How about activating abilities by pressing two buttons simultaneously?
for example, with Xbox One controller, using Y+B,X+A as triggers of abilities, so, Y+B, X+A, LT+Y+B, LT+X+A, we have four more ability slots.
I play as a mage, I really wish there are more ability slots.
