So yeah I was thinking of playing a dw rogue, either elf or qunari, and having Varric, Solas and either Iron Bull or Blackwall backing me up.

Thoughts?

Iron Bull's a hoot to have in your team for the conversation, but he's a great deal more fragile than Blackwall unless you control him all the time.  Blackwall, on the other hand, simply refuses to die, and you never really need to control him.

Varric seems to think Bianca's a dagger--he refuses to stay out of melee range (at least with me)!  Still, if you spec Bianca properly, he gets massive criticals.

There are many points in the game where having Solas with you gives you extra exposition--it's almost like the devs wanted him to be a canon character.  His Rift Mage specialty is very good for AoE and CC, but not much for single-target damage.

For tanking cass as S&S is better. Since S&S warriors will not die any ways, templar a better support spec for the part. Mage i will say Solas as he has a LOT less mana issues. Finally for Varric disable his traps in the tactics and make him follow himself. If you let the AI use the traps it will get into melee and stay there. SO avoid the traps skills and if you have to take it to progress down the tree, do remember to disable them on the tactics. Finally never make a ranged character follow a melee char as that will always kill them.

Thanks! Think I'll Go with Blackwall, Varric and Solas with a archer with the assassin specialization and buff the team towards critical damage. Wish me luck!

Given you're a dagger rogue...

Tank/Blackwall. He's nigh on immortal and has furious eyebrows. The man is a damage sponge. Use him as such.

Mage/Solas. Vivienne might die less, but she'll also cast fewer spells. Use 'ol shiny head for AOE attacks and Barrier.

Ranged/Sera. Against regular enemies, she's good. Against boss monsters - especially dragons - she's amazing.

Just make sure you have your mage and archer follow themselves. Less likely to get into melee range that way.

Blackwall and Vivienne are a must for me. They really do not die.

Have to admit, Blackwall and Solas were absolutely brilliant on my DW Nightmare run.  Blackwall basically took no damage and Solas kept everyone under control.  I kept the fourth spot open for whoever else I wanted to take, but Blackwall and Solas were always in my party and nightmare easy.

Solas is the best party mage by far if you aren't a Rift Mage yourself. In which case Dorian becomes the best one for Walking Bomb that tied with PoTA can practically finish usual fights in seconds (PoTA + WB from Dorian + Barrage on the infected target and it is explosions galore; if you want to go overkill then put even a Static Cage on top and even a bunch of strong enemies get killed in seconds).

If only the Necro spec had comparable mana regen to a Rift Mage then it would be a wonderful spec. As it is you have not enough mana to even employ WB fully most of the times.

The games gives you the best team right from the start.

My cheese party:

Me (either DD or Archer rogue, both work)

Cass / Blackwall (I use Cass, both are fine)

Viv (KE, can't die, takes down Barriers and Guards with ease)

4th random companion who usually just dies if I even take him/her with me

The hardest fights are with multiple mobs, especially if they got the rogue stealth mob.

Dragons die in on Thousand Cuts ulti... or if you're feeling especially cheesy, just FF and do a double Thousand Cuts.

I basically face-tank and right click through everything.

Tactics and strategy wise, game's really not as deep as DA:O or Divinity:OS , BG, etc.

Blackwall as tank if you don't want to babysit your tank the whole game; Cass for dominating demons and party buff and last but not least Solas as a mage because at some point Pull of Abyss is what you want for your DW rogue.

As a tip use PoA, once everyone is clustered use Death Blow on the weakest enemy, second hit from Death Blow does the same bonus damage it does to the initial target againts all other enemies(even if they have full hp) in its AoE since you can keep spamming Death Blow it means the moment an enemy caught by PoA it died but hadn't know it yet. First red lyrium giant in Empire de lion had few mobs with him for example which worked againts him since he lost the half health in few seconds with every Red Templar is dead because of this combo.

Cassandra can boost the party damage by %50 (horn of valor, blessed Blades) or even up to %80 againts demons, so she is very valuable for a DW rogue. She has dispel so between her and Solas you can dispel whole demon waves before they even appear.

Probably the best "all-around" party (tank, mage, and damage dealer) is:

Blackwall-Simply more hands off than Cassandra, especially in early post-Skyhold when you have his champion spec but not OP tier 3 armor (yet)

Solas-Rift mage is really strong and the AI can use it properly (unlike KE)

Sera/Varric-Not sure which I'd consider better. Varric gets stronger the later the game goes (with crit chance+opportunity knocks) but Sera is "lower maintenance", don't need to craft party gear for crit, or constantly buy Bianca upgrades from Bonny Sims, as you'll be getting decent bows from enemies when they die. Also flask of lightning on a non-player-controlled character is pretty OP, especially if you combo with say, upgraded static cage (this I would call cheesing the game).

As for why the others aren't ideal:

Dorian-Necromancer isn't as good as rift mage, and isn't as easy for AI to use

Vivienne-AI can't use KE well

Cassandra-Slightly weaker at tanking post-Skyhold but pre-tier 3 armor

Iron Bull-AI can't do 2H warrior well, and even with S&S Reaver isn't as good at tanking as Champion, also some armors are class restricted (dwarf, elf, human only armors T_T)

Cole-AI can't do DW Rogue, and AI can't MoD or HB on correct target, which makes archer Cole not that good either

Sera is much better/stronger as Varric/Bianca, especially in later game. But you need tier 3 bow-schematics (like "swan bow"), and tier 3 and/or tier 4 (dragon bone) materials. Varric/Biance has not any a chance.

Seras specialization: Tempest -> completely overpowered: flask of fire (with upgrade) + thousand cuts. You/Sera can kill a high-dragon on nightmare solo within seconds - yeah, this game had some "balance problems" ^^

so, varric.. lol (and he is just a boring companion - realy, what happend with the "DA2-Varric"?)

i have heard that dw rogue on nightmare is not the easiest. when do a nightmare run, ill be using the following team -

blackwall - tank

inquisitor (mage, spirit, frost, KE,) spamming barrier and swords

sera/varric - whoever ever has better overall output (ive heard its sera)

dorian - spirit/necro for support, fears, dots, rez ai zombies

this way u have two within melee range and inquisitor can drop barriers on himself and tank. dorian can drop barrier for the ranged people and support with fears.

That's a bug however.

If a player wants to exploit bugs there are many things they can do to trivialize the game..or just set it to casual.

Either way using a completely OP exploit will make the game far too easy so why even bother setting the diffiuclty to NM,

If your playing on nightmare for the challange or fun I wouldn't recommend a KE. It kind of ruins the point of playing on nightmare.

Any team works on Nightmare, tbh, especially post Skyhold.

Avoid IB and Cole unless you're gonna respec Cole as an archer and spend a lot of time upfront messing around with Bull to get him to work. They're both viable, just harder and maybe best suited for when you get the hang of it all.

Dorian/Solas + Blackwall + Sera has been the easiest team for me, but I imagine it's partially their abilities and partially my familiarity with them.

I Don't know much about the ins and outs of combat, but I think our friend needs some help pre-Skyhold since I hear the last mission of heaven is the hardest part of the game. I know I had a ton of trouble trying to kill everything on that mission which I did not do and decided to go for mission completion fast as possible. @OP, If you're going DW rogue I recommend you find a strategy to not die and quick. A lot of enemies can 1 shot you if your biting off more than you can chew. Especially those freakin Terrors. Always have a char with dispel and always have a char who can tank. Other than that, with Barrier and Blackwall in your party, just try to survive as a DW rogue and the rest will work itself out.

Edit: BTW that is an awesome avatar.
