Just for fun, anyone feel like translating some the Five Thousand (+) Sutras into Alliance English?

Because they tend to be quite short, a sutra could be something you have made up off the top of your head, modified from real life texts or blatantly stolen from other IP's like my first example below. I'm thinking elements of samurai philosophy mixed in with Buddhist verses for that warrior-philosopher spirit would hit the nail on the head.

Here's a couple examples of what I have in mind:

"To be brave in battle proves nothing. Bravery itself proves nothing. A Justicar should be prepared to put aside fear, regret and uncertainty and either fight or die in the attempt."

"Only one who devotes himself to a cause with his whole body and soul can be a true master.  For this reason, mastery demands all of a person."

Any takers?

By combat blade, boltgun, and grenade shall the Space Marine assail his..." oops wrong franchise.

Not sure if this is more what you're looking for, but one of my favorites that I've tried to live by is from Tien T'ai.

"Given enough time, any man may master the physical.

Given enough knowledge, any man may become wise.

It is the true warrior who can master both...

And surpass the result."

Perfect :D I guess one thing the Asari aren't short on is time. Pre- Reaper war, of course.

I get that these re more saying or proverbs than sutras but, with a little rewording, they become something which i imagine may have been written and read by millennia of Justicar adherents.

I remember a conversation with Samara in which she told me about the time her and Nihilus fought briefly in a jungle. In the end he put bystanders in danger to save himself. Samara said that the code prompted her to save the people in danger over perusing a target. I am assuming that somewhere amongst the scripture it states how innocent people are more important than renegades.

Thank you Larry :) It's interesting how these sorts of things could be interpreted into the Mass Effect series' Paragon and Renegade options. For instance, in the original game on Eden Prime, Shepard comes into contact with a group of colonists who have been involved in a smuggling ring.

The Justicar entry on the wiki says:

...a justicar will defend a village of just farmers to her dying breath if they are being attacked by bandits, but she will kill every person in that village if they are found to be running a smuggling cartel.

So when Samara was fighting Nihilus, if those bystanders she chose to save were the Eden Prime settlers would the result have been different?

You are welcome. I believe she would end up attacking them. Play out the scenario...

Cole: Help! We're under attack!

Samara: Remain calm. I will deal with this.

....

Cole: Thank you. I was afraid they would find the stash.

Samara: What?

Cole: We smuggle weapons and grenades from the military for money.

(12 seconds later)

Cole: Ahhhhhh!!!

Ha! :D I agree, she wouldn't stand for that, they would be "unjust" and death would soon follow.

Ok, here's another scenario. What does the code say about enemies as potential helpers? On Korlus during ME2's Dossier the Warlord mission, Shepard comes across a wounded merc. Now, I'm assuming a Justicar would value intel as much as anyone so I'm going out on a limb to suppose in a similar situation the Code doesn't necessarily demand the death of an enemy on sight. Maybe there is a stipulation that any and all threats must be dealt with maximum force but as he's wounded, the merc is no threat.

So what happens next? Shep has the option to charm the merc into misleading the enemy troops, sending them back to base or simply telling the merc not to answer the radio, the gun in the face a non-verbal warning of the consequences. This is where it gets even more fun because picking that option has the merc answer the radio anyway which prompts the option to use the renegade interrupt to kill the merc for his actions.

Which of those options would the Justicar pick and why?

Enemies as helpers? Well, remember at the Illium docks when you bump into Samara for the first time, she was fighting some asari gang member. Samara was implying she would let the girl live if she gave up the information. I am not certain, but if I had to guess, one of the lines of the code must state that people can live if they help stop a greater evil. Why else would you give your target a choice?

About the mercenary, Samara would probably go paragon.

What if she doesn't have enough Paragon points, or simply isn't as charming or intimidating as Shepard? This leaves her two choices: Allow the merc to get away with that act, or shoot him before he can finish making the call?

Was he ever a wanted criminal though? I find it interesting that the asari have a culture which allows the few Justicars they have to do whatever their code demands. In this case, Samara witnessed him kill an unarmed civilian, which according to her code means she must exact justice. We don't know the details about why Nihilus did what he did, only that Samara had to pursue him. As she herself admits, learning the details about why aren't always healthy for her psyche.

What do you call a police asari rolling in a car? A Justicar.

"What is louder than Thunder, yet cannot be heard

What is heavier than Gold, yet weighs no scale"

"Honour!"

The 42nd Aphorism of the Code.

"Know thy self and you will conquer all things"

"Even the greatest Warrior sometimes yearns for his/her own battlements"

And last that old maxim that has served the Asari well down their long history. -

Some of the the stuff from the Book of Five Rings, with a few tweaks could easily pass for parts of the Justicar code.
