Aeonar's function as a prison is actually pretty ingenious, if one thinks about it... The way it's described in the codex, it sounds like all but a garaunteed death sentence to accused maleficarum(or those affected by blood magic), and a rather quick one at that.

It's not ingenious, because said "death sentence" just transforms them into even worse monsters.

And then they're killed by the Templars(or, more likely, Seekers if the implication of near 100% possession is accurate) stationed at the prison(because if they weren't, there'd be even more abominations running around Ferelden/Orlais)...  See?  Ingenious.

One does have to wonder, though, what a mage would have to do(or not do) to be sentenced to Aeonar rather than be killed outright or made Tranquil...

No, because it's an unnecessary risk given the volatile nature of abominations, not to mention it doesn't really prove or disprove innocence in the first place. It's another Adamant situation just waiting to happen.

I don't see that as a bad thing. From what I've heard about it, I think the Tevinter circle system is better. The problem comes from all the slavery and such.

Yeah, just those minor details.

It's a risk, but it's not unnecessary.  An unnecessary risk would be letting maleficarum, or those who assisted maleficarum, walk around freely without testing the veracity of the accusation.

Of course, if you're advocating execution for all suspected maleficarum and their accomplices, regardless of their circumstances or proximity, then you'd be right....  Aeonar is an unnecessary risk in that case.

It proves nothing, while potentially creating new threats. Mages can be possessed with or without blood magic, and placing them in an area where the veil is weak or damaged (such as Kirkwall) will only increase the chance of this across the board. A mage going abomination doesn't actually prove whether or not they were legitimately maleficar, but when they do it only creates a new, immediate problem to be dealt with. Sure, we can assume the Templars kill them when it happens, but consider their mortality rates across all the games in similar situations.

It's pointless, just a waste of resources and manpower.

I'll have to play it again. Damn you Dean. This sounds right though.

I take your damnations with a giddy pleasure.

If it makes you feel better, though, there's nothing against Vivienne's character in her sincerely trying to save him and exploiting the opportunity his death if she failed.

Of course. She's classy like that.
