Well, first off the bat I have been playing the game, and then watching reviews and lets plays and stuff. Not trying to 'spoil' myself, but I did not know when I was going to get a chance to play the game...well, I have been getting a chance to play the game and...
Holy crap I am loving it. Well, now that I have done In Hushed Whispers/ In Your Heart Shall Burn. Man I was enjoying the game to that point, but those two quests really did blow the roof off. In Your Heart Shall Burn is not only a triumph of video game missioning, questing, and gameplay, but of writing. And the theory of. It was a fantastic exposition of joy, hope, despair, and then triumph. If BioWare ...or any developer...can sustain that entire mood over an entire game then that should be an instant classic. Which Inquisition is, but so far it is also missing the boat on a few things and from the bits I have seen I worry that they can sustain it throughout the entire game. Though it looks excellent.
The role playing- it is odd that a lot of people here I have seen are complaining, or asking, or worrying about the Inquisitor's loss of personality. And at first...I agreed. I rather enjoyed the amount of 'emotional dialog' choices in DA 2. I loved being...sometimes innparopriately...sarcastic to anyone and having a devil may care Hawke who would laugh in the face of a Fade Demon...while she was also being eaten by said Demon. But, enough of that. I initially agreed, and was afraid that the 'choice based' dialog would leave the Inquisitor feeling like a drone. Not the case, even in this new system there are still sarcastic options...maybe not so much over the top though as the Sarcasm in DA 2 or even in the 'emotional' wheel in DA I, but there is enough there. You can still poke fun at Cole, joke around with Cassandra, and shape your character. In so much that I am really starting to enjoy the character and get into him, perhaps more so then I have over any other Male Protagonist I haave ever created. He is sarcastic when he needs to be, diplomatic when he has to be, and just that occasional dash of aggressive brashness. Plus, as an added bonus, despite all the hours that I spent...unfortantly...crafting the head canon for the Inquisitors I intend to play, at least so far in this play through the dialog options are allowing me to express that character perhaps 98% of the time. The only annoyance was that most of my companions I could not tell them that, don't worry, if they behave I will set the Mages free after this whole business is concluded. I could only say that to Viv, and perhaps though this created a desperate character moment...he wanted tor eassure everyone, perhaps even himself that he was doing the right thing, but fears it will be taken from him. Also, while I hated his beard at first...I have decided he looks enough like Obi-Wan that I am living that particular dream...
The combat- is actually really fun and really engaging. Now that I have gotten good advice on it, I am able to manipulate my companions to my hearts content. And hunting is not a pain in this game like it was in Skyrim. I still may have a few issues that are unformed in my head and may have to pay attention to it but for now, the only complaint really is the lack of versatility in the tac cam.
The companions- while this is a BioWare game and I could just go on and leave it at that,I am enjoying the cast. Loving them. I will need to actually play more. But its starting to feel like a family, and I do love the adorkableness between my Inquisitor, and Cassandra...probably exactly like how a mage stuck in the circle would react around his first crush.
The side quests- So far my only real and genuine and heart felt complaint is the Side Quests. A. There are way too many of them, and way too many of them which are the same. You have to collect 10 shards, at least, in the Forbidden Oasis, find as many as (5) love letters in the Hinterlands and give them to their long lost loves, 29 bottles of bear throughout the game, and at least 75 fade rifts...really? I can't help but feel that if they reduced these numbers, not gotten rid of but reduced, then maybe they could have squeezed more story content out of the game or made the game more managable and flows better...yes I understand you do not have to do them, and I won't do them all notbeing a completionist...but it is annoying. And B. They feel like Skyrim in one bad way, the fact that sometimes you just happen tos tumble around a quest that you just have to do, either for Role play or annoyance reasons, and go back. I was off doing a quest...then ran into Druffy the Druffallo, and had to spend ten minutes sheparding him back home, not cool. Literally turned the corner and there he was.
But, the game is gorgeous. I will give them that, the music is fantastic, the stories are really starting to shape up, and I have a feeling...shortness of the main quest or not...that my experience and love of these characters is only just beginning.
Pros:
- Good combat.
- Good dialog.
- Great comapnion characters.
- Good experienced to role play.
- Exploration is fun, though it could use a little work.
- And the game is beautiful in every sense of the word, graphically, storywise, and with the characters
Cons:
- Bugs, crashes. etc.
- Wonky tactical cam.
- Oddly repetitive side quests. Sure Origins was bad but Maker's breath.
