Recently I've become convinced that whatever version of patch 2 I have installed does not include a fix for the mesh issue. I'm just writing to ask whether I need to install the hotfix separately from the patch and/or how to figure out if I have the fix.

What mesh issue? You would be able to tell if your shaders were still broken.

The latest version is 1.0.0.3. You can see it in Programs and Features (or you can root around in the installer files).

Where it's stuck on low rather than ultra, because of the patch 2 coding. While DA:I looks good on my machine, and my machine is certainly powerful, it's running a bit too smoothly with everything on ultra at 1440p. As a result I'm not sure I've addressed that issue. I'm not getting the visual quirks people say relate to ultra settings.

A bit too smooth? I don't think mesh details requires too much in comparison to antialiasing, shaders, post processing and lighting. And what visual quirks do people say are related to ultra settings? As devSin said, check the programs and features for version 1.0.0.3 behind DA:I. It's downloaded automatically through Origin, no need to download the hotfix seperately. So put everything to ultra, or whatever you want, and it's good to go.

And what quirks would those be? I'm legitimately not sure what you're expecting to see.

Shader quality doesn't seem to have too huge an impact on higher-end systems, so there probably wouldn't be much difference from when it was locked to low (turning mesh quality down will make a difference, however, so you'd have to use the old command line workaround to manually force the shader quality to low if you wanted to test).

If you got that 980, unless you're playing with full MSAA, I doubt you'd run into many performance issues. Maybe you could stutter if you were using fade-touched textures at that resolution (I'm not sure how much room is left with 4GB at 2560x), but I honestly wouldn't worry about the game playing smoothly.

If you had the mesh issue then hair would by overly shiny and/or your character would look 90 years old.

Another indicator is that you cannot see scars with a low mesh setting. So if you are seeing scars then you are good.

I have a GTX 970. I turn post-process quality to low (who needs motion blur and depth of field?), shadows to high, and MSAA is turned off. All other settings are ultra or higher.

I get a minimum of 50 FPS in all situations. On average it is 70 FPS though.

Didn't the new nVidia drivers improve the 980 performance quite a lot?

You might be underestimating how powerful your machine is.

Thanks for the responses everyone! I'm away for Christmas but when I get back home I'll double check (and post a few screenshots).

My scars show up fine. My concern just came up since I got DAI as a Christmas present for someone on PS4. I've seen it played over the weekend and the models just look like they had better textures than I recalled with my version.

Take note that the fix for the locked-to-low setting is a HOTFIX.

A hotfix means it is applied each time you start the game WHILE CONNECTED to the internet via Origin. If you play offline, it will not be applied and the bug will still apply.

That might explain it. This all started when I kept origin offline and then at some point decided to allow it to update itself and noticed what - to me - looked like a big graphics upgrade.

That is false.

Obviously, you need to have Origin online at least once to update the game to the latest version, but once it's updated you can play offline as you choose. This is not a remote fix.

The only time you would notice a "big graphics upgrade" is if you had been playing with Patch 2 for some length of time. Then the game would have looked terrible, and you would instantly see the difference when finally updating.
