Re: Mordin seemingly to randomly die...

One of the devs stated that for the people who are left to hold the line right before the final boss, the make up of this group influences whether or not teammates die. Basically, any character who isn't very good at bunkering down has a chance of dying depending on who else is left behind, even if everyone is loyal. I think one of the examples the dev gave was something like: assume the group left behind doesn't have Grunt, Zaeed, or Jacob...then Mordin will die.

Is it required to let Legion send data to Geth to get his loyalty? I was doing his loyalty mission, saved the heretics, i can change his colours, though he isnt highlighted as loyal...

'Wat do?'

I'm fairly certain that whom you pick for each role and what upgrades you have provides a time-limit to complete Shepherd's part of the quest. For example, if you pick Tali/Legion for vents, you get more time than if you pick Thane et al. The choose itself does not determine whether the character in the vents lives or dies, only the time that you have to open the gates and keep them alive.

So, who survives the final mission depends not only on whom you pick for the roles but also upon how quickly you perform. What character class you play and how you play becomes important. If you are a vanguard, charging about and clearing rooms quickly, you are more likely to keep everyone alive. If you plod through as a sentinal, you are less likely to keep everyone alive. Finally, the difficulty setting upon which you play may be the most important variable in determining if you keep everyone alive. It simply takes longer to move Shepherd's team through the missions on insanity than it does on normal.

Finished my first playthrough at level 27 with all loyalty quests done, all the ship & armour upgrades, a bunch of weapon upgrades (but not all).

On the first run jacob & zaed died. Restarted the level with:

Infiltration Specialist: Legion

First Team Leader: Garrus

Biotic Specialist: Samara

Second Team Leader: Garrus

Escort Specialist: Mordin

Team used during the level: Tali & Grunt.

I don't think that time has anything to do with it at all (apart from the obvious time limit to hit each vent button). It's a combination of loyalty & suitability. Some people are simply unsuitable for the role, even if loyal, & consequently they will die. Choice of Fireteam leader also affects the survival of the tech specialist in the vent.

Use anyone other than a loyal Tali or a loyal Legion as the tech specialist in the vents = they die

Use an unloyal Legion or Tali in the vents = they die (regardless of Fireteam leader)

Use a loyal Legion/Tali in the vents + a suitable (Garrus/Miranda/Jacob) but unloyal Fireteam leader = Legion/Tali dies (even though loyal)

Use a loyal Legion/Tali in the vents + an unsuitable (not Garrus/Miranda/Jacob) Fireteam leader (loyal or not) = Legion/Tali dies (even though loyal)

Use a loyal Legion/Tali in the vent + a loyal & suitable Fireteam leader (Garrus/Miranda/Jacob) = Legion/Tali lives

Biotic shield: Loyal Samara/Morinth/Jack = your squad is fine. Unloyal Samara/Morinth/Jack  = one of your squad gets taken. Anyone else (e.g. Miranda), loyal or not = one of your squad gets taken.

Fireteam leader in the second part: Loyal Garrus/Miranda/Jacob = they live. Unloyal = they die at the door. Anyone else = they die at the door.
