Part of me was afraid when I started the game that it would be too american in the typical in-your-face religious talk kind of way. No offence but as a european I've often rolled my eyes at how all US media is way too much about God this, God that and Jesus this, Jesus that. It's just highfalutin platitudes to me, and I'm not even atheist. I can't really decide if DA:I overdid this or not though. I think sometimes it did have a bit of an american-centric viewpoint on how the various characters perceived god, but again, I think it makes sense because this is like mediveal times of the Dragon Age universe.

Can I ask WTF channels are you getting in europe to give you that is 'all' the stuff on "American" TV?? I mean seriously, the only channels that have all that kind of stuff are the hardcore religous channels. And if you are watching those and thinking "This must be all America thinks about" then you are very sadly mistaken. Look up the lineup for NBC, ABC, and look at all the shows there. You will see alot of stuff isn't the whole religious stuff.

So I'm sorry to say my friend that your whole picture of American culture and what we watch on TV to be skewed by your cable/TV/satalite company.

I feel they did a very good with the Chantry being a mirror in many ways to the Catholic Church. I have to applaud Bioware for tackling such a divisive modern issue head on with many religious arguments I've seen in RL being represented well in the game. In fact I was wondering if they would dare tackle since it would generate a lot of controversy, but if they didn't calling this game: Dragon Age: Inquisition wouldn't have worked.

For better or worse your Inquisitor is at the head of a religious organization with a large of fanatics loyal to you and you alone. It's rather interesting how even if you don't believe you are the Maker's chosen you are still treated as such by your followers.

Both inspired and a little disturbed by it's examination of faith actually. Disturbed because some important characters are in danger of believing almost anything.

And I feel like it's in my or any player's power to harm people, dupe them, or use their beliefs against them. When I think of all the possible combinations that you could play and yet people STILL think you're Andraste's herald, it depresses me.

I feel like I have to get people back on track somehow.. To find something truly worth believing in. But what if I'm full of crap too?

I think that is were things get...iffy.  And more philosophical than factual perhaps.  :D   Specifically, there is a difference between faith and belief.  And again between faith and religion. And again between faith and or religion and the specific actions, beliefs and rules accorded due to the above.

What if you are full of crap?  What if NONE of it is accurate, at all?  Will that change a persons actions?  Should it?  What if no-one is full of crap? What if every religion at its core held its own kaleidoscopic view of the same eternal truth?    What would change?  Everything? nothing?

We become concerned usually when there is inner motivation for others believing as we do.  And usually, at some point in history, that concern started a seed in order to create order amongst the masses.  It was probably very effective to do so.    TV and media is used for the same purposes now actually.  It doesn't make it a "religion" but "back when" organized religion was probably the easiest method of reaching the people; today, it's the media.

Need a war?  God on your side will help motivate/protect etc.  Everyone wants to be "special" so deem yourselves the chosen of your particular god and grab a sword. It makes it more ok to fight for the powers that be.  Sometimes, loyalty to your flag, your country or people is the motivational force.  It harnesses that same energy though.

Does this fact take away the potential good side of faith?  I can see how, unless you are able to step very far back from the emotional center of the picture, that it would be very very easy.  For people who hold faith very dear to themselves, they think of it as their "compass", their "core" and their "center".  Thus, it would be easy for an action to feel like your very *core* is threatened when it is faced with differences/opposition.  Faith is a positive thing in many peoples lives. The issue is not with faith of any flavour itself but with attachment:  anything that causes us great emotional attachment is power and weakness in one, power that can be utilized and twisted and exploited. That is an issue of power and emotional attachment, not necessarily faith itself.  :)

The truly dark use this as the main motivation to boost their own political power plays, because it can be just SO effective.   But it's a powder keg.   Best to have someone else carry it.  :D

The games depiction *so far* is a bit of a caricature, but at least it is interesting.  My fem hum inq just tried to create order, giving no-one too much power.  Naturally, it didn't go well.  LOL  I havent tried to play it as a person with absolutely NO faith yet (but will, maybe next playthough) so not sure how well the game allows it.  It doesn't do "Check my dalish gods" very well.  Maybe just bugs though.

I get the impression that this was the swan song of the chantry battles in DA though.  It feels almost all played out now.

I wonder why the idea of believing in yourself is so foreign in games like this. It's like a fetish for some of these savages to remain helpless and weak; always at the mercy of others. And the ones who are able to get **** done are full of doubt and fear. It's pathetic.

First, Bioware is Canadian. Second, there are more channels than Faux News.

That aside, I liked how they kept things ambiguous at times, but I still had absolutely no idea what exactly my Inquisitor believed in as a Dalish so I went the atheistic route. I'm currently playing a Qunari who is a theist somewhat, but not Andrastian. Anything but Andrastian.

Also,

Spoiler

So as far as not beating you in the head with a rubber chicken, they give us some wiggle room to decide for ourselves, but in some cases, I think they leave what we're supposed to choose from sorely underdeveloped in some cases.
