I was trying to do a puzzle where you had to have your companions in different places in a room. I put them on hold and switched through the characters to position them and someone would always seemingly randomly lose the hold command and run up to the controlled char. I solved it by spamming the hold button but that's just bogus.
Maybe it's bugged, or something else, but in past games you could have the team on hold, tell them to attack something they had no LOS to and switch through charas and nothing would break the hold command.
I want that back.
I'm curious though. Since you never had trouble, on which platform do you play? I'm on PC. Is this another platform-specific problem?

I play on PC. Did you watch the videos?

Im kind of surprised they cant do basic things but they can effortlessly evade the delayed aoe fire attacks from highland ravager with ease.

I'm assuming everyone knows that in PC you can issue individual Hold Position by double clicking the ground, and a temporal "Defend" by double clicking on an ally.

So far, the best behaviour I could come up with is something similar to what someone else stated before:

Tank -> Defend himself

DPS -> Follow tank

Inquisitor-> AI off

I usally hold position with the tank and taunt everything, ranged dps will follow and end up with a solid focus. As long as you don't real time control the tank, the hold position will never override.

I play as Knight Enchanter in a roguish style: attacking from behind, fade stepping into ranged enemies. With this strategy sometimes my party surprises me by killing a strong enemy without my help.

Now I wonder if I set Solas to Defend the tank he will stop  shielding me when I don't need it and the tank is dying. Most of the time I have to shield the party but if I played a rogue or something it'd suck.

With tank defend self I've often found the tank will stop attacking if he loses aggro which is why I have it set to follow self instead.

I'm not fond of defend tactics in general though.

Why do my mages fight 6 inches away from the person they are attacking? Driving me nuts right now ...

I can handle the difficulty, but the AI is making it more difficult in a broken sort of way.

Hold is beyond broken. Anyone defending it is spreading propaganda.

Yeah, propaganda.

And it's their loss. While they all whine like children about their spastic ai I make use of the hold command just fine. You can only lead a horse to water I suppose

There are plenty of people who come to the strategy section to learn, not complain.

Eyes lie.

I take my main, select HOLD ALL

switch to next character select HOLD ALL, move him, select HOLD ALL

switch to third toon, select HOLD ALL, move him, select HOLD ALL

I do this again with the fourth character.

Then, I move my main, look behind me and see all my characters are holding their position, engage in fight and when I turn around my characters teleport RIGHT BEHIND ME.

We were lied to, plain and simple. All the game jornos were saying, "DA3 returns to its glory! There's a tactical cam ... blah blah blah!"

They lied.

tactics are clunky. They were thrown in to attract players like me, who skipped out on DA:2, but beat DA:O four times on nightmare.

Also, does your video explain why my mages think it is a good idea to stand next to my DW rogue?

sigh.

I have.
I belive you that LOS might not be an issue, but it's strange and very different to the last games. Nothing would break hold. Now you have to be very careful what you do in which order and reapply hold if needed. It's a pain.

And the two instances where I was really frustraded with breaking hold commands were both out of combat.
In my opinion, it was better in the old games. Period.

I haven't had an issue with hold. That seems to work. The problem is it often works too well. I tell Solas to hold at point X which is "ranged" distance from the dragon. The dragon does that hop move and now Solas is within claw range. You can move a good distance because there is frankly that one horrible puzzle that requires you to hold people on and in various places and that wouldn't solvable if hold didn't work.

I take it you didn't see how far away I was from my ranged characters in the videos did you? And how they didn't teleport their me? They'll eventually teleport to you sure but there's no reason to have them be far enough away from them that they do.

As for why mages want to stand by rogues and tanks? I don't know the answer to that but I do know how to stop them from doing it and I've illustrated as much.

But yes tactics section needed 2 more settings. One for behavious IE Aggressive, passive etc and one for ranged or melee

Tactics section needs to be just like the previous games.

Yea not a fan of this "tactics" we have now. It is extremely dumbed-down, to the point that it's barely different from having pure AI companions. Intense play-and-pause is basically the only option if I want my party to behave in an even remotely efficient manner. Fortunately that is the playstyle I prefer anyways, but the game as hyped up as being playable in real time. It is, just much less so than the first two games. Can't understand why they wanted to take such a huge step down in this area, it is my one real and serious complaint about this game so far.

Why won't they obey orders? I'm playing on Nightmare and no matter how many times I order him to a certain spot Solas turns around as soon as he gets there, runs back to where he was and fires spells at demons from six inches away. And dies. And Varric is just as bad.

So I order them to Hold Position. I run 10 meters down the road, turn around and they've started following me. Why give me the option to issue orders if they won't follow them? I can't even micro-manage because as soon as I switch to another companion the one I was just using goes back to doing the same stupid sh*t that was getting them killed in the first place.

This is not f*cking rocket science. A mage and an archer should not start every fight by running into melee range.

Yeah, its dumb. They got rid of tactics completely, replaced them with "Use, Really use, Don't Use"... Awful, awful AWFUL decision.

The General consensus is to completely disable companion AI, micro everything. There is no other way you'll succeed on nightmare.

I hope that people noticed that most of the gameplay videos made by Bioware do not use tactics commands and show mostly console/a-rpg gameplay. Also you can't blame costumers on this part when Bioware showed PC users this video to reassure them.

believe me OP. I ask this during every mid difficult fight.

"Varric...why are you walking UP to a melee enemy as an archer? Varric? Varric please. Varric staph. You didn't do this in DA2 Varric."

Ah yes. Varric's combat "AI"...

I like Varric as a character so I really like to bring him with me at all times. But damn is he stupid.... Why oh why does he always have to walk up and place himself 3ft away and right in front of the dragons/giants/raging demons or whatever?

USE YOUR RANGED WEAPON FROM RANGE YOU STUPID DORF! Geez!

The tactics/AI worked just fine in previous games. Why did you try to fix something that obviously wasn't broken Bioware? Why?
