I'm taking a break. I can't do anymore maps. I just can't. They feel lifeless and disconnected from the story. I'm a completionist at heart, and I honestly believe this game would be more enjoyable if I just stuck to the story. I've invested way too many hours and only about 20% (the story missions) I've thoroughly enjoyed.
For the person who asked "Why are you doing it if you don't enjoy it?" Because I love Dragon Age. I love the lore. I love the characters. I WANT so badly to love this game. But..it's all a mixed bag.
I've enjoyed the story, so I will finish it. But I honestly don't think I can do another playthrough. There's just not any variables or meaningful choices in these maps. The sidequests are so dry and generally feel like I'm grinding just to say I completed it. And that's a bummer.
I keep having this hope, in the weird video game age we live in, that there will be a DLCs that will be pure story and the love will reignite. But my fear is that they're just going to release another map with codex forced "stories" and bland NPCs. But I will keep wishing to the DLC gods that maybe this won't be the case...
After a month, I've decided to quit...

I personally love this game and think it is really well thought out for the most part minus how your char starts off. I don't mind the side quests, the change to mages, lack of stat allocation like I thought I would, 8 ability limit like I thought I would and the open world.
I like the huge environments, passives, specializations, customizing armor & weapons, and how every Ability tree looks different and is really diverse and most abilities are viable, and being the leader of a huge organization thought to bring back order to a chaotic region of the world.
I'm having a blast playing this game and will play through it many times.

After 50 hours of play I'll admit that I see the OP's point.
Sometimes I watch all those markers on the world map, all those areas I still have to explore and I wish they weren't there, that the game was smaller. Sidequests are boring and combat (while still enjoyable) is worse than both those in DA2 and Origins. I feel forced to see everything this game has to offer in order to get my money's worth, but sometimes it feels just like a meaningless grind.
I'll probably finish the game, but while I played through Origins 4 times and through DA2 3 times, this one will be the only playthrough that DAI will get. I'm sorry, because I see the effort that Bioware developers put into this game, and I think this is a solid foundation for chapters to come, but in the current state playing through this game with a completionist attitude is a pain. Someone could say: "Sprint to the end then, if you don't like exploration and grind", but I would answer: "If you need to sprint through the game because you don't enjoy it then that game has failed".

"50 hours"? Wimp! I'm over 180 hours into my first playthrough and I started feeling like OP before the 20-hour mark.
I love the DA World. I so wanted to love DAI. I'll finish, eventually. And I'll probably try at least one more character (maybe a Qunari...)
But the terrible PC UI that makes doing almost everything a struggle when it was silk, pure silk, in the previous games, is really wearing me down. And the number of times I've walked in very, very, large circles because I wanted to reach Point A, only to discover that it is IMPOSSIBLE (lookin' at you, Exalted Plains) makes me weep.
And the inventory/crafting/merchant system that has me cycling through basically everything I own, for all characters, multiple times, at multiple stations, is an abomination that a twelve-year-old would have been embarrassed to code.
And the worst part? NONE OF THIS WAS NECESSARY. It was all working in DAO. We laugh/mock about games being a "console port". Maybe yes, maybe no. But Why-oh-Why, for the love of the Maker, couldn't we, just once, get a PC-to-PC port?
You know, take what's already working and, ummm... Just use it!

The PC UI had to be remade because the DA:O scripting probably wouldn't have worked for FB3. You'll notice DA:O and DA2 didn't have nested levels (an area where you had a walkway under another walkable path) or a real z-axis. All the pathfinding and camera issues seem to really derive from the inability of the engine to handle elevation. I'd wager this is also why there is an issue with the tethered tactical camera.

Still on my first character and first play through. I'm only around 70 hours in, and finding that days will pass before I feel inclined to fire up DA:I and put in another hour or two. My last play session in fact was 5 days after the previous, which is unheard of for a DA game. I literally couldn't wait to get back from work to continue with DA:O play throughs and see what was next.
DA:O I played through once for each origin story, pretty much back-to-back without playing any other games inbetween. DA2 I played through twice, with a month or so between the two.
With DA:I I really can't be bothered - it has just not grabbed me and kept me interested. I really, really want to like this and see the whole story but at the moment it is something of a chore to continue. I'm resisting buying Divinity Original Sin because, from what I've read, it will be closer to the experience I was expecting (without the DA setting) and if I start playing that I fear I'll never complete DA:I.
I mourn the design decisions that took us from DA:O to DA:I.

It's kinda like being in a bad marriage where you don't really like your partner anymore, but you still love them just because you've been together for so long.
I really don't like Dragon Age Inquisition, but I've been in love with this series for so long, so I'm sticking around -- for better or for worse...

Funny considering i can Solo a high dragon on my mage in nightmare mode, the reason why you hate the combat is why i love it , every party member has a role, tank , damager dealers , party buffer etc... but people are different therefore not all of us are going to enjoy the same thing , my advice OP is take a break, a couple of days , see if that helps , if not then perhaps the game just isnt for you so you might need to move on to something as there is no sense in torturing yourself.

