor can say that the Dalish call Flemeth "Woman of Many Years". Is this just a mistake or something. It might be, seeing as when my Dalish Inquisitor was at the Temple of Mythal, Abelas called her "shemlen".

Yeah, just wondering if this was an oversight or what.

To an ancient immortal elf -- a Dalish is a shemlen since the term means "quick children" e.g. not immortal .. essentially to Abelas and

Spoiler
everyone is a shemlen except other ancient elves ... it is not meant as an insult by them it merely is a fact-- other races including modern elves are not immortal, they are mortal and die quickly. Only modern elves use it as an insult and a hypocritical one at that .

As for the Mythal thing--

You know, DA: I gives a whole new perspective on Flemeth's comment to Merrill in DA 2.

Well, the dialogue where Lavellan asks Morrigan who Mythal is (which makes no sense for a Dalish protagonist) could suggest that the developers dropped the ball in other areas of this quest.

Except you don't have to ask that question. Just because it's there doesn't mean your Inquisitor would ask it.

Although to be fair they could have at least phrased it differently as the questions are also there for the player's benefit.

But I'm fairly certain that not even the DALISH are aware that Flemeth is Mythal. If it were common knowledge, then they wouldn't act as though Mythal were dead. Flemeth and Mythal are, in the eyes of those who don't know the truth, two different beings. When the Inquisitor first sees Flemeth s/he knows her only to be Mythal, and yet s/he refers to her as Asha'bellanar, which is what the Dalish call Flemeth.

History knowledge perk gives you special dialogue with Flemeth, she knew who she was but what really bugged me with my elf was when they were in the Arbor Wilds and Morrigan tells her the temple of Mythal is there my elf automatically says "which is?" I mean wow your a Dalish elf, you should know who Mythal is or even the temple of Mythal.

Maybe there's some dialog that loops improperly. I thought it was odd that my Dalish seemed be unfamiliar with who Mythal was supposed to be and that Morrigan had to explain it.

Yes, exactly. It seemed really, really strange for a Dalish to be depicted as so ignorant of basic elven "knowledge".

This irked me as well. I was always confused in Origins as to how Mahariel didn't have a clue who Flemeth was, going by the Dalish in Stolen Throne and Merrill in DA2. It must be hard for the devs to cover all the bases on racial starting world knowledge (there must be a better way of phrasing that).

I actually liked that "Morrigan lectures the Dalish on elven basics" scene.  It felt like my Lavellan was trolling Morrigan.  XD

Back to the OP's note: Since Abelas and Solas do not see the Dragon Age's (the century) elves as their people, I hope that we see more ancient elves in future installments as Solas told Abelas that there still may be others of his kind.  Solas, you TEASE.

Yes, it must be remembered that they do want new players to the franchise, so not everyone is expected to know the various lore. Having the option there is perfectly acceptable. However, I do agree that the question might have been worded in a different way for a Dalish Inquisitor.

On my successive plays of DAO I've avoided certain dialog options on my mage relating to questions about magic ("What's a phylactery?"), templars and the like that my character should know the answer to; and now that I've played the game numerous times I know them as well, so I can avoid those questions for roleplay reasons.

Because the game was written for a human protagonist and the other races were shoehorned in late in development.  I suspect they hoped to add more race specific reactivity, but ultimately didn't have enough time.

The Word Budget is an unforgiving tyrant.

I HAVE that perk, but having that knowledge would still NOT give the Inquisitor the knowledge that Flemeth is Mythal.