(to Salaya) You do realise you spoiled something potentially big for many on the NO SPOILERS scuttlebutt?
If you had to make this thread here instead of on the Spoiler scuttlebutt, at the very least you could have labeled it or avoided mentioning names.
And no, not everyone watches the trailers of the game because of that exact reason so not all saw that reveal.

(To Darkly Tranquil) That Hawke appears.
I have no issues with Salaya's opinion but I do with the fact that posting it on this section and mentioing that name was entirely unnecessary.

Where in the previous games (or at least DAO), the player got to choose the focus for their mage. It's fine for Bioware to implement a new vision, but not at all surprising that this vision is unfun for many who prefer to play mages. I remember David Gaider explaining to a forum poster a couple years ago that it didn't matter what kind of game the poster wanted to play. What mattered was what kind of game Bioware wanted to make. Personally, I think this attitude is the source of a lot of Bioware's problems. They get too enamored of "bright" ideas without thinking through whether they will result in a fun experience for the player. Hint: if mages are going to be resource-starved and squishy, their players are going to expect a proportional payoff. Second hint: being able to utilize a very limited number of abilities and limiting the use of those abilities via very limited mana + cooldowns + resistances is not the basis for a fun system, particularly when weapon-damage is significantly subpar.
100% spot on explaining Bioware as developers.
They get an idea in their heads and run with it no matter how dumb and UTTERLY boring game play wise it is. They always look at themselves as "we know best". Sure I am not a game developer but I know what is FUN. Attrition based combat with damage soaking enemies are NOT fun, never have been for anyone.
Removing healing and limiting potions and forcing you to take trips to camps and INTERRUPT your "gaming session/progress" is another idiotic move.
We've been telling them for years what WORKED and didn't work in DAO and DA2. They never listen.
I am really getting tired of their same formula for every single game they make too. It feels like I am playing ME2/3 but in a high fantasy DA game instead. I am talking about plot and the 'gather forces schtick".

(to KaiserShep) I edited that in my first comment.
Not everyone watches the trailers for exactly that reason - I know someone who did the best they could to not watch or see any of the promotional material including trailers. Heck, she didn't even want to see who the companions were because she wanted to go into the game knowing as little about it as she could.

Man do I know that feeling. I just have a super hard time trying to get myself to start the game. I just have this nagging feeling of trudgery, running around in an empty, but pretty world. I guess I really just should ignore everything but the main quest. But I am the type of player that need to see all the corners and crevices on a map, the hope of something cool and new. That never happens in DAI. The enemies and combat is not fun either, it's so formulaic and static and the Attrition, sigh.
DA2 had the issue of reused environments, but you could overcome that with the fun combat. It made it feel fun.
I fear this is what DA will become from now on, boring. They get GOTY all over the place and yet when you actually play it you realize that, it isn't all that great.
I love to play games that just makes me want to play more, can't wait to get home or go to bed and not even sleep full 8 hours because i just want to play. Play so hard eyes dry out and you realize, crap I haven't eaten in hours. THAT is fun.
This game is nowhere near that and I was so hyped for this game. I thought they simply cannot do anything wrong. They had the total blueprint on what to fix between DAO and DA2. Just combine the best part. But Bioware being Bioware, they went a third road and decided to make it boring instead.

Must (sadly) agree that this is the worst DA of the three games. It has gone in completely wrong direction.
I really loved DA 1 and DA 2. They where great games!
This is a lost identity and a poor mix between a MMO and Skyrim/OpenworldRPG...
Open world is ofcourse a tempting idea... but normaly it just wont cut it... it always looses the track on the mainquest and you loose the identity in the world...
The game is way to mainstream for me and it just have to many flaws.
I mean, you see a rift of demons ahead and preparing for the combat...oh wait i have two herbs here...
Please Bioware, in the future, remove all gathering! It is in the MMO part (and acctually it isnt fun there either), i dont want a homework.
Remove 75% of all the sidequests and focus on doing the mainquests and maybe more intresting sidequests and follower quests.
Also...no point in finding followers, since you can spec them how you would like. That is certanly the worst design decision of many in this game.
Obviously Iron Bull (just for an example) should be spec in 2-handed, etc.
I can make the list enourmous, but will not spend more time in this and move onwards to doing something more rewarding!

I'll agree with most of this.
Except if they remove 75% of the side quests and exploration the forums would be aflame with how "linear" it is.
Most if not all the people(I'm not speaking for everyone btw, just what I've noticed on these forums) myself included were unhappy with the game received not being the game that was shown at E3 and various other Gaming Conventions.
Yes you can argue "Well that was an Alpha build, things can change blah blah blah". But to me what they showed was a completely different take on the game we recieved.
